Book Synopsis Contemporary Housing Struggles by : Ioana Florea
Download or read book Contemporary Housing Struggles written by Ioana Florea and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This OA book provides a comparative study of housing contention in Budapest and Bucharest in 2008-2021. The financialization of housing and the resulting inequalities, expulsions and social contention are a central characteristic of today's capitalist crisis. These two East European cities that fall outside the usual focus of urban movements research provide an illuminating case of similar structural conditions governed by different political constellations at the national and local scales. Instead of searching for unilinear narratives connecting structural tensions to politicized claims, the book offers an in-depth contextual analysis of multiple forms of contention, their (often unintentional) interactions, and their broader political-structural background, including tensions surrounded by political silence. The authors analyze the two cases and their comparative lessons through what they propose as a "structural field of contention" approach to the multiple, interconnected ways in which structural tensions become (or not) politicized in today's social movements. The book will appeal to everyone interested in today's urban tensions and social movements. .
Book Synopsis Modern Housing for America by : Gail Radford
Download or read book Modern Housing for America written by Gail Radford and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when many decry the failures of federal housing programs, this book introduces us to appealing but largely forgotten alternatives that existed when federal policies were first defined in the New Deal. Led by Catherine Bauer, supporters of the modern housing initiative argued that government should emphasize non-commercial development of imaginatively designed compact neighborhoods with extensive parks and social services. The book explores the question of how Americans might have responded to this option through case studies of experimental developments in Philadelphia and New York. While defeated during the 1930s, modern housing ideas suggest a variety of design and financial strategies that could contribute to solving the housing problems of our own time.

Book Synopsis In Defense of Housing by : Peter Marcuse
Download or read book In Defense of Housing written by Peter Marcuse and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every major city in the world there is a housing crisis. How did this happen and what can we do about it? Everyone needs and deserves housing. But today our homes are being transformed into commodities, making the inequalities of the city ever more acute. Profit has become more important than social need. The poor are forced to pay more for worse housing. Communities are faced with the violence of displacement and gentrification. And the benefits of decent housing are only available for those who can afford it. In Defense of Housing is the definitive statement on this crisis from leading urban planner Peter Marcuse and sociologist David Madden. They look at the causes and consequences of the housing problem and detail the need for progressive alternatives. The housing crisis cannot be solved by minor policy shifts, they argue. Rather, the housing crisis has deep political and economic roots—and therefore requires a radical response.
Download or read book Modern Housing written by Catherine Bauer and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original guide on modern housing from the premier expert and activist in the public housing movement Originally published in 1934, Modern Housing is widely acknowledged as one of the most important books on housing of the twentieth century, introducing the latest developments in European modernist housing to an American audience. It is also a manifesto: America needs to draw on Europe’s example to solve its housing crisis. Only when housing is transformed into a planned, public amenity will it truly be modern. Modern Housing’s sharp message catalyzed an intense period of housing activism in the United States, resulting in the Housing Act of 1937, which Catherine Bauer coauthored. But these reforms never went far enough: so long as housing remained the subject of capitalist speculation, Bauer knew the housing problem would remain. In light of today’s affordable housing emergency, her prescriptions for how to achieve humane and dignified modern housing remain as instructive and urgent as ever.
Book Synopsis Housing as Commons by : Stavros Stavrides
Download or read book Housing as Commons written by Stavros Stavrides and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences of the struggle for housing, ignited by the lack of social and affordable housing, have led to the establishing of shared and self-managed housing areas. In such a context, it becomes crucially important to re-think the need to define common urban worlds “from below". Here, Penny Travlou and Stavros Stavridis trace contemporary practices of urban commoning through which people re-define housing economies. Connecting to a rich literature on the importance of commons and of practices of commoning for the creation of emancipated societies, the authors discuss whether housing struggles and co-habitation experiences may contribute in crucial ways to the development of a commoning culture. The authors explore a variety of urban contexts through global case studies from across the Global North and South, in search of concrete examples that illustrate the potentialities of urban commoning.

Book Synopsis Housing Movements in Rome by : Carlotta Caciagli
Download or read book Housing Movements in Rome written by Carlotta Caciagli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores contemporary challenges of housing movement organizations, looking specifically at the case of Rome, Italy. The work identifies conditions that allow the re-composition of a class of housing dispossessed and, consequently, the features of its action in urban spaces. The book offers fresh analytical perspectives to understanding contemporary urban transformation via new spatial and strategic approaches. In striking detail, Carlotta Caciagli shows how space is a crucial variable in shaping the strategies that allow for the politicisation of a movement’s social base. She illustrates how new spatial configurations of urban space result from unique struggles of the recomposed collective subject. Most notably, three main conceptual tools are introduced to disentangle the relationship between the recomposed precarious class and space: “the spatial opportunity structure”, “configurations of strategies” and “educational sites of resistance”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new source provides greater insight into and awareness of housing experiences in other societies, allowing for a more informed assessment of our own national experiences and priorities. This unique compilation points to the value of cross-national work when dealing with these complex issues. Choice Housing issues and policy problems are both universal in scope and, at the same time, inherently specific to a given time and place. All countries are wrestling with their own housing problems and with the everyday mechanics of housing supply and regulation. Specific problems vary immensely from country to country and the policy instruments and institutions chosen to address those problems vary. As the chapters in this volume make clear, definitions of housing problems and approaches to housing policies are firmly embedded in particular national and cultural contexts. A long-awaited signal publication, this book is an important new source of analyses and information necessary to understand these contexts. It also is a major work of reference that provides the raw materials for undertaking comparative studies of housing issues and policy problems. The contributors are renowned authorities in the field who demonstrate how housing is worldwide an integral component of a nation's financial system, its social structure, and its political and policy making apparatus. Because this book provides greater insight in and awareness of experiences in other societies, it allows for a more informed assessment of our own national experiences and priorities. As the contributors make clear, there are no complete or simple solutions to contemporary housing problems. This unique compilation points to the value of cross-national work when dealing with these complex issues. It will be essential reading for scholars and policymakers alike who are concerned with housing issues.
Book Synopsis Escaping the Housing Trap by : Charles L. Marohn, Jr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing is an investment. Investment prices must go up. Housing is shelter. When the price of shelter goes up, people experience distress. This is the housing trap. It’s time to escape. In Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis, renowned urbanists Charles (Chuck) Marohn and Daniel Herriges introduce a first-of-its-kind discussion of the tension between housing as a financial product and housing as shelter. This is the key insight that’s been missing from the Housing Crisis Conversation; and the insight that can help cities fight back against the crisis from the bottom-up. This book offers a serious, yet accessible, history of housing policy in the United States and explains how it led us to this point in time: where we face a market that is rigged against people who, only a few decades ago, could have been homeowners or stable, long-term rentals. Only local change, on a neighborhood or city-wide scale, can begin to restore balance to the housing market. Escaping the Housing Trap is the must-read resource for everyone with a stake in the future of housing in America—and that means everyone. Readers will find: Discussions of housing as an investment and how the country's neighborhoods are being transformed by the introduction of large amounts of investment Explorations of housing as shelter, including discussions of zoning policy and NIMBYism A comprehensive overview of the Strong Towns approach to solving the American housing crisis
Book Synopsis Rent and Its Discontents by : Neil Gray
Download or read book Rent and Its Discontents written by Neil Gray and published by Transforming Capitalism. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1915 Rent Strikes in Glasgow, along with similar campaigns across the UK, catalysed rent restrictions and eventually public housing as a right, with a legacy of progressive improvement in UK housing through the central decades of the 20th century. With the decimation of social housing and the resurgence of a profoundly exploitative private housing market, the contemporary political economy of housing now shares many distressing features with the situation one hundred years ago. Starting with a re-appraisal of the Rent Strikes, this book asks what housing campaigners can learn today from a proven organisational victory for the working class. A series of investigative accounts from scholar-activists and housing campaign groups across the UK charts the diverse aims, tactics and strategies of current urban resistance, seeking to make a vital contribution to the contemporary housing question in a time of crisis.

The respective chapters address issues such as the popularity of cities, the question of a credit-fueled housing bubble, the role of housing supply frictions and potential policy solutions. Book Synopsis Housing, Urban Commons and the Right to the City in Post-Crisis Rome by : Margherita Grazioli
Download or read book Housing, Urban Commons and the Right to the City in Post-Crisis Rome written by Margherita Grazioli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of Metropoliz, a vacant salami factory located in the Eastern periphery of Rome (Italy) that was squatted in 2009 by homeless households with the cooperation of the Housing Rights Movement Blocchi Precari Metropolitani, and progressively reconverted into the house and museum spaces that form the Città Meticcia (the mestizo city). Through a vivid activist-ethnographic account, Margherita Grazioli suggests that Metropoliz exemplifies a practice of grassroots urban regeneration that speaks to the conflicted reconfiguration of real estate urban regimes in a post-crisis, post-neoliberal scenario. Using the contentious reappropriation of housing as a point of departure for claiming manifold rights, Metropoliz represents an alternative model of urbanity and habitation that will inspire contemporary urban social movements concerned with the demand of the ‘right to the city’, as well as those concerned with the ontology of the urban commons.
