It is also an attempt to contextualize Islam in the current efforts in research on psychology so that we can better understand the religion, both as an established way of life and as a model of scientific inquiry. Finally, the remaining chapters are dedicated to the discussion of the conceptual and strategic way forward for research in specific areas of psychology. In doing so, both the rationale and practicalities of incorporating, integrating, and utilizing Islamic resources in research on psychology have been provided.

Book excerpt: In this book, Phan Le-Ha identifies and discusses four growing self-sustained/sustaining fundamental phenomena in transnational education (TNE), namely (1) the planned, evolving and transformative mediocrity behind the endorsement of English-medium education legitimized by the interactive Asia-the West relationship; (2) the strategic employment of the terms ‘Asia/Asian’ and ‘West/Western’ by all stakeholders in their perceptions and construction of choice, quality, rigour, reliability and attractiveness of programs, courses, and locations; (3) the adjusted desire for an imagined (and often misinformed) ‘West’ among various stakeholders of transnational education; and (4) the assigned and self-realized ownership of English by otherwise normally on-the-margin groups of speakers. A focus on how these phenomena impact questions of identity and desire in TNE is a running theme. The above phenomena are discussed against the backdrop of ‘the rise of Asia’ sentiment and how this sentiment has played out in interactions and relationships between ‘the West’ and ‘Asia’ and among Asian institutions and various entities. Phan Le-Ha’s examination of the identified phenomena in TNE has been informed by her multi-layered engagement with the dialectic of the Asia-the West relationship, her critical take on certain pro-Asia and decolonisation scholarship, and her interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to theorise the field and the specific topic under scrutiny. Phan Le-Ha shows that the current Asia chooses (not necessarily by force but largely by will and often with an informed and well-articulated agency) to go with the idea of the West and often desires an affiliation with the West either directly or indirectly, something that is getting more intense in the context of globalization, regionalization, and commercialization of education. The rise of Asia has made the idea of the West even more looked-for in Asia. TNE in Asia, in many ways, is the transforming and dynamic transit point, a layover that facilitates entry into a wanted destination – the West and/or the idea of the West. The West and Asia need one another more than ever in the context of the internationalization and commercialization of higher education. What’s more, the West and Asia have hardly ever been mutually exclusive but have rather been in an eventful love-and-obsession relationship with each other. This is the very dialectic proposition that Phan Le Ha takes throughout this book while paying specific attention to transnational higher education in the greater Asian region including the Middle East, following her several research projects conducted in the region since 2005 to date. In the field of culture, however, it resulted in an unintended consequence of Malay literature being heavily characterized by Islamic elements. Over the years, proponents of the Islamization of knowledge in Malaysia have moved beyond the fields of education and culture. They have entered the mainstream and become part of the state machinery, thus possibly impacting national policies. The concept has also evolved and arguably led to the strengthening of Islamic conservatism among Malaysian intellectual and cultural elites. More specifically, its exclusivist thinking does not augur well for intra- and intercommunal relations in the country.

Book excerpt: The range of perspectives and original materials dealt with here highlights the renewed urgency of the struggle for cultural autonomy and voice within the context of globalization. Each author explores how the various processes at both the local and global levels intersect to create new discourses and debates around the "indigenization of knowledge." If a new wind of cultural decolonization is blowing through the Arab Middle East and is having profound impact on the lives of men and women, then we should expect a new scholarship to emerge in order to grasp it. This book is a contribution in that direction. A key dimension concerns the issue of borders and boundaries. These are both real and imaginary (i.e., symbolic and metaphoric), hegemonic and counter-hegemonic. Among these borders are spatial ones that determine individuals' and communities' everyday location and place in the world--these include boundaries of class, gender, territory, and language. Each of these separations in turn has embedded in it, and rests on constructions of "imaginary" borders and boundaries. The real and imaginary do not exist as two disparate entities but are inextricably linked to each other in a dialectical move that simultaneously enables and disables movement and action. Current re-visioning of globalization challenges past suppositions. Globalization is a new form of an ongoing process that took inception during the heyday of colonialism. It might serve as a descriptive term to articulate the current historical period, but it remains theoretically problematic and imprecise. Situating Globalization picks up on the problematics of power and its dispersal and concentration. The bearers of these cultural flows seek legitimacy from their potential constituency by positing their language--cultural and religious--as local and therefore inherently in opposition to the hegemonic cultural knowledge that has seeped in from "outside" and led to disempowerment of local "peoples" and "knowledges." Bearers make no mention to this Islamist knowledge, of the "foreignness" of this idiom to many within the societies in question. Any attempt to contest their positioning and bearers of the indigenous results in charges of either betrayal or brainwashing. Cynthia Nelson is professor of anthropology and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College. She is author of Doria Shafik, Egyptian Feminist: A Woman Apart. Shahnaz Rouse is a member of its sociology faculty. Her research interests and publications cover agrarian transformation; social movements; the state, religion and gender identity.
