Book excerpt: You've heard his name--now read his classic spiritual autobiography. Here is St. Augustine's Confessions, an important and powerful book abridged and updated for today's reader. Written some sixteen hundred years ago, this Christian classic still speaks to readers, addressing concerns that trouble the human heart today just as they did in the fourth and fifth centuries. Confessions gives an account of God's grace in Augustine's life--as well as his personal regret over the wickedness of his pre-Christian days. It's a powerful introduction to a giant of the faith, and an encouraging story of God's power to change people.

Sample Book Insights: #1 To praise you is the desire of man, a little piece of your creation. Yet, to praise you is the desire of man because you have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you. #2 I ask who I am. I am God who is Lord. I am most high, utterly good, utterly powerful, most omnipotent, most merciful and just. I am deeply hidden yet most intimately present. I am the perfection of both beauty and strength, and I am always active, always in repose. #3 I do not know where I came from, and I do not remember how I lived before I was born. I was welcomed by the consolations of human milk, and I did not wish for more than they were giving me. #4 I was like an infant, crying and throwing my limbs about. I was not understood, and when I did not get my way, I was angry with my seniors for their disobedience and with free people who were not slaves to my interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confessions of Saint Augustine is considered one of the greatest Christian classics of all time. It is an extended poetic, passionate, intimate prayer that Augustine wrote as an autobiography sometime after his conversion, to confess his sins and proclaim God's goodness. Just as his first hearers were captivated by his powerful conversion story, so also have many millions been over the following sixteen centuries. His experience of God speaks to us across time with little need of transpositions. This acclaimed new translation by Sister Maria Boulding, O.S.B., masterfully captures his experience, and is written in an elegant and flowing style. Her beautiful contemporary translation of the ancient Confessions makes the classic work more accessible to modern readers. Her translation combines the linguistic accuracy demanded by 4th-century Latin with the poetic power aimed at by Augustine, not as discernable in previous translations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessions of St. Augustine Aurelius Augustinus, better known as Saint Augustine, was born of poor parents in the small town of Thagaste in Numidia, North Africa, A.D. 354.His father, Patricius, a pagan of somewhat loose life, was converted to Christianity before his death; his mother Monnica, on account of her personal piety and her influence on her son, is one of the most revered women in the history of the Christian Church. Augustine was educated at the University of Carthage, and according to his own account belonged to a fast set and joined in their dissipations. While there he entered into a relation which lasted for fourteen years with a young woman who became the mother of his son Adeodatus; and he joined the heretical sect of the Manichaeans, who professed to have received from their founder, Manes, a higher form of truth than that taught by Christ. At the close of his university career, which had been brilliant in spite of distractions, he returned to his native town, and first there, and later in Carthage and Rome, he practised as a teacher of rhetoric, training young lawyers in the art of pleading. By the time he was about twenty-seven he had begun to have doubts as to the validity of Manichaeism, but it was not till 387, while he was Professor of Rhetoric in the University of Milan, that he was converted to Catholic Christianity, and received baptism. He now gave up his profession and became an ascetic, studying the foundations of the faith, writing, chiefly against his former sect, and conversing with a group of disciples, first at Rome and then in his native town. When he was on a visit to Hippo, not far from Thagaste, he was forced into the priesthood, and in 395 he became Bishop of Hippo, an office which he filled for the remaining thirty-five years of his life. Though he took a leading part in the activities of the African Church through all this time, and gradually became one of the most distinguished ecclesiastical figures in the Empire, the care of his diocese and the writing of his books formed his chief occupations. He continued to lead a life of extreme simplicity and self-denial, and in his episcopal establishment he trained a large number of disciples who became leaders in the Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books V-IX of the Confessions trace five crucial years in the life of Augustine, from his debut as a teacher of rhetoric in North Africa to his baptism as a Christian and the renunciation of a worldly career in Milan. This commentary will be invaluable for those wishing to read his story in the original Latin. Through careful glosses and notes, Augustine's Latin is made accessible to students of patristics and of classics. His extensive quotations from Scripture are translated and explained in light of the variant Bible texts and the interpretative assumptions through which he came to understand them. The unfolding of his career is set against the background of political, cultural, and religious change in the fourth century, and the art with which he created a form of narrative without precedent in earlier Latin literature is illustrated in close detail.

Book excerpt: The Confessions of Saint Augustine is considered the all time number one Christian classic. It is an extended poetic, passionate, intimate prayer. Augustine was probably forty-three when he began this endeavor. He had been a baptized Catholic for ten years, a priest for six, and a bishop for only two. His pre-baptismal life raised questions in the community. Was his conversion genuine? The first hearers were captivated, as many millions have been over the following sixteen centuries. His experience of God speaks to us across time with little need of transpositions. This new translation masterfully captures his experience. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
