Book Synopsis Gun Violence and Mental Illness by : Liza H. Gold, M.D.
Download or read book Gun Violence and Mental Illness written by Liza H. Gold, M.D. and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps never before has an objective, evidence-based review of the intersection between gun violence and mental illness been more sorely needed or more timely. Gun Violence and Mental Illness, written by a multidisciplinary roster of authors who are leaders in the fields of mental health, public health, and public policy, is a practical guide to the issues surrounding the relation between firearms deaths and mental illness. Tragic mass shootings that capture headlines reinforce the mistaken beliefs that people with mental illness are violent and responsible for much of the gun violence in the United States. This misconception stigmatizes individuals with mental illness and distracts us from the awareness that approximately 65% of all firearm deaths each year are suicides. This book is an apolitical exploration of the misperceptions and realities that attend gun violence and mental illness. The authors frame both pressing social issues as public health problems subject to a variety of interventions on individual and collective levels, including utilization of a novel perspective: evidence-based interventions focusing on assessments and indicators of dangerousness, with or without indications of mental illness. Reader-friendly, well-structured, and accessible to professional and lay audiences, the book: * Reviews the epidemiology of gun violence and its relationship to mental illness, exploring what we know about those who perpetrate mass shootings and school shootings. * Examines the current legal provisions for prohibiting access to firearms for those with mental illness and whether these provisions and new mandated reporting interventions are effective or whether they reinforce negative stereotypes associated with mental illness. * Discusses the issues raised in accessing mental health treatment in regard to diminished treatment resources, barriers to access, and involuntary commitment.* Explores novel interventions for addressing these issues from a multilevel and multidisciplinary public health perspective that does not stigmatize people with mental illness. This includes reviews of suicide risk assessment; increasing treatment engagement; legal, social, and psychiatric means of restricting access to firearms when people are in crisis; and, when appropriate, restoration of firearm rights. Mental health clinicians and trainees will especially appreciate the risk assessment strategies presented here, and mental health, public health, and public policy researchers will find Gun Violence and Mental Illness a thoughtful and thought-provoking volume that eschews sensationalism and embraces serious scholarship.

Book Synopsis Violence in Psychiatry by : Katherine D. Warburton
Download or read book Violence in Psychiatry written by Katherine D. Warburton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The association between violence and mental illness is well studied, yet remains highly controversial. Currently, there does appear to be a trend of increasing violence in hospital settings, including both civilly and forensically committed populations. In fact, physical aggression is the primary reason for admission to many hospitals. Given that violence is now often both a reason for admission and a barrier to discharge, there is a pressing need for violence to be re-conceptualized as a primary medical condition, not as the by-product of one. Furthermore, treatment settings need to be enhanced to address the new types of violence exhibited in inpatient environments and this modification needs to be geared toward balancing safety with treatment. This book focuses on violence from assessment, through underlying neurobiology, to treatment and other recommendations for practice. This will be of interest to forensic psychiatrists, general adult psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, psychologists, psychiatric social workers and rehabilitation therapists.

Book Synopsis Artificial General Intelligence 2008 by : P. Wang
Download or read book Artificial General Intelligence 2008 written by P. Wang and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008-02-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was initially directly aimed at the construction of ‘thinking machines’ – that is, computer systems with human-like general intelligence. But this task proved more difficult than expected. As the years passed, AI researchers gradually shifted focus to producing AI systems that intelligently approached specific tasks in relatively narrow domains. In recent years, however, more and more AI researchers have recognized the necessity – and the feasibility – of returning to the original goal of the field. Increasingly, there is a call to focus less on highly specialized ‘narrow AI’ problem solving systems, and more on confronting the difficult issues involved in creating ‘human-level intelligence’, and ultimately general intelligence that goes beyond the human level in various ways. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), as this renewed focus has come to be called, attempts to study and reproduce intelligence as a whole in a domain independent way. Encouraged by the recent success of several smaller-scale AGI-related meetings and special tracks at conferences, the initiative to organize the very first international conference on AGI was taken, with the goal to give researchers in the field an opportunity to present relevant research results and to exchange ideas on topics of common interest. In this collection you will find the conference papers: full-length papers, short position statements and also the papers presented in the post conference workshop on the sociocultural, ethical and futurological implications of AGI.

Book Synopsis How to Mutate and Take Over the World by : R. U. Sirius
Download or read book How to Mutate and Take Over the World written by R. U. Sirius and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR AN EXPLODED POST-NOVEL This is not a novel. Don't think you can just hold your nose and jump into this. You might get boiled or vaporized. Anodized. THIS IS NOT A NOVEL Before you start reading an exploded post-novel, you should think strategy. While we do recommend reading this book from front to back--left to right--you can skip around as you please. It is disguised as a scrapbook. You can channelsurf it. Or graze through sections, munch munch munch. After you acquire the taste, you'll feel strong enough to start at the beginning and read through to the end, in precisely that order. Don't take too much at one sitting. Do not overdose. It's dense, fast. Things get technical. There's a relentless quality to the first-person narrative that may exhaust you secondhand. Read only until the vertigo overwhelms you. When you find yourself crying out, "For god's sake, give it a break!!!." . . well, exactly. Put the book down. . . gently. Rest. Watch TV. Read Ben Is Dead. Go somewhere watery and lie in the hard radiation. Read a nonexploded novel. Take up crime. Then. . . Read a little at a time. Swallow it slowly like creme br-lee. Or hold it in your cheek like Copenhagen Smokeless. But do not rush. If you go slowly enough, by the time you're done, the made-for-TV movie will be out. Starring Steven Seagal as R. U. Sirius and Whoopi Goldberg as St. Jude.
Book Synopsis The Q-sort in Character Appraisal by : Jack Block
Download or read book The Q-sort in Character Appraisal written by Jack Block and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For over half a century, the Q-sort procedure has been fruitfully used to quantitatively and systematically characterize individual personalities in a variety of clinical and other settings. Through the years, the technique has been greatly enhanced by subsequent conceptual and methodological developments and has gained wide currency in a host of appraisal settings. In this long-awaited expansion of his classic 1961 monograph, Jack Block traces the history, rationale, and productive ramifications of the Q-sort technique, as implemented by the long-established California Q-sort. Major versions of the Q-sort currently in use are included, complete with detailed instructions, empirically based savvy, and descriptive "prototypes" especially apt for the individual sorter's reference frame. Clinical and personality psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and graduate students will find this book to be the definitive work on an important and underused personality assessment tool"--Jacket. Book Synopsis Universal Artificial Intelligence by : Marcus Hutter
Download or read book Universal Artificial Intelligence written by Marcus Hutter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal motivation. The dream of creating artificial devices that reach or outperform human inteUigence is an old one. It is also one of the dreams of my youth, which have never left me. What makes this challenge so interesting? A solution would have enormous implications on our society, and there are reasons to believe that the AI problem can be solved in my expected lifetime. So, it's worth sticking to it for a lifetime, even if it takes 30 years or so to reap the benefits. The AI problem. The science of artificial intelligence (AI) may be defined as the construction of intelligent systems and their analysis. A natural definition of a system is anything that has an input and an output stream. Intelligence is more complicated. It can have many faces like creativity, solving prob lems, pattern recognition, classification, learning, induction, deduction, build ing analogies, optimization, surviving in an environment, language processing, and knowledge. A formal definition incorporating every aspect of intelligence, however, seems difficult. Most, if not all known facets of intelligence can be formulated as goal driven or, more precisely, as maximizing some utility func tion. It is, therefore, sufficient to study goal-driven AI; e. g. the (biological) goal of animals and humans is to survive and spread. The goal of AI systems should be to be useful to humans.
