Book excerpt: DANS CETTE ETUDE, SONT PROPOSEES DEUX METHODOLOGIES GENERALES D'OPTIMISATION DES STRUCTURES EN MATERIAUX COMPOSITES STRATIFIES (METHODOLOGIE D'OPTIMISATION MULTI-NIVEAUX ET METHODOLOGIE D'OPTIMISATION APPROCHEE) QUI PRENNENT EN COMPTE, COMME VARIABLES D'OPTIMISATION, L'ORIENTATION DES FIBRES ET L'EPAISSEUR DES COUCHES. DANS LA METHODOLOGIE D'OPTIMISATION MULTI-NIVEAUX ON DEFINIT LE NIVEAU DES SOUS-STRUCTURES ET CELUI DE LA STRUCTURE COMPLETE. ON MINIMISE LA MASSE EN FONCTION DE L'EPAISSEUR DE CHAQUE COUCHE. LES CONTRAINTES D'OPTIMISATION PORTENT SUR L'ORIENTATION DES FIBRES ET L'EPAISSEUR DE CHAQUE COUCHE (LE CRITERE DE CONVERGENCE GLOBALE EST CONTROLE: S'IL N'EST PAS SATISFAIT, ON EFFECTUE UNE OPTIMISATION DE LA STRUCTURE ENTIERE EN PRENANT POUR SEULE VARIABLE D'OPTIMISATION L'EPAISSEUR DES COUCHES DE CHAQUE SOUS-STRUCTURE). LA METHODOLOGIE D'OPTIMISATION APPROCHEE EVITE L'OPTIMISATION AU NIVEAU DE LA STRUCTURE ENTIERE. ELLE EST BASEE SUR UN CRITERE D'OPTIMALITE OU TOUTES LES SOUS-STRUCTURES ATTEIGNENT SIMULTANEMENT LA RUPTURE POUR AU MINIMUM UN CAS DE CHARGE. LA MOYENNE DES EFFORTS ET DES MOMENTS RESULTANTS EST CALCULEE ET PERMET D'OPTIMISER LES SOUS-STRUCTURES A L'ITERATION SUIVANTE. CES DEUX METHODOLOGIES SONT APPLIQUEES A DIFFERENTES STRUCTURES EN MATERIAUX COMPOSITES STRATIFIES. ON MONTRE QUE LA CONVERGENCE GLOBALE EST ATTEINTE. LES STRUCTURES OPTIMALES, QUOIQUE SORTANT DES HABITUDES INDUSTRIELLES ACTUELLES, SONT REALISABLES. LA COMPARAISON DE DIFFERENTS CRITERES DE RUPTURE PERMET DE RETENIR LE CRITERE DE TSAI-WU. LA METHODE DE LA PROGRAMMATION LINEAIRE RECURSIVE AVEC LIMITES MOBILES EST PREFEREE A UNE METHODE DE FONCTION DE PENALITE CAR ELLE DONNE DES RESULTATS PLUS RAPIDES ET NECESSITE MOINS DE CALCUL STRUCTURAL A CHAQUE ITERATION. UNE VERIFICATION EXPERIMENTALE DES TRAVAUX ENUMERES CI-DESSUS A ETE EFFECTUEE METTANT EN VALEUR UNE CORRESPONDANCE CORRECTE ENTRE LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENT

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we introduce a new global approach to the optimal design of laminated composites. This method uses the polar representation of plane tensors and the design of laminates is formulated as a constrained optimization problem without any pre-defined simplifying hypothesis. The design variables are all the constitutive parameters of the laminate. The first part of the thesis concerns the creation of a suitable genetic algorithm, BIANCA, able to handle any constrained/unconstrained and multi-objective optimization problems, and which is rich in its architecture and information representation. The genetic algorithm BIANCA is successfully applied to the resolution of optimal design problems for composite laminates, as they are formulated by our polar approach. Several practical cases are treated, and through an extended series of examples, we show the effectiveness and robustness of the polar-genetic method for the optimal design of composite laminates.

Book excerpt: Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline borne of the needs of the in dustrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of produc tivity and competitiveness that require engineering solutions, among others. The Mechanical Engineering Series features graduate texts and research monographs intended to address the need for information in contemporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that covers a broad range of concentrations important to mechanical engineering graduate education and re search. We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors on the advisory board, each an expert in one of the areas of concentration. The names of the consulting editors are listed on the next page of this volume. The areas of concentration are applied mechanics, biomechanics, computational mechan ics, dynamic systems and control, energetics, mechanics of materials, processing, thermal science, and tribology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and inexpensive introduction for an undergraduate course in glass science and technology. The level of the book has deliberately been maintained at the introductory level to avoid confusion of the student by inclusion of more advanced material, and is unique in that its text is limited to the amount suitable for a one term course for students in materials science, ceramics or inorganic chemistry. The contents cover the fundamental topics of importance in glass science and technology, including glass formation, crystallization, phase separation and structure of glasses. Additional chapters discuss the most important properties of glasses, including discussion of physical, optical, electrical, chemical and mechanical properties. A final chapter provides an introduction to a number of methods used to form technical glasses, including glass sheet, bottles, insulation fibre, optical fibres and other common commercial products. In addition, the book contains discussion of the effects of phase separation and crystallization on the properties of glasses, which is neglected in other texts. Although intended primarily as a textbook, Introduction to Glass Science and Technology will also be invaluable to the engineer or scientist who desires more knowledge regarding the formation, properties and production of glass.
