Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described in 1986 as "a living legend," Glenn Hoffman was one of the world's foremost authorities on the parasites of fishes. This books narrates his life and 65-year professional career as a scientist, researcher, ambassador, colleague, and family man. Born in 1918 to "hard working Iowa farm folks," Dr. Hoffman grew up trapping and fishing for fun and profit. At the University of Iowa, he majored in zoology and worked for the Iowa State Conservation Department. From 1942 through 1946, he served in the U.S. Army as a lab technician, bacteriologist, and parasitologist in France, England, Germany, and Belgium. He returned to Iowa to earn his PhD in 1950, and taught at the University of North Dakota 19501957. From 1958 to 1975 he worked at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services Eastern Fish Disease Laboratory in Leestown, WV, and then at the U.S. Fish Culture Station in Stuttgart, Arkansas, until his retirement in 1985. He was the author of four major books and more than 100 articles on the causes, spread, and cures of parasite-related diseases in fish, including Parasites of North American Freshwater Fishes (1967, 2nd ed. 1999), called "the bible of American fish parasitology." His work and his generosity in collaboration developed an international following, and he made many trips abroad to share his expertise and receive the honors earned from his wide-ranging research and publication work. Personal, insightful, and reflective, this autobiography gives a glimpse inside the mind of a American scientist of the first rank.

"I love my husband but there is stuff in this book that is disgraceful and should never have been written!" - Alene Scoblete, wife "Francis Scoblete has been a major sinner ever since he came to elementary school. I watched him closely at the dances." - Sister Jerome Blake, in charge of making sure girls and boys slow danced a foot apart. "I don't know why Jewish kids went to a Catholic school but I'm proud they did well in religion." - Chief Rabbi Sol Bernstein "I believe that you should love your neighbor as yourself. Luckily, Frank lives in another town and is not my neighbor." - Jesus Christ "Scoblete says I have no sense of humor. I will afflict him with boils and sores over his whole body, just like I did Job." - God "Frank Scoblete has been wayward for over six decades. He's my main man!" - Satan

Book Synopsis The Confessions of Al Capone by : Loren D. Estleman
Download or read book The Confessions of Al Capone written by Loren D. Estleman and published by Forge Books. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple award-winner Loren D. Estleman has produced a major biographical novel on the infamous Mobster known as Scarface, rigorously researched and deftly nuanced to offer an intimate portrait of the gangster whose terrible crimes and larger-than-life persona have both fascinated and appalled the world for nearly a century; whose legacy is still widely debated; and whose brutally ambitious career in the Mafia continues to inspire filmmakers and writers to plumb its excesses and its contradictions. In 1944, after Al Capone has been released from prison, J. Edgar Hoover assigns an FBI junior agent to insinuate himself into Capone's life and gain his trust so that Hoover can nail as many of Capone's Mob confederates as possible. Capone, suffering from the neurological effects of syphilis, is alternately lucid, full of the passion and energy that fueled his rise to the pinnacle of American crime...and rambling or ranting, the broken shell of a man released from prison so he could die at home with his family. With the superb narrative gifts honed in dozens of novels, Estleman has captured the essence of this American icon as never before. With subtly nuanced portrayals of those in Capone's circle—his underrated wife Mae Capone, members of the Chicago Outfit including the deadly Frank Nitti—as well as his nemesis, J. Edgar Hoover, Hoover's secretary Helen Gandy and others, The Confessions of Al Capone is a major literary achievement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1830s, when a brave and curious girl named Elizabeth Blackwell was growing up, women were supposed to be wives and mothers. Some women could be teachers or seamstresses, but career options were few. Certainly no women were doctors. But Elizabeth refused to accept the common beliefs that women weren't smart enough to be doctors, or that they were too weak for such hard work. And she would not take no for an answer. Although she faced much opposition, she worked hard and finally—when she graduated from medical school and went on to have a brilliant career—proved her detractors wrong. This inspiring story of the first female doctor shows how one strong-willed woman opened the doors for all the female doctors to come. Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors? by Tanya Lee Stone is an NPR Best Book of 2013 This title has common core connections.
