Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Bridges and Culverts Bridge building in the United States is of comparatively recent accomplishment. The early settlers were compelled to ford the streams or cross them on rafts or in dugouts. When Washington crossed the Delaware with his army, there were no bridges over that river, and history records many instances of streams being forded with untold hardship and the consequent disasters and delays. Such incidents become serious matters when, for example, physicians are unable to reach the sick or injured because Of impassable fords or are compelled to expose themselves to unnecessary danger. Traffic conditions in general are demoralized by unsafe bridges or culverts. Pontoon bridges have served temporary needs in many instances, but especially in warfare. Mention is made Of their use very early in history, and one Of the most notable occasions was when the Per sian army under Xerxes crossed the Hellespont on two pontoon bridges consisting, one of 360 vessels and the other of 314. These were anchored head and stern alongside each other, with their keels in the direction of the current. The Romans had wickerwork vessels covered with hides destined to support the timber platforms of a bridge. These formed a part of the train Of their armies throughout the history of the Empire until 476 A. D. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railroad Bridges The existing and the accepted types of bridges in use to-day on American railroads being the results of a true evolution, no attempt to present them intelligently would be complete without a brief sketch of the past history of bridge; in America. The rapid development of the new world and the enormous number of bridges that has been built within the limits of the nineteenth century, have furnished us with a wide experience, from which we have been able to select the good and reject much that was bad or undesirable. The pioneer life, not only of the earlier settlers, but of each genera tion to the present day, has developed to a high degree the energies, ingenuity and self-reliance of the American people. These pioneers were compelled to be men of all trades. Their limited resources and the lack of time or opportunity to seek for past precedents, impelled them to solve each problem anew. They, thought with vigor and were not fettered with the trammels of science, before they were capable of ex erting their mental faculties to advantage, as Sir Joseph Banks wrote to Thomas Paine in 1788.[from transactions or american society or CIVIL engineers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete in Highway Construction: A Text-Book for Highway Engineers and Supervisors The development of manufacture and of agriculture, which require proper transportation facilities not only on the railroads but to the points of ship ment and distribution, has stimulated a widespread interest and called national attention to the necessity for better pavements and for highway constructions of a more permanent and durable character. This demand, as well as the necessity for reducing the expense of repairs incident to automobile traffic, has brought to the forefront the use of concrete to produce permanent construction, not only for sidewalks and pavements, but for highway structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and the many smaller details, the repairs to which are continually vexing the City and Town Engineer and the Highway Commissioner. The purpose of the present volume, then, is to present to those in charge of street and highway construction and maintenance, examples of work which have been satisfactorily performed, and, further, to give drawings and designs made especially for The atlas Portland Cement Company, either as reproductions of existing structures, from drawings and photographs kindly furnished by the local authorities, or as original designs prepared by expert engineers at the request of the atlas Portland Cement Company.
