Book excerpt: Au cours des dernières décennies, la modélisation numérique des dispositifs électromagnétiques en présence de courants de Foucault a été l'objet d'un nombre important de développements reposant sur différentes formulations et méthodes numériques.La méthode des éléments de frontière ou méthode intégrale de frontière est une méthode numérique très compétitive puisque, par opposition aux approches volumiques, elle ne nécessite que la discrétisation de la frontière du domaine. Elle est toutefois limitée aux matériaux isotropes, homogènes et linéaires, ce qui est une limitation importante. Elle peut tout de même s'avérer être attractive pour certaines applications où une telle hypothèse peut être formulée.Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous allons nous concentrer sur la modélisation du problème courants de Foucault par la méthode des équations intégrales de frontière soumis à des excitations harmoniques. Ce rapport propose une synthèse sur ces formulations notamment avec une comparaison fine des formulations présentes dans la littérature. Plusieurs nouvelles formulations sont ensuite proposées et développées, dans l'objectif de comparer la méthode des équations intégrales de frontière à d'autres méthodes numériques (méthode couplée éléments finis / équations intégrales de frontières, méthode intégrale de volume avec une condition impédance de surface).

Book excerpt: Le contrôle non destructif (CND) par courants de Foucault (CF) est une technique largement utilisée dans le domaine industriel. La modélisation apporte une aide précieuse pour sa mise en œuvre. Différentes approches peuvent être envisagées pour le développement d’outils de simulation. Le modèle VIM (Volume Integral Method) est basé sur une résolution semi-analytique des équations de Maxwell et un formalisme par intégrales de volume. Il permet de simuler différentes configurations de CND par CF impliquant des défauts volumiques. Au cours de ces travaux, le modèle SIM a été développé pour traiter le cas des défauts d’ouverture petite. Le défaut est pris en compte au niveau du formalisme comme une source fictive de courants surfaciques, décrite par la fonction scalaire densité de dipôle. Des validations ont été effectuées, confrontant les réponses de sonde calculées par SIM, par VIM et obtenues expérimentalement. Le modèle SIM se révèle très rapide et bien adapté à l’obtention de cartographies 2D des réponses de sondes, avec une précision de l’ordre de 10% par rapport aux données expérimentales. Cependant, les hypothèses introduites dans le formalisme SIM sont très restrictives pour certaines configurations. Un nouveau modèle combinant SIM et VIM a été mis au point. Les résultats de simulation deviennent tout à fait satisfaisants dans toutes les configurations de contrôle étudiées. De plus, les performances en temps de calcul sont de l’ordre de celles du modèle SIM, tout en bénéficiant d’une précision proche de celle de la méthode VIM. Cette nouvelle méthode sera intégrée à terme à CIVA.

Book excerpt: Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le contexte de la simulation numérique pour le contrôle non destructif (CND) par courants de Foucault et concerne le calcul des champs électromagnétiques induits par un capteur émetteur dans une pièce saine. Ce calcul constitue la première étape de la modélisation complète d'un procédé de contrôle dans la plateforme logicielle CIVA développée au CEA LIST. Aujourd'hui les modèles intégrés dans CIVA sont restreints à des pièces de géométrie canonique (calcul modal) ou axisymétriques. La demande de configurations plus diverses et complexes nécessite l'introduction de nouveaux outils numériques de modélisation. En pratique les capteurs peuvent être constitués d'éléments aux propriétés physiques et aux formes variées. Quant aux pièces à contrôler, elles sont conductrices et peuvent contenir des éléments diélectriques ou magnétiques. Du fait des différents matériaux présents dans une même configuration, différents régimes de modélisation (statique, quasi-statique, voire dynamique) peuvent cohabiter. Sous l'hypothèse de travail de milieux à propriétés linéaires, isotropes et homogènes par morceaux, l'approche par équations intégrales de surface (SIE) permet de ramener le problème volumique à un problème surfacique équivalent. Cependant les formulations SIE usuelles pour le problème de Maxwell souffrent en général d'un problème de robustesse numérique pour certains cas asymptotiques, en particulier à basse fréquence. L'objectif de cette étude est de déterminer une version stable pour une gamme de paramètres physique typique du CND. C'est dans ce cadre qu’un schéma itératif par blocs basé sur une décomposition liée à la physique du problème est proposé. Ce schéma est précis et bien conditionné pour le calcul des champs primaires. Une étude asymptotique du problème intégral de Maxwell est de plus effectuée. Celle-ci permet de formuler le problème intégral de l'approximation courants de Foucault comme une forme asymptotique de celui de Maxwell.

We are doing a reprint of MIT Press's first edition of 1991, which again is based on the original French version of 1930, with an introduction added by the author in 1960. While the MIT Press version had black-and-white illustrations throughout, Park Books' new edition features some of Le Corbusier's drawings in color as they were in the earlier French editions. A new essay by British scholar Tim Benton, written for this new edition, contextualizes the book within Le Corbusier's oeuvre and comments on its lasting significance. The Precisions, as the book is known commonly, emerged from a spontaneous and exuberant series of 10 lectures Le Corbusier gave in Buenos Aires during the fall of 1929. As he spoke, Le Corbusier improvised drawings on large sheets of paper with crayons. While similar drawings appear in other works, here all the lectures and images appear in their original context as Le Corbusier assembled them more than 80 years ago. The texts reflect a new maturity in Le Corbusier's thinking and an extreme confidence in the development of his ideas. The drawings and lectures are unique in their eloquent and concise summary of his philosophy of architecture and urban design, stating the principles that informed his work from the 1920s on. They contain some of his most compelling aphorisms, both verbal and visual, covering technique as the basis of architecture, the human scale in design, furniture, the private house, apartments and office buildings, the city, the League of Nations competition, teaching architecture, and a splendid analysis of the transformation of his own work in houses from La Roche-Jeanneret to the Villa Savoye.
