Book excerpt: This 100th anniversary volume of Bibliotheca Lichenologica, pays tribute to the diversity in lichenology. Multiple, cosmopolitan aspects of the research on lichens in its breadth are reflected in the large variety of subjects covered in 18 chapters by 37 authors from 13 countries. The chapters document recent developments in taxonomy, phytogenetic analyses, phylogenetic research, fl oristic studies and lichen ecology, and - again - a large number of newly described taxa, keys to the identifi cation of Usnea, and details of current analytical work. A personal review by Ingvar Kärnefelt of past and present contributors to lichenology. His biographical sketches provide a good measure of the multi-faceted nature of lichenology and of the expertise involved in its development, paying tribute to Bibliotheca Lichenologica's anniversary. The volume was carefully edited by three prominent and active members of the lichenological community, Arne Thell, University of Lund, Sweden, Mark R. D. Seaward, University of Bradford, United Kingdom, and Tassilo Feuerer, University of Hamburg, Germany.

Book excerpt: Lichenologische Nebenstunden (lichenological studies after hours) features twenty-seven peer reviewed contributions by 51 authors. The majority of papers have a taxonomic background, both classical and molecular, in accordance to Klaus Kalb's own research interests, covering a wide topical range. One paper seeks to delineate ecological groups of lichens on two species of trees of the Thailand rainforests. Furthermore, papers in this volume describe a number of new species nine of which are named in honour of Klaus Kalb.

Book excerpt: The Lichens covers the structure and development, physiology of the intact thallus, environmental response and effects, secondary metabolic products, and symbiont interactions of lichens. This book is divided into five parts encompassing 19 chapters. It also includes appendices consist of a taxonomic scheme, methods for isolating and culturing lichen symbionts and thalli, and methods for isolating and identifying lichen substances. The first part of this book describes the original fungal cell and its development into specialized cells of which the various tissues and thalli are composed. This is followed by discussions on sexual reproduction of ascolichens and basidiolichens and on systematic criteria for the definition of taxa in different hierarchical steps. This book also explains the types of propagules produced by lichens and the submicroscopical investigations of lichens, including phycobiont and mycobionts' substructure and symbiotic relationship. The second part of this book examines the physiological aspects of lichens. It includes discussions on metal cation uptake and translocation in vascular plants and on lichens' role in rock weathering and soil formation. This part also studies photosynthetic rates and nitrogen absorption and metabolism by the intact thallus of lichens. Succeeding chapters discuss physiological and morphological responses of lichens to the most important environmental factors and the relationship of these factors to lichen distribution. Substrate preferences of lichens and their causes and implications with regard to the ecology, distribution, and taxonomy of lichens are also examined. This text also discusses lichen thalli growth, methods of measurement, and factors influencing growth. Finally, the concluding parts deal with the biosynthesis of lichen substances, secondary metabolic products, and symbiotic relations of lichens to fungi and algae. This multi-authored book is an ideal source of information for researchers, teachers, and students who wish to broaden their knowledge in the diversity of lichenology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 102 of Bibliotheca Lichenologica presents a revision of the corticolous paleotropical lichen species of Opegrapha (Roccellaceae, Arthoniales). Forty-five species are accepted, of which eight are new to science: Opegrapha bisokeana sp. nova, O. borbonica sp. nova, O. deblockiae sp. nova, O. dekeselii sp. nova, O. maldiveana sp. nova, O. nyungweana sp. nova, O. subdimidiata sp. nova and O. ugandensis sp. nova. Thirty-one names are considered to be new synonyms of accepted species and six species examined during the study are combined in other genera: Arthonia sororiella comb. Nova (bas. O. sororiella), Enterographa subcervina comb. nova (bas. O. subcervina), Lecanographa martii comb. nova (bas. O. martii), L. rufa comb. nova (bas. O. rufa), L. subnothella comb. nova (bas. O. subnothella) and Patellaria stirtonii comb. nova (bas. O. stirtonii). Three species previously described as lichens (O. agelaea, O. gregalis and O. nigeriensis) are demonstrated to be lichenicolous fungi. Nine species are considered as doubtful or are excluded from the genus. The volume also provides a key to all species of lichenized and corticolous Opegrapha from the Paleotropics, that is Africa and Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lichen Flora of Great Britain and Ireland published in 1992 was an outstanding achievement for British Lichenology. It was a pioneering work and the first of its type in Europe. This much enlarged revision reflects the considerable accumulation of new information that has occurred since the publication of the first edition and is symptomatic of the enormous advances in lichen taxonomy over the last two decades. There are keys to 327 genera and 1873 species, which is an increase of 386 species since it was first published. The publication provides detailed information on morphology, chemistry and distribution for each species written in language that is readily accessible, avoiding obscure terminology. Both the glossary and introductory sections have been expanded and the latter includes helpful advice on the identification and examination of lichens. The preparation of this new treatment has involved a large number of contributors both in the UK and overseas and represents the culmination of lichen studies at this time. This book is undoubtedly the standard work for the identification of lichens in Great Britain and Ireland and will be indispensable to all serious students of British, Irish and overseas lichenology and other biologists working in related fields of ecology, pollution, chemical and environmental studies."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-level revision is given for the 29 species of Bulbothrix, a generic segregate of Parmelia characterized by marginal bulbate cilia and production of atranorin in the upper cortex. The genus is primarily tropical in distribution and best developed in secondary forests. The main center of speciation is Brazil with 14 species, and the genus is also well represented in Africa. The New World species have a high frequency of depsides and orcinol depsidones, whereas the Old World species usually contain & beta;-orcinol depsidones. One new species, B. klementii Hale, and one new combination, B. goebelii (Zenker) Hale, are proposed.
