Book excerpt: The limitations of conventional groundwater remediation technologies have led to the development of innovative technologies which may achieve national hazardous waste site remediation goals. Before an innovative technology can be implemented in the field, remedial project managers, regulators and other stakeholders require adequate modeling tools to help assess the applicability of the technology at a particular site. This modeling study investigates how an innovative technology, in situ cometabolic bioremediation, might be implemented to remediate a TCE-contaminated site, under different site conditions. A steady- state model is developed which couples an analytical expression to simulate the effect of flow between multiple pumping and injection wells, with an expression to calculate TCE removal as groundwater circulates through in situ bioreactors established around the injection wells. Varying site conditions and well configurations are investigated to determine their effect on the overall treatment efficiency of a system. A dual screen well design is found to be an effective method for contaminant capture and treatment given typical values of anisotropy. Investigation of a multiple row implementation concept proves it to be an effective configuration for site cleanup. The model is integrated into interactive software which serves as a technology screening tool.

Book excerpt: Groundwater and soil contamination is a significant problem throughout the nation, with approximately 300,000 to 400,000 sites affected (National Research Council, 1994). Examples of groundwater contaminants of special interest to DoD and AF installations include fuel hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and nitroaromatic compounds. Traditional remediation technologies, which include pump-and-treat, pen%permeable reactive barriers, and natural attenuation, have numerous drawbacks associated with them. These drawbacks have prompted researchers to look for innovative contamination clean- up methods. The technology investigated in this thesis, reticulating horizontal flow treatment wells (HFTWs) with in-well palladium (Pd) catalyst reactors, offers the potential for destruction of groundwater contaminants commonly found at USAF and DoD installations at less expense, more safely and effectively, and without the need to pump contaminated water to the surface, In this study, a numerical model was used to simulate application of the remediation technology under different site conditions for a number of contaminants of interest. It was found that the HFTW system with in-well Pd catalyst reactors had potential to remediate groundwater contaminants of DoD interest. Based only on this modeling study, however, it was unclear whether the technology could reduce contaminant concentrations enough to meet regulatory standards downgradient of the treatment system. Further experimental study is recommended, both in the laboratory and in the field, to quantify the efficacy of the technology in treating various contaminants of concern.

Conventional remediation technologies have shortcomings that have prompted further research into the development of novel treatment technologies. A palladium/alumina catalyst in the presence of dissolved molecular hydrogen (referred to hereafter as a Pd/H2 system) has been demonstrated to rapidly destroy chlorinated ethene contaminated groundwater. First-order kinetics have been used to model chlorinated ethene destruction in a Pd/H2 reactor. However, catalyst deactivation and regeneration are important processes that also need to be modeled in order to better understand their effect on treatment efficiency. This study presents a model for palladium catalyzed destruction of chlorinated ethenes that includes catalyst deactivation and regeneration. The model is validated using published column experiment results performed at Stanford University. The model is then coupled with an analytical groundwater flow model to simulate application of in-well Pd/H2 reactors to accomplish subsurface contaminant destruction in a Horizontal Flow Treatment Well (HFTW) system. Applying the model under realistic conditions results in approximately 130 days of system operation %without significant catalyst deactivation. This suggests catalyst deactivation may not significantly affect operating costs or system performance in a real remediation scenario. The model presented in this study, by incorporating the relevant processes of catalyst deactivation and regeneration, represents an important step in transitioning the Pd/H2 in-well system toward field application.
