The study of the historical background of the two conflicts however, reveals deep differences in the composition of these two societies, the role that ethnicity and religion played in causing the crisis, and the role that external factors played in the internal affairs of Lebanon and Bosnia. Major theories of the ethnic conflict are examined in order to find out which one(s) could apply to these two cases. The theories of prevention of the inter-communal conflict are examined for the same purpose.--Once the crisis deteriorates into an open conflict, the external actors can intervene with the ultimate goal of either managing the conflict in order to limit its harmful interference, or, more ambitiously, resolving the conflict completely by addressing all underlying issues and attempting to comprehensively solve the outstanding problems.

Book excerpt: Lebanon experienced serious instability and ethno-national conflict following the Syrian withdrawal in 2005, compounded by the Arab Spring, which led to regional instability and civil war in Iraq and Syria. Why did consociational democracy fail? Was failure inevitable? What impact could external powers play in creating an environment where consociationalism might be successfully implemented? This book addresses these key questions and provides a comprehensive analysis of how internal and external elite relations influence the chances of a successful regulation of ethno-national conflict through power-sharing. Exploring the roles played by Syria, Qatar, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United States and France, it argues that external actors in the Lebanese conflict largely determined whether power-sharing was successfully established and shows that the consociational democratic model cannot provide long-term conflict regulation in their absence. The author argues that relationships between internal and external actors determine the prospects for successful conflict regulation and pinpoints the crucial role of the external forces in the creation of power-sharing agreements in Lebanon concluding that future success is dependent on the maintenance of positive, exogenous pressures. This book will be of key interest to students and scholars studying politics, international relations, and Middle East studies.

This was the scene of Palestinian guerrilla warfare in the 1960s and '70s and of Hezbollah confrontations with Israel from 2000 to the 2006 war. Book excerpt: Regarding the prerequisites of forgiveness, I argued that what is needed in a post-conflict society where war has long ended is not a shared agreement on the events of the past, nor a strategy of invasive truth?telling, but rather a midway approach where there is acknowledgement of past crimes and the ability of the Lebanese to be involved in public discussion of the civil war. Public apologies need at minimum to acknowledge crimes, take responsibility for them and express remorse. Public apologies made to this date, do not fulfill these requirements and as such do not promote forgiveness. Furthermore, I find that compensation is not necessary unless demanded by the victim. My survey results confirmed earlier findings regarding the positive relationship between collective guilt acceptance, intersectarian contact and intersectarian forgiveness as well as the negative relationship between forgiveness, and sectarian identification and religiosity. However, I was unable to establish any correlation between victimization and forgiveness.
