Book excerpt: The contemporary student veteran population is growing rapidly as service members who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts take advantage of the Post 9/11 Veteran Educational Assistance Act of 2008 to receive educational benefits to attend college (Cook & Kim, 2009). However, student veterans entering college today have a unique set of qualities and experiences. As an emerging student population, little is known about the experiences and perceptions these student veterans bring with them to college (DiRamio, Ackerman, & Mitchell, 2008). This study explored the nature of contemporary student veteran transition experiences from military life to college life to uncover (a) the factors that had positive effects on the contemporary student veteran transition process, and (b) the factors that posed challenges to the contemporary student veteran transition process. The information presented in this study has significance as it fills a knowledge gap that in existing literature regarding transitional experiences and perceptions of contemporary student veterans. In addition, the findings may serve as a foundation to improve the quality of resources available for those working to serve the needs of this growing student population.

Specifically, the study examined whether student veterans were utilizing military instilled strengths such as motivation, and emotional control and applying them toward their educational mission. Participants were reached via convenient sampling out of the VRC (Veteran Resource Center) on a metropolitan community campus by asking student veterans to conduct a survey on an IPad. Furthermore, snowball recruitment of participants was attained by means of mass email distribution of a survey link to members of the university’s SVO (Student Veteran Organization). Research results overall revealed no significant associations between military learned skills and academic performance. However, overall the student veteran sample seemed to identify strongly with military learned skills such as motivation and commitment that help them reach their academic goals.

In Grateful Nation Ellen Moore challenges these narratives by tracing the experiences of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans at two California college campuses. Drawing on interviews with dozens of veterans, classroom observations, and assessments of the work of veteran support organizations, Moore finds that veterans' academic struggles result from their military training and combat experience, which complicate their ability to function in civilian schools. While there is little evidence of antimilitary bias on college campuses, Moore demonstrates the ways in which college programs that conflate support for veterans with support for the institutional military lead to suppression of campus debate about the wars, discourage antiwar activism, and encourage a growing militarization.

Book excerpt: The three-fold primary purpose of this study was to: (a) describe student veterans at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in terms of independent variables, representing students' input characteristics, environmental factors, and BGSU experiences; (b) identify differences between student veteran persisters and nonpersisters in terms of these variables, and (c) determine how well these variables predicted persistence outcomes. Astin's Input-Environment-Outcome (I-E-O) framework (1993) and the work of Bean and Metzner (1985) on nontraditional student attrition were adapted to serve as the organizing framework for this study. The study sample (N = 537) comprised BGSU degree-seeking undergraduates who, based on their military service, received assistance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), during their first BGSU term, Fall 2009 - Fall 2015. Descriptive statistical analysis resulted in a detailed picture of the study sample, comparisons of persisters and nonpersisters, and profiles of associate and bachelor's degree completers. By the end of the study period (August 2017), 174 students (32.4%) had completed a BGSU degree and another 86 had reenrolled for at least one term, Spring 2017 or Summer 2017, constituting 260 persisters, 48.4% of the study sample. Chi-square tests of independence and independent samples t-tests were used to analyze differences between persisters and nonpersisters. Limited chi-square analyses of a small subset (n = 109) of the study sample failed to find statistically significant differences between persisters and nonpersisters on military experience variables (combat exposure, military rank, and reserve status). Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine which set of variables best predicted persistence status. Significant variables in the best-performing model (overall correct classification, 83.1%; -2LL = 416.633; Nagelkerke R2 = .609) were total transfer credits, VA benefit program, start term, residence hall status, first-term credit hours, first-term GPA, major change, and summer enrollment. This study, one of the few to employ student-level institutional data to examine persistence of contemporary student veterans, revealed the importance--and the challenges--of using this type of data to gain a more nuanced understanding of this diverse yet somewhat invisible population. Implications for student affairs policy and practice were considered and some future research directions suggested.

Book excerpt: Going to War to Go to College: Student Veterans in Academic Contact Zones In the current all-volunteer U.S. military, many low-income recruits enlist for educational benefits. Yet many veterans find that their military training and combat experience complicate their ability to function in civilian schools; many drop out. Extensive research explores military training methods and outcomes of the G.I. Bill, yet little has been written about site-specific intersections of military and civilian pedagogies and cultures on college campuses. Moreover, there has been little written about how the presence of student veterans on contemporary campuses affects public discourse about U.S. involvement in foreign wars. This dissertation contests one often-cited explanation for low veteran success rates in college: that civilian campuses are anti-military, and by extension, hostile to veterans. Using Lave's analysis of situated learning and Pratt's notion of `contact zones', and drawing upon Gramsci's concept of `common sense', this dissertation explores the experiences of U.S. Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans on two California college campuses. It follows student veterans as their previous military socialization comes into contact and conflict with civilian academic, student and cultural norms. Drawing on interviews, observation of classes and everyday practice of veteran support NGOs, the dissertation shows that conflicting pedagogical and cultural norms and practices, rather than ostensible hostility towards veterans, impede veterans' success in higher education. There is little evidence to support the claim that contemporary college campuses show anti-veteran bias; indeed, framing campuses as hostile to veterans and conflating veteran support with support for U.S. wars produces a militarized common sense. Militarized common sense is a worldview based on the assumptions that war is a natural and necessary aspect of maintaining and protecting nationhood; that military priorities are more important than non-military ones; and that war veterans should serve as positive public symbols and proxies for U.S. military projects and wars. Acceptance of these common-sense understandings has the effect of silencing debate and dissent about the wars on campuses. The trope of the anti-military campus, while not reflective of contemporary reality, is rooted in historic narratives about the Vietnam War, and when veteran support programs are embedded in a context of uncritical esteem for the military, veteran support becomes a social force that organizes and regulates public discourse about the wars. Through the creation of discourses of care for student veterans, which simultaneously frame veterans as victims of discrimination and as heroes deserving of public valorization, campuses promote programs that conflate support for the veteran with uncritical support for the institution of the military, which has the effect of silencing debate on campus about contemporary military conflicts. This dissertation reveals some of the unintended consequences of these discourses of care. Campus veteran support efforts that conflate support for veterans with support for the military may be counter-productive to veterans, their teachers and classmates, because they tend to preclude candid discussions about the U.S. military and U.S. wars, which can heighten the cultural divide between civilians and military members. Moreover, for many veterans, these enforced silences, coupled with heroic narratives about past and current wars, increase the cognitive dissonance between veterans' lived military experience and their campus lives, which in turn can negatively affect their success in college.

While data is emerging that suggest student veterans are succeeding in higher education, this study sought to reveal factors that contributed to the success of graduating student veterans in the hopes that these factors can be nurtured in current and future generations of student veterans to help ensure their success as students. Using a new method, the focused life-history narrative, and a conceptual model grounded in nontraditional student theory and Astin's IEO Model, this study suggests that success influencers emerge during the education of veterans, primarily from faculty and staff, but also from peer veterans, that serve to validate the decision to go to college by veterans and thus propels veterans forward to success. Other findings suggest that timely and accurate processing of education benefits serves to improve focus on the academic experience, rather than worrying about tuition and fee payments, enhancing success. Finally, this study suggests that structure and discipline are important to the successful degree attainment of veterans.
