Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supporting newly hired science teachers has taken on an increased importance in our schools. This book shares the most current information about the status of newly hired science teachers, different ways in which to support newly hired science teachers, and different research approaches that can provide new information about this group of teachers. Chapters in the book are written by those who study the status of beginning science teachers, mentor new teachers, develop induction programs, and research the development of new science teachers. Newly Hired Teachers of Science is for administrators who have new science teachers in their schools and districts, professionals who create science teacher induction programs, mentors who work closely with new science teachers, educational researchers interested in studying new science teachers, and even new science teachers. This is a comprehensive discussion about new science teachers that will be a guiding document for years to come.
Book Synopsis The Sources of Innovation by : Eric von Hippel
Download or read book The Sources of Innovation written by Eric von Hippel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been assumed that new product innovations are typically developed by product manufacturers, an assumption that has inevitably had a major impact on innovation-related research and activities ranging from how firms organize their research and development to how governments measure innovation. In this synthesis of his seminal research, von Hippel challenges that basic assumption and demonstrates that innovation occurs in different places in different industries. Presenting a series of studies showing that end-users, material suppliers, and others are the typical sources of innovation in some fields, von Hippel explores why this variation in the "functional" sources of innovation occurs and how it might be predicted. He also proposes and tests some implications of replacing a manufacturer-as-innovator assumption with a view of the innovation process as predictably distributed across users, manufacturers, and suppliers. Innovation, he argues, will take place where there is greatest economic benefit to the innovator.
Book Synopsis Advances in Solid State Fermentation by : S. Roussos

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.HAINNAUX Departement Milieu et Activites Agricoles, Centre ORSTOM, 911 Avenue d' Agropolis, B.P. 5045, 34032 Montpellier Cedex , France. Solid state fermentation, popularly abbreviated as SSF, is currently investigated by many groups throughout the world. The study of this technique was largely neglected in the past in European and Western countries and there is now a high demand for SSF, meaning in food, environment, agricultural, phannaceutical and many other biotechnological applications. It gives me satisfaction to note that the importance of this technique was realised at my department way back in 1975 since then, our team has put concentrated efforts on developing this technique. xvii Foreword Advances in Solid State Fermentation Foreword M. PUYGRENIER Agropolis Valorisation, Avenue d' Agropolis, 34394 Montpellier Cedex 5, France. On the name of the Scientific Community, I would like to express the wish that this International Symposium on SSF should be successful. Solid State Fermentation is part of biotechnology research. It consists on seeding solid culture medium with bacteria or fungi (filamentous or higher) and on producing, in this medium (solid components and exudates) metabolites and high value products. In fact, this process is very old. In older industries such the food and agricultural, this technique has been extensively used. An example of this is the production of pork sausages and Roquefort cheese. Pharmaceutical industry could make extensive use of SSF in the production of secondary metabolites of many kinds and development in this direction is soon expected.

Book Synopsis Democratizing Innovation by : Eric Von Hippel
Download or read book Democratizing Innovation written by Eric Von Hippel and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-02-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we discover more about the role of the ocean in global changes and identify the effects of global change on the ocean, understanding its chemical composition and processes becomes increasingly paramount. However, understanding these processes requires a wide range of measurements in the vast ocean, from the sea surface to deep-ocean trenches, fr
Book Synopsis Modern Methods of Food Analysis by : K.K. Stewart
Download or read book Modern Methods of Food Analysis written by K.K. Stewart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Symposium on Modern Methods of Food Analysis was the sev enth in a series of basic symposia, begun in 1976, on topics of major importance to food scientists and food technologists. The Symposium, sponsored jointly by the Institute of Food Technologists and the In ternational Union of Food Science and Technology, was held June 17 and 18, 1983, in New Orleans immediately prior to the 43rd annual 1FT meeting. Like the other six basic symposia, the program brought together outstanding speakers, from biochemistry, chemistry, food science, microbiology and nutrition, who are at the cutting edge of their specialty, and provided a setting where they could interact with each other and with the participants. The Symposium and this book are dedicated to the memory of George F. Stewart (1908-1982) who made so many important contributions to the field of food science, including that of food analysis. Bernard S. Schweigert has documented George F. Stewart's contributions in the Dedication of this book.
