Book excerpt: Young urban African American women are at disproportionately high risk for HIV/STIs and current interventions focusing on individual factors (e.g., condom use self-efficacy) have not been sufficient to address this risk. Recent research suggests that an ecological approach that takes into account broader social and relationship factors may be more effective in meeting the needs of this population. The present study examined several relationship-level factors, including relationship power, avoidance motives for sex, and relationship commitment, and their potential interaction with the individual-level factor of condom use self-efficacy in predicting sexual risk-taking behaviors in a community sample of African American women aged 18-25 (N =132). The current study additionally considered the role of young women's ambivalence around condom use, through descriptive analyses. Out of the three relationship variables, only relationship power was found to interact with condom use self-efficacy to predict sexual risk. In addition, although not specifically hypothesized, relationship commitment predicted condom use over and above the variance accounted for by condom use self-efficacy, suggesting that relationship commitment may be particularly important in determining condom use for this population. Further, participants expressed ambivalence about condom use during their last protected and unprotected sexual encounters, suggesting that women do not always want to use condoms. Discussion of the results highlights the importance of considering relationship factors and ambivalence toward condom use in sexual risk-taking among young urban African American women. Limitations and implications for prevention programming are considered.

Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted diseases have reached epidemic proportions, especially among African Americans. However, African American women have emerged as being one of the hardest hit groups by the most fatal of sexually transmitted diseases - the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Although there has been much speculation regarding contributing risk factors specific to this group, previous research has focused mostly on low-income, uneducated or drug-addicted individuals. Still, these factors do not account for the infection rates among educated, non-addicted and financially stable women. In this study, psychological variables of self-efficacy and locus of control were explored study as potential risk factors in sexual decision making for African American women enrolled at two Midwestern universities. Locus of control was a significant predictor of normative beliefs regarding safer sex practices, while self-efficacy was not found to be a significant predictor for sexual decision-making. However, there was a significant interaction between self-efficacy and locus of control in relation to participants' intentions to practice safer sex. The results and implications for counseling, counselor education, research and prevention are discussed.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American college students at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) are disproportionally at risk for experiencing negative sexual health outcomes. African Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 are disproportionally affected by unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, which are associated with risky sexual behaviors, including sex without a condom. The risks and stress associated with living at the intersection of both African American risk factors and college risk factors may play a role in the sexual behavior of African American college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the determinants of condom use among African American undergraduates at predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). This study used the constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine the factors that contribute to condom use. An added factor the study examined was the relationship between different types of stress and condom use. The relationship between stress, intention to use condoms, and actual condom use was also investigated. The study employed a cross-sectional design and used surveys to collect data on African American college students between the ages of 18 and 24 years old at PWIs. The survey was disseminated through Qualtrics online survey software. The sample of 202 students engaged in a range of sexual behaviors (vaginal, oral, and anal sex) and had inconsistent condom use during these activities. The study found that constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior, namely intentions and attitudes, were independently significant at predicting condom use. However, the interaction between intentions and overall stress was more significant in predicting condom use among African American college students attending PWIs over the past 30 days. The study findings have promising implications for health education practitioners, university stakeholders, and researchers who are interested in reducing sexual health disparities. Coordinated efforts are needed to reduce the risk factors that contribute to unsafe sexual behaviors among college students, especially among those at greater risk such as African American college students at PWIs.

Book excerpt: This study examined the differences in self-efficacy of the participants and investigated the relationships found between self-efficacy and reported condom use. Participants were randomly assigned to either an HIV/AIDS safer sex class or a health promotion class. No significant differences in self-efficacy were found between the two groups. However, female participants were found to have higher self-efficacy than male participants. Reported sexual activity was low for this population, so no significant findings were discovered between self-efficacy and condom use.

Book excerpt: "Health disparities research has indicated that urban, low-income African-American adolescents experience ecological and contextual factors like community violence, socioeconomic status, and limited sexual health knowledge which contribute to high rates of sexual risk among urban African American adolescents. However, protective factors like parental monitoring and parent-adolescent communication about sex may decrease sexual risk among this urban teen population. A sample of 1,102 African American adolescents aged 13-17 from urban Midwestern high schools were included in this study. The current study hypothesized that: (1) parent-adolescent communication about sex would be positively associated with adolescent sexual health knowledge, (2) there would be a significant negative association between parental monitoring and adolescent sexual risk, (3) both parental monitoring and parent-adolescent communication about sex would be negatively associated with adolescent sexual risk and (4) there would be gender differences in parental monitoring, (5) and parent-adolescent communication about sex. Results indicated no significant association between sexual health knowledge and parent-adolescent communication about sex or parental monitoring. Findings indicated a significant negative association between parental monitoring and adolescent sexual risk, with the association being stronger for boys than girls. There was a significant negative association between sexual health knowledge and adolescent sexual risk. Implications suggest that parental monitoring has greater influence on sexual risk in African American adolescents and thus, is more of a protective factor than parent-adolescent communication about sex."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Inconsistency in the sexual risk prevention literature indicated that there was a need for additional research identifying factors that will increase safe sex behaviors; particularly, condom use, in young adults. The present study attempted to expand the sexual risk prevention literature by examining the impact of different safe sex advertisements and biological sex on the condom use attitudes, condom use intentions, condom use self-efficacy, negative and positive emotional responses of young adults as well as explore the influence of negative and positive emotional responses on the condom use attitudes, condom use intentions, and condom use self-efficacy of young adults. Five hypotheses were examined using a sample of 203 young adults. MANOVA and regression analyses were conducted to examine the study hypotheses. There was partial support for Hypotheses 1 and 3; indicating that female participants reported more positive condom use attitudes than male participants, participants in the negative emotional advertisement and positive emotional advertisement groups reported more positive condom use attitudes than those in the rational advertisement group, and that the negative emotion of guilt was related to condom use attitudes. Hypotheses 2, 4, and 5 were not upheld. Overall, the present study results provide some support for the influence of biological sex, advertisement type, and guilt on the condom use attitudes of young adults. The need to explore different safe sex advertisement formats and more diverse samples of young adults was discussed, including implications and recommendations for future research.
