Book Synopsis Biology of Antarctic Fish by : Guido di Prisco
Download or read book Biology of Antarctic Fish written by Guido di Prisco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Antarctic Fish presents the most recent findings on the biology of fish in the unique environment of the Antarctic ocean. At present the year-round temperature of the coastal waters is very near -1,87 ° C, the equilibrium temperature of the ice-seawater mixture. This extremely low temperature affects different levels of organization of fish life: individuals, organ systems, cells, organelles, membranes, and molecules. Exploring ecology, evolution, and life history as well as physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of Antarctic fish the book describes the mechanisms of cold adaptation at all these levels. It provides material for discussion also for fundamental questions in the field of adaptation to an extreme environment and therefore is of particular interest not only to specialized scientists, but also to those involved in basic and evolutionary biology.
Book Synopsis Human Hemoglobins by : Howard Franklin Bunn
Download or read book Human Hemoglobins written by Howard Franklin Bunn and published by W.B. Saunders Company. This book was released on 1977 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of the era of molecular biology, hemoglobin has been subjected to more scrutiny than any other protein, and Bunn, Forget, and Ranney can each lay claim to major contributions to the saga of hemoglobin. Their well-organized, comprehensive, and superbly illustrated work is an excellent review of the abnormal hemoglobin field. Early chapters deal with the structure and function of human hemoglobin and the way in which this is modified in various disease states. Later sections deal with the various structural hemoglobin variants and their associated clinical manifestations, the thalassaemias, and the acquired disorders of hemoglobin. The sections that deal with the modification of hemoglobin function in various disease states are particularly good. The book contains an extensive and up-to-date bibliography and is remarkably free from errors of fact or type--the best standard of reference on the subject as of the year 1977.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Download or read book The Blood of Sheep written by M.H. Blunt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to bring together in one volume some of the more recent knowledge of the cellular and biochemical constit uents of sheep's blood. Limitations of the space available have precluded a complete discus sion, but a number of good reviews have been published within the last few years on certain specific aspects and these have been referred to in the extensive bibliography. There is inevitably some overlap in the material discussed arising from duplication of interest and from the close association of the subject matter. The authors were asked to discuss normal values and the changes brought about in these by physiological stresses, particularly those imposed by pregnancy, age, lactation, and changing nutrition. In some cases, where it was considered suJtable, the response to certain pathological conditions have also been discussed. It is hoped that the monograph will be of value to those using sheep in comparative research into veterinary and human medicine as well as to students of ruminant physiology. Book Synopsis Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders by : Sa A. Wang
Download or read book Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders written by Sa A. Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms that initially present as peripheral blood abnormalities, with either cytopenias or elevated peripheral blood counts, as well as non-neoplastic conditions that may raise concern for a hematologic malignancy. The scope of the book includes myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), mixed myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), as well as lymphomas and lymphoid leukemias that typically present initially with peripheral blood abnormalities. Within each category, a comprehensive list of differential diagnoses is discussed. For each disease entity, the reader is updated with new molecular genetic data, biomarkers, and recent applications of immunophenotyping, and how to incorporate the new information in disease diagnosis and classifications is illustrated, including the use of diagnostic algorithms where appropriate. The book employs the revised WHO Classification of Hematopoietic Neoplasms for all disease entities. Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders will serve as a very useful resource for pathologists, pathologists in training, hematologists and medical technologists who are involved in the clinical work-up of patients with bone marrow and blood neoplasms. It will provide a practical and concise yet comprehensive review.
Book Synopsis Assessing Genetic Risks by : Institute of Medicine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising hopes for disease treatment and prevention, but also the specter of discrimination and "designer genes," genetic testing is potentially one of the most socially explosive developments of our time. This book presents a current assessment of this rapidly evolving field, offering principles for actions and research and recommendations on key issues in genetic testing and screening. Advantages of early genetic knowledge are balanced with issues associated with such knowledge: availability of treatment, privacy and discrimination, personal decision-making, public health objectives, cost, and more. Among the important issues covered: Quality control in genetic testing. Appropriate roles for public agencies, private health practitioners, and laboratories. Value-neutral education and counseling for persons considering testing. Use of test results in insurance, employment, and other settings.

Book Synopsis Biology of Blood-Sucking Insects by : Mike Lehane
Download or read book Biology of Blood-Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.
