Book excerpt: Crimes Against Consumers is a multidisciplinary anthology that combines criminal justice and consumer affairs to help readers understand consumer crime and how they can protect themselves against it through education and self-advocacy. The carefully curated readings address aspects of consumer law, white collar crime, corporate and computer crime, and more. The anthology begins by introducing criminal justice students to fundamentals of consumerism, marketing, and behavior choice. The next sections introduce consumer affairs or general education students to criminal justice concepts. Subsequent sections are devoted to exploring specific forms of crime including financial crimes, identity theft, cyber-crime, crime in healthcare, and crimes against those who may not know how protect themselves such as the elderly. The anthology concludes with a section on the role of law enforcement and other civil protections. Each of the five sections of the book has an original introduction to provide context for the readings and questions that can be used for in-class discussion or serve as writing prompts. The broad coverage of the topic makes the anthology suitable for a wide range of courses, particularly those in consumer affairs and criminal justice.

Book excerpt: Fines and monetary damages account for the majority of legal sanctions across the whole spectrum of legal governance. Money is, in key respects, the primary tool law has to achieve compliance. Yet money has largely been ignored by social analyses of law, and especially by social theory. The Currency of Justice examines the differing rationalities, aims and assumptions built into money’s deployment in diverse legal fields and sanctions. This raises major questions about the extent to which money appears as an abstract universal or whether it takes on more particular meanings when deployed in various areas of law. Indeed, money may be unique in that it can take on the meanings of punishment, compensation, denunciation or regulation. The Currency of Justice examines the implications of the ‘monetization of justice’ as life is increasingly regulated through this single medium. Money not only links diverse domains of law; it also links legal sanctions to other monetary techniques which govern everyday life. Like these, the concern with monetary sanctions is not who pays, but that money is paid. Money is perhaps the only form of legal sanction where the burden need not be borne by the wrongdoer. In this respect, this book explores the view that contemporary governance is less concerned with disciplining individuals and more concerned with regulating distributions and flows of behaviours and the harms and costs linked with these.

Book excerpt: "Your toolkit for prevention, redemption, and occasionally retribution." -Ralph Nader Whenever you purchase goods or services in a personal, household, or family capacity, you are entitled to the rights and remedies of state and federal consumer law. Realistically, only a very small percentage of consumer problems can be addressed by hiring a private attorney. Everyday Law for Consumers teaches practical self-help remedies that ordinary Americans can use to protect their consumer rights. Michael L. Rustad, a nationally known practicing attorney and legal scholar, translates into plain English the legalese that forms the basis for many common transactions, including consumer loans, credit repair, credit, consumer leases, usury, interest rates, Internet transactions, identity theft, distance contracts, home shopping, television advertisements, door-to-door sales, and telephone solicitations. Using real-life examples, sample complaint letters, and an appendix of further examples, this easy-to-read book empowers everyday people to become effective self-advocates in an increasingly consumer-driven society.

Book excerpt: Leslie Wilkins, a criminologist respected on both sides of the Atlantic, argues for the need of adopting new techniques, borrowed from consumerism, to deal with crime analysis. Believing that the public, or consumer of criminal justice services, has fared poorly from the existing criminal justice system, he suggests that better 'market research' and management techniques will, if adopted, improve the understanding of both crime and sentencing.
