Book excerpt: Piano Concerto No. 3 "Maryland Concerto" is dedicated to the composer's dear friend, Janice M. Puckett. She convinced him to write piano concertos for students of all levels, and these became part of the repertoire list of The Greater Laurel MTA Concerto Competition. After conducting a Piano Olympics with Jan's students in 2006, Alexander Peskanov was driving home to New York taking the famous route, I-95. As he was approaching Ft. McHenry tunnel, Peskanov suddenly heard a very joyous and captivating theme. He thought about Jan and her daughter, Joy. By the time he came out of the tunnel, the first movement was almost complete. The long drive ahead provided the time and inspiration to begin work on the 2nd and 3rd movements. When Peskanov returned home, he immediately rushed to the piano and played through the entire concerto. That six-hour drive was the conception of a valuable contribution to children's piano concerto repertoire.
