Over the past two decades these three disciplines have increasingly become closer. Historically there was always a strong overlap between particle physics and cosmology. This connection has become even stronger with the realization that some of the fundamental issues in cosmology such as the presence of dark matter and dark energy may possibly find a resolution only via new theories of particle physics. At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study on phenomenology of beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the context of extensions of supersymmetric realisations. This extended framework allows us to accommodate viable dark matter (DM) candidates which the SM do not have, and it offers a unified gauge structure for all three nuclear forces. With this motivation, we investigated two possible extensions of MSSM and their predictabilities in future collider experiments. First, we presented an extension of MSSM via vector-like (VL) supermultiplets which can provide new annihilation channels for dark matter. We investigate a simple extension with two VL pairs of weak doublets (lepton and down-type quark) and a pair of VL-neutrino singlets. Both neutralino and sneutrinos can emerge as viable DM candidates in such a framework. A complete analysis has been conducted on the DM. Furthermore, we investigate specific collider signatures that such construction can bring and demonstrate the enhanced production of events fortified with tau leptons. Secondly, we investigated U(1) extensions of the MSSM framework within E6 gauge structure by conducting a detailed analysis of the parameter space that can emerge through a variety of U(1)' charge structures. Such a scenario predicts two DM candidates, neutralino and sneutrino. We presented a detailed analysis of low energy and cosmological observables. It is also vital to present the specific signatures that such gauge structure can bring into collider experiments. A heavy Z' boson is one of the identifying features of such a framework. We investigated possible loopholes in analyses where we observed that Z' mass bounds can be relaxed up to 300 GeV by changing the boundary conditions on the gauge couplings. We presented possible leptophobic scenarios which can be observed through supersymmetric cascade decays up to $7\sigma$ statistical significance at $ \sqrt{s}=14 $~TeV with 3 ab-1 integrated luminosity. Finally, we revisited the current LHC bounds on supersymmetric particles in the light of theoretical uncertainties and studied high luminosity predictions. We investigated the effects of these uncertainties on gluino, squark mass limits and on coupling sensitivity of simplified s-channel DM models.

This book is a comprehensive introduction to these recent developments. It contains a review of the Standard Model, covering non-perturbative topics, and a discussion of grand unified theories and magnetic monopoles. It introduces the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and includes dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then covers general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies before discussing the spectra of known string theories and the features of their interactions. The book also includes brief introductions to technicolor, large extra dimensions, and the Randall-Sundrum theory of warped spaces. This will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains several problems, and password protected solutions will be available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521858410.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together reviews from leading international authorities on the developments in the study of dark matter and dark energy, as seen from both their cosmological and particle physics side. Studying the physical and astrophysical properties of the dark components of our Universe is a crucial step towards the ultimate goal of unveiling their nature. The work developed from a doctoral school sponsored by the Italian Society of General Relativity and Gravitation. The book starts with a concise introduction to the standard cosmological model, as well as with a presentation of the theory of linear perturbations around a homogeneous and isotropic background. It covers the particle physics and cosmological aspects of dark matter and (dynamical) dark energy, including a discussion of how modified theories of gravity could provide a possible candidate for dark energy. A detailed presentation is also given of the possible ways of testing the theory in terms of cosmic microwave background, galaxy redshift surveys and weak gravitational lensing observations. Included is a chapter reviewing extensively the direct and indirect methods of detection of the hypothetical dark matter particles. Also included is a self-contained introduction to the techniques and most important results of numerical (e.g. N-body) simulations in cosmology. " This volume will be useful to researchers, PhD and graduate students in Astrophysics, Cosmology Physics and Mathematics, who are interested in cosmology, dark matter and dark energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The race is on to construct the first quantum code breaker, as the winner will hold the key to the entire Internet. From international, multibillion-dollar financial transactions to top-secret government communications, all would be vulnerable to the secret-code-breaking ability of the quantum computer. Written by a renowned quantum physicist closely involved in the U.S. government’s development of quantum information science, Schrödinger’s Killer App: Race to Build the World’s First Quantum Computer presents an inside look at the government’s quest to build a quantum computer capable of solving complex mathematical problems and hacking the public-key encryption codes used to secure the Internet. The "killer application" refers to Shor’s quantum factoring algorithm, which would unveil the encrypted communications of the entire Internet if a quantum computer could be built to run the algorithm. Schrödinger’s notion of quantum entanglement—and his infamous cat—is at the heart of it all. The book develops the concept of entanglement in the historical context of Einstein’s 30-year battle with the physics community over the true meaning of quantum theory. It discusses the remedy to the threat posed by the quantum code breaker: quantum cryptography, which is unbreakable even by the quantum computer. The author also covers applications to other important areas, such as quantum physics simulators, synchronized clocks, quantum search engines, quantum sensors, and imaging devices. In addition, he takes readers on a philosophical journey that considers the future ramifications of quantum technologies. Interspersed with amusing and personal anecdotes, this book presents quantum computing and the closely connected foundations of quantum mechanics in an engaging manner accessible to non-specialists. Requiring no formal training in physics or advanced mathematics, it explains difficult topics, including quantum entanglement, Schrödinger’s cat, Bell’s inequality, and quantum computational complexity, using simple analogies.

Book excerpt: The Physical World offers a grand vision of the essential unity of physics that will enable the reader to see the world through the eyes of a physicist and understand their thinking. The text follows Einstein's dictum that 'explanations should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler', to give an honest account of how modern physicists understand their subject, including the shortcomings of current theory. The result is an up-to-date and engaging portrait of physics that contains concise derivations of the important results in a style where every step in a derivation is clearly explained, so that anyone with the appropriate mathematical skills will find the text easy to digest. It is over half a century since The Feynman Lectures in Physics were published. A new authoritative account of fundamental physics covering all branches of the subject is now well overdue. The Physical World has been written to satisfy this need. The book concentrates on the conceptual principles of each branch of physics and shows how they fit together to form a coherent whole. Emphasis is placed on the use of variational principles in physics, and in particular the principle of least action, an approach that lies at the heart of modern theoretical physics, but has been neglected in most introductory accounts of the subject.

Book excerpt: The study of physics beyond the Standard Model is one of the main focuses of particle physics, in which many questions remain unanswered and none of the proposed solutions has emerged as the most probable. Confirming or disproving whether a model is realised in nature requires a precise study of its phenomenology. In quantum field theory, such calculations are often performed using perturbative techniques. The high degree of precision necessary to assess the correctness of the predictions of a given model means, in this context, taking into account higher-order corrections in the interaction in consideration. In this thesis, we calculate next-to-leading order corrections in the strong coupling (or NLO-QCD corrections, from quantum chromodynamics) for several processes in the context of supersymmetry and dark matter searches. We calculate NLO-QCD corrections to the weakino-squark production processes in the Minimal Supersymmetrical Standard Model (MSSM), including the subtraction of the on-shell resonances appearing in the real emission corrections to this process. We match the fixed-order calculation to the parton-shower (PS) program PYTHIA using the POWHEG method. We can therefore calculate the NLO-QCD cross sections including PS effects for these processes and generate differential distributions at the NLO+PS level. These processes are responsible for interesting experimental signatures, like hard jets and large quantities of missing transverse momentum. Our code will be publicly available for future phenomenological and experimental studies. Additionally, we study the phenomenology of dark matter pair-production processes at hadron colliders in the context of simplified models, studying the similarity between these processes and the production of neutralino-pairs in the MSSM. We perform this comparison at NLO-QCD accuracy, exploring a vaste range of supersymmetric scenarios. Simplified models are often interpreted as low-energy limits of a UV-complete theory, and we aim at understanding to what extent an s- and a t-channel model are able to reproduce the phenomenology of the far more complex MSSM. We also investigate the same simplified models for dark matter in a completely different scenario, namely direct detection experiments. We calculate NLO-QCD corrections in the non-relativistic regime and match our results to the Wilson coefficients and operators of an effective field theory, to express our results in the terms generally used for experimental results in direct dark matter searches. We then perform a phenomenological study, comparing the limits set in collider searches and the ones set by the direct detection experiments CRESST and XENON.

Book excerpt: We study several scenarios beyond the Standard Model from a string theory perspective, including supersymmetry breaking scenarios, axions and extended gauge sectors from D-brane compactifications. In the study of supersymmetry breaking scenarios, we find effective field theories with non-supersymmetric perturbations to supersymmetric flux compactifications of type IIB string theories exhibit soft supersymmetry breaking. From a Wilsonian point of view that spontaneous breaking is generically soft, this implies the supersymmetry-breaking may be spontaneous. We also identify a candidate of the goldstino that triggers the spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. In the study of axions and gauge sectors, we focus on different U(1) mixing effects. We find in a scenario small electric charges carried by dark matter particles arise exclusively from the kinetic mixing of at least 2 massless U(1) gauge bosons, while the mass mixing of the U(1)'s coupled to axions leads to a natural portal into the hidden sector which we refer to as Stueckelberg Portal. The millicharge dark matter scenario shows the converse of a previous statement by Holdom that kinetic mixing can lead to particles with milli electric charges is true, and thus experimentally a detection of millicharged dark matter would imply the existence of extra massless U(1)'s. The Stueckelberg Portal not only has many nice phenomenological features (e.g. sizable tree-level interactions, free of chiral exotics due to the tadpole cancellation by Green-Schwarz mechanism, and the possibility to lower the lightest Z' mass), but provides a simple and concrete way to realize Z'-mediation and hidden valley. In addition, it can be naturally and elegantly implemented in string theory. We provide an explicit D-brane configuration to realize this scenario, and this is the first global embedding of a genuine hidden sector (no chiral exotics) in D-brane constructions.
