Book excerpt: This study presents an systematic approach to water quality assessment, hybrid modelling and decision support for eutrophication management in deep reservoirs. It is found that during the summer monsoon the catchment runoff into the Yongdam reservoir induces a transfer of pollutants from a middle stratified layer to the surface layer. Although the

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Simulation in Ecology, Volume III, and its companion, Volume IV, grew out of a symposium, Modeling and Analysis of Ecosystems, held at the University of Georgia, 1-3 March 1973. The purposes of the meeting were to (i) review the status of ecosystem modeling, simulation, and analysis; (ii) provide a forum for interaction between U.S. International Biological Program (IBP) Biome modeling programs and selected non-IBP investigations involving systems approaches to ecosystem analysis; and (iii) identify and promote dialogue on key issues in macrosystem modeling. The volume is organized into two parts. Part I treats ecosystem modeling in the U.S. IBP. The introductory chapter is followed by five chapters describing grassland, deciduous forest, desert, tundra, and coniferous forest biome modeling. The concluding chapter is one of critique and evaluation. Part II is devoted mainly to freshwater ecosystems, grading into the estuarine system in the last chapter. The five chapters of this section encompass a simple thermal ecosystem, small woodland streams, a reservoir, one of the Great Lakes, a lake reclaimed from eutrophication, and a major estuary under stress of human impact.

Book excerpt: In the late 1970s. the adverse effects of man-made eutrophication became manifest in many countries. which explains. perhaps. why there was such a broad interest when the former Resources and Environment Area of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) organized a workshop on the subject. There was such an enthusiasm among the partici pants that two further workshops were quickly organized. one on deep and the other on shallow lake eutrophication problems. The organization of these meetings was extremely stimulating. and the round table discussions among scientists from both West and East remain thought provoking for those who took part. The general feeling emerged that the complexity and multifaceted nature of the problem, even though perhaps not fully recognized at that time. clearly demanded a systems analysis approach. No wonder. then. that the request made by the Hungarian Member Organization of nASA to adopt Lake Balaton as a "real life laboratory" for an nASA case study fell on fertile ground. the more so since it appeared that shallow lake eutrophication had received less attention and was less well understood than that of deep lakes. And so the nASA Lake Balaton Case Study began. with the appointment of Gerrit van Straten as the first leader of the project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic environmental processes are complex; the easiest and most effective way to understanding them lies through the disciplines of dynamic modelling and computer simulation. The prerequisite modelling fundamentals are presented in the first chapter in a manner comprehensible to students as well as to practising scientists and engineers. The second chapter describes the many environmental processes that lend themselves to modelling, for example pollution and wastewater treatment. The third part of the book provides 65 simulation examples both on the page and on an accompanying diskette in the simulation language ISIM - the first time that this has been done with a teaching book in this field - ready-to-run on any DOS personal computer. Crucially, the simulation runs can be interrupted to allow rapid interactive parameter changes and easy plotting of results; this enables the reader to get a feel for the model and system behaviour.

Book excerpt: "Distribution and Transformation of Nutrients and Eutrophication in Large-scale Lakes and Reservoirs: The Three Gorges Reservoir" presents key findings on early eutrophication in large-scale lakes and reservoirs, providing readers with an overview of lake management problems and the tools that can be applied to solve them. The broad spectrum of available tools is presented in detail, including environmental technological methods, ecotechnological methods and the application of models to determine the best management strategy. The book is intended for environmental engineers and researchers in the fields of environmental science and ecological chemistry. Professor Zhenyao Shen, Professor Junfeng Niu and Associate Professor Ying Wang work at the School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, China. Dr. Hongyuan Wang works at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China. Dr. Xin Zhao works at Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute, China.
