Book Synopsis Spanish Sentence Builders - A Lexicogrammar Approach by : Dylan Viñales
Download or read book Spanish Sentence Builders - A Lexicogrammar Approach written by Dylan Viñales and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the newly updated SECOND EDITION! This version has been fully re-checked for accuracy and re-formatted to make it even more user-friendly, following feedback after a full year of classroom use by thousands of teachers across the world. Spanish Sentence Builders is a workbook aimed at beginner to pre-intermediate students co-authored by two modern languages educators with over 40 years of extensive classroom experience between the two, both in the UK and internationally. This 'no-frills' book contains 19 units of work on very popular themes, jam-packed with graded vocabulary-building, reading, translation, retrieval practice and writing activities. Key vocabulary, lexical patterns and structures are recycled and interleaved throughout. Each unit includes: 1) A sentence builder modelling the target constructions; 2) A set of vocabulary building activities; 3) A set of narrow reading texts exploited through a range of tasks focusing on both the meaning and structural levels of the text; 4) A set of retrieval-practice translation tasks; 5) A set of writing tasks targeting essential micro-skills such as spelling, lexical retrieval, syntax, editing and communication of meaning. Based on the Extensive Processing Instruction (E.P.I.) principle that learners learn best from comprehensible and highly patterned input flooded with the target linguistic features, the authors have carefully designed each and every text and activity to enable the student to process and produce each item many times over. This occurs throughout each unit of work as well as in smaller grammar, vocabulary and question-skills micro-units located at regular intervals in the book, which aim at reinforcing the understanding and retention of the target grammar, vocabulary and question patterns.
Book Synopsis The Structure of Complementation by : Antonio Carlos Quicoli
Download or read book The Structure of Complementation written by Antonio Carlos Quicoli and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of complementation has received considerable attention in generative studies. Following Rosenbaum's (1967) pioneering study of the English complement system, there are extensive studies by Lakoff (1965), Ross (1967), Perlmutter (1971) and a large number of publications. More recent detailed studies are Emonds (1970) and Bresnan (1972) . These studies have increased enormously the body of factual knowledge about the complement system of English, and about the phenomenon of complementation in general. As a consequence there are a number of empirical hypotheses about the structure of human languages which must now be tested against facts of different languages. Of these hypotheses, perhaps the most interesting is that the grammars of all languages make use of the principle of the transformational cycle. Testing this hypothesis constitutes one of the main concerns of the present book. Furthermore, these studies have also raised numerous interesting empirical issues of great importance for linguistic theory, most of which are still awaiting fresh evidence from different languages in order to be settled. This study is directed towards resolving some of these issues by adducing relevent data, primarily from Portuguese.

Book excerpt: An engaging and relatable examination of how we perceive and interpret the world around us The study of human cognitive processes provides insight into why we act or react the way we do. Understanding cognition can help us understand ourselves and others and can even allow us to make educated predictions about future behaviors. In Cognition, 11th Edition, author Thomas Farmer updates this classic text with the latest advances in the field and more in-depth coverage of prominent topics. Expanded and refined throughout, this edition retains the breadth of scope and depth of detail that has made it the go-to text on the topic. Cognition emphasizes the link between conceptual cognitive psychology and real-world experience: case studies, current trends, and historical perspectives merge to provide a comprehensive understanding of core principles and theories. Discusses behavioral measures and overviews classical behaviorist paradigms Extends the discussions of sensory transduction, procedural memory, and more Clarifies theories of attention and the distinction between controlled vs. automatic processing Includes self quizzes at the end of each chapter, plus updates to all chapters with new and revised content New to the 11th Edition: On average, each chapter includes three or four major points of revision aimed either at better explaining a particular process or theory or at bring the examination of cognitive processes up-to-date with current science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilgrim in the Palace of Words is about language, about the words that splash and chatter across our tongues. Some six thousand languages are still spoken on the planet, and author Glenn Dixon – an expert is socio-linguistics and a tireless adventurer – travels to the Earth's four corners to explore the way these languages create and mould societies. As one philosopher said, languages are Houses of Being. After doing graduate work in linguistics, Dixon wanted to visit these houses or "palaces" himself – to stroll along their sidewalks, knock on their doors, and peek in their windows. He wanted to see what they were hiding in their basements ... even if it meant a little bit of trouble. In some cases, a whole lot of trouble! Join him on his adventure as, with wit and humour, he works toward a real understanding of how and why we communicate the way we do in the Global Village.
