This book was released on 1997 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed with four aims: (1) to assess the level of congruence between therapists' and patients' conception of psychotherapy, (2) to compare the views of psychotherapy held by first-time and returning patients, (3) to examine the degree to which patients' expectations change across time and, (4) to assess the relationship between level of congruence and the process, duration and outcome of treatment. In addressing these aims, four separate sets of analyses were conducted. In the first, the preferences regarding role behavior and expectations regarding duration of 255 patients in individual outpatient psychotherapy were compared to therapists' actual role behaviors and expectations regarding duration. In the second analysis, the preferences regarding role behavior and expectations regarding duration and improvement of first-time patients were compared with those of returning patients. In the third analysis, patients' expectations regarding duration along with their preferences for directive and non-directive role behavior were assessed at fixed intervals across treatment. The fourth analysis assessed the impact of within-dyad congruence on process, duration and outcome. Results indicate the majority of patients were well informed concerning the basic nature of psychotherapy and generally desired role behaviors congruent with those therapists employed. Areas of notable incongruence included the expectation of duration and the provision of guidance and advice by the therapist. The preferences and expectations of returning patients were in closer alignment with what therapists were offering and expecting than were the preferences and expectations of first-time patients. Assessing expectations and preferences across time within a single episode of treatment indicating these constructs are quite stable. Neither ANOVA's nor correlational analyses yielded any evidence of a consistent relationship between within-dyad congruence and Therapeutic Bond, duration or improvement. These results are discussed in light of their implications for future research.

Norcross University of Scranton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002-08-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of the American Psychological Association's Division of Psychotherapy (Div. 29) Task Force aimed at applying psychological science to the identification and promulgation of effective psychotherapy. Many efforts to improve therapy have focused on codifying evidence-based treatments, but in doing so have left the psychotherapeutic relationship behind. Clinical experience and research findings underscore that the therapeutic relationship accounts for as much of the outcome as particular treatments. This volume's 25 chapters identify the elements of effective therapy relationships and methods of customizing psychotherapy to each patient.

Book Synopsis Client-centered and Experiential Psychotherapy in the Nineties by : Richard Balen
Download or read book Client-centered and Experiential Psychotherapy in the Nineties written by Richard Balen and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This voluminous book of 47 chapters offers a good cross section of what is burgeoing in the field of client-centered and experiential psychotherapy on the threshold of the nineties. it does not represent a single vision but gives the floor to the various suborientations: classics Rogerians; client-centered therapists who favor some form of integration or even eclecticism; experiential psychotherapists for whom Gendlin's focusing approach is a precious way of working; client-centered therapists who look at the therapy process in terms of information-processing; existentially oriented therapists... Remarkable is that - for the first time in the history of client-centered/experiential psychotherapy - the European voice rings through forcefully: more than half of the contributions were written by authors from Western Europe.Several chapters contain reflections on the evolution--past, present, and future--of client-centered/experiential psychotherapy. The intensive research into the process, which had a central place in the initial phase of client-centered therapy, is given here ample attention, with several creative studies and proposals for renewal. In numerous contributions efforts are made to build and further develop a theroy of psychopathology, the client's process, the basic attitudes and task-oriented interventions of the therapist. The chapters dealing with clinical practice typically aim at the description of therapy with specific client populations and paricularly severely disturbed clients. And finally a few fields are introduced which are new or barely explored within the client-centered/experiential approach: working with dreams, health psychology, couple and family therapy.

Book Synopsis On Becoming a Person by : Carl Rogers
Download or read book On Becoming a Person written by Carl Rogers and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists describes his experiences in helping people to discover the path to personal growth through an understanding of their own limitations and potential. What is personal growth? Under what conditions is it possible? How can one person help another? What is creativity, and how can it be fostered? These are some of the issues raised, which challenge many concepts of traditional psychology. Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory, or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour, or with the mentally ill. But there are rebels, of whom the author counts himself as one, along with Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow and Rollo May, who feel that psychology and psychiatry should be aiming higher, and be more concerned with growth and potentiality in man. The interest of such a psychology is in the production of harmoniously mature individuals, given that we all have qualities and possibilities infinitely capable of development. Successful development makes us more flexible in relationships, more creative, and less open to suggestion and control. This book, philosophical and provocative, summarizes Dr Rogers' experience. Non-technical in its language, it is not only for psychologists and psychiatrists, but for teachers and counsellors, religious and social workers, labour-management specialists and anyone interested in 'becoming'.
