Book excerpt: The connections and tensions between siblings may impact the development and well-being that children with ASD and their typically developing (TD) siblings experience. Parenting style and parental stress are two factors that impact a caregiver's ability to effectively foster positive relationships. Finally, the interplay between sibling relationships, caregiver characteristics, sibling involvement in intervention, and success in ASD intervention is of interest. Primary caregivers (N = 108) completed an online questionnaire and a hierarchical multiple regression was conducted. Results indicated: 1) Parenting stress explains 12% of the variance found in the warmth and closeness of sibling relationships; 2) Sibling involvement and success in ASD intervention cumulatively contributes to 13.5% of the variance found in the warmth and closeness of sibling relationships; and 3) warmth and closeness uniquely explains 7% of the variance of success in ASD intervention. Limitations, practical implications, and future research direction will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Theory of mind (ToM) is thought to be fundamental to successful navigation of the social world. Individual differences in ToM in children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have prompted the examination of possible contextual correlates of this ability, including the sibling constellation. Both the presence and age of siblings, and in children with ASD, specific roles of older and younger siblings, have been linked to ToM. In contrast, scant attention has been paid to early peer social experiences, which could play a role in ToM development. Additionally, the association between ToM and school readiness is in need of empirical refinement in the typically developing (TD) literature, and has been understudied in ASD. The current multi-method study examined links among early child care experiences, friendship quality, the sibling constellation, ToM, and school readiness in a sample of 96 children (4-6 years) and their parents: 63 children with ASD and 33 TD children. Children were administered a battery of ToM tasks and a behavioral measure of school readiness. Parents reported on their child's history of child care, friendship quality, sibling constellation, and socio-emotional and self-help school readiness. Results of separate multiple regression models indicated poorer positive friendship quality, ToM, and school readiness in children with ASD compared to TD children. Positive friendship quality was positively related to social-emotional school readiness and self-help school readiness in children with and without ASD, but it was positively associated with ToM in children with ASD, and negatively associated with ToM in TD children. Little evidence was observed for an association between child care experiences and ToM in either diagnostic group. A relatively consistent inverted U-shaped relationship was observed between time spent in center-based care and aspects of school readiness in children with ASD. Number of child-aged siblings and presence of older siblings were positively associated with ToM in a subgroup of children with ASD. ToM was also positively associated with cognitive/motor school readiness in children with ASD; this relationship was mediated by receptive language ability. These findings may serve to inform parents, child development professionals, and interventions targeting ToM and school readiness.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study is an investigation into how having a sibling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects sibling relationships, specifically, how typically developing adults perceive their relationships with their siblings who have autism and the effects of autism on their relationship and their lives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three typically developing adults who had siblings with autism spectrum disorder. Thematic analysis of the interviews produced five themes regarding the effects of autism on sibling relationships and the typically developing siblings’ lives. The findings show that the participants experienced both hardships and benefits of having a sibling with ASD. Their most frequently mentioned hardships were parents’ disproportionate attention paid to their siblings with ASD and its effects on their relationship with their parents, some barriers to forming friendships, and a heightened sense of responsibility for the affected sibling. The most frequently mentioned benefits of having a sibling with autism were effects on personal development, forming friendships with others in similar situations, and valued relationships with the siblings who have autism. In addition, all participants stated having a very close relationship with their siblings with autism.

Having siblings has been associated with better social communication, non-verbal communication, and theory of mind abilities in ASD. However, little is known about the impact of siblings on adaptive skill growth over time, even though adaptive behavior competencies are among the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in ASD. This study examined the influence of sibling constellation factors, including the presence of siblings, position in birth order, gender of closest-age sibling, and gender match of sibling dyad on the adaptive behavior trajectories of individuals with ASD and non-spectrum disorders from ages 9-26 years. Participants with one or more siblings, regardless of birth order position, experienced faster growth rates in adaptive behavior than participants without siblings. Additional benefits were noted when participants' closest-age siblings were male and when participants were gender-matched with their closest-age siblings.
