Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book is a comprehensive examination of John Cage's seminal Concert for Piano and Orchestra. It places the piece into its many contexts, examining its relationship with Cage's compositional practice of indeterminacy more generally, the importance of Cage's teacher, Arnold Schoenberg, on the development of his structural thought, and the impact of Cage's (mis)understanding of jazz. It discusses, on the basis of Cage's sketches and manuscripts, the compositional process at play in the piece. It details the circumstances of the piece's early performances-often described as catastrophes-its recording and promotion, and the part it played in Cage's (successful) hunt for a publisher. It examines in detail the various ways in which Cage's pianist of choice, David Tudor, approached the piece, differing according to whether it was to be performed with an orchestra, alongside Cage delivering the lecture, 'Indeterminacy', or as a piano solo to accompany Merce Cunningham's choreography Antic Meet. It demonstrates the ways in which, despite indeterminacy, the instrumental parts of the piece are amenable to analytical interpretation, especially through a method which exposes the way in which those parts form a sort of network of statistical commonality and difference, analysing, too, the pianist's part, the Solo for Piano, on a similar basis, discussing throughout the practical consequences of Cage's notations for a performer. It shows the way in which the piece played a central role, first, in the construction of who Cage was and what sort of composer he was within the new musical world but, second, how it came to be an important example for professional philosophers in discussing what the limits of the musical work are"--

Book excerpt: Considered two of Mozart's most important, far-reaching, and richly inventive piano concertos, the D minor, K466, and the C major, K467, represent the composer at his creative peak. Never before had Mozart so intensely explored the concerto form with its inherent struggle of one individual voice against many. And yet the two works are very different the D minor, tragic and intense; the C major, majestic and grand. Both are published here in full score with bar-numbered movements. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of William Phemister’s The American Piano Concerto Compendium reveals to professional and amateurs pianists alike a vast collection of available compositions by American composers. Analysis expands outside mainstream concerto styles to include those considered experimental or popular derivatives. The range of music flows from Pulitzer Prize winners like Samuel Barber, Gail Kubik, and John LaMontaine, to lesser-known multi-ethnic composers such as Tania León and Samuel Zyman, to old standards like Edward MacDowell and the first piano concerto written by an American-born composer, Otis B. Boise (1875), to the cutting-edge avant-garde of Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter, just to name a few. These all contribute to the varied narrative that animates American piano music. With forty percent more works described, documented, and reviewed than were listed in the 1985 first edition from the College Music Society, this second edition is a valuable resource not only for pianists and conductors, but also for orchestras, teachers, students, music historians and critics, collectors, and concert attendees.

Book excerpt: The very lively three-movement Piano Concerto in G major is characterised, with regard to style, by jazz influences, especially in the first and third movements, but by late Romantic and impressionist influences in the middle movement. Ravel himself called it 'a concerto in the truest sense of this generic term: With that, I want to say that it has been written in the spirit of the concertos by Mozart and Saint-Saëns.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most concertos are difficult, and opportunities to play these great works with orchestra are very rare. Intermediate pianists can now experience the excitement and beauty of performing themes from nine favorite piano concertos, at their own level, with orchestral accompaniments on the available General MIDI disk (Alfred item 18215). The varied styles of Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Schumann and Tchaikovsky are respectfully represented in arrangements that beautifully get to the "heart" of each concerto.
