Book excerpt: Numerical efficiency comparisons of a four-node finite element model (FEM), a mass-spring lattice model (MSLM), and a mass-spring-dashpot lattice model (MSDLM) are investigated. Specifically, the error in the ultrasonic phase speed with variations in Poisson's ratio and angle of incidence is evaluated in each model of an isotropic elastic solid. With regard to phase speed, materials with constant N grid spaces per P-wavelength having Poisson's ratios between 0.0 and 0.25 are modeled more accurately with the MSLM. Materials with Poisson's ratios between 0.35 and 0.5 and N grid spaces per P-wavelength are more accurately modeled with the FEM. Materials whose Poisson's ratio is between 0.25 and 0.35 are modeled equally accurately. With regard to phase speed, viscoelastic materials modeled with FEM and MSDLM show good agreement with known analytical solutions. The computational expense of all three models is also examined. The number of floating point operations (FLOPS) needed to achieve a specified phase speed accuracy is calculated for each different model. While the FEM and MSLM have nearly the same computation cost, the MSDLM is 5 times more costly than either the FEM or MSLM.

Emphasis is placed on transient wave motion problems in two- and three-dimensional unbounded and semibounded solids for which explicit results can be obtained, without resort to approximate methods of integration. The mathematical techniques used, many of which appear here in book form for the first time, will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engeneers and scientists whose specialty includes crystal acoustics, crystal optics, magnetogasdynamics, dislocation theory, seismology and fibre wound composites. My interest in the subject of anisotropic wave motion had its origin in the study of small deformations superposed on large deformations of elastic solids. By varying the initial stretch in a homogeneously deformed solid, it is possible to synthesize aniso tropic materials whose elastic parameters vary continuously. The range of the parameter variation is limited by stability considerations in the case of small deformations super posed on large deformation problems and (what is essentially the same thing) by the of hyperbolicity (solids whose parameters allow wave motion) for anisotropic notion solids. The full implication of hyperbolicity for anisotropic elastic solids has never been previously examined, and even now the constraints which it imposes on the elasticity constants have only been examined for the class of transversely isotropic (hexagonal crystals) materials.

Book excerpt: Perfectly matched layers (PML) are a well-developed method for simulating wave propagation in unbounded media enabling the use of a reduced computational domain without having to worry about spurious boundary reflections. Many PML studies have been reported for both acoustic waves in fluids and elastic waves in solids. Nevertheless, further studies are needed for improvements in the fields of formulation, stability, and inhomogeneity of PMLs. This thesis introduces new second-order time-domain PML formulations for modeling mechanical wave propagation in unbounded solid, fluid, and coupled fluid-solid media. It also addresses certain stability issues, and demonstrates application of these formulations. Using a complex coordinate stretching approach a PML for the time-domain anisotropic elastic wave equation in two dimensional space is compactly formulated with two second- order equations along with only four auxiliary equations. This makes it smaller than existing formulations, thereby simplifying the problem and reducing the computational burden. A simple method is proposed for improving the stability of the discrete PML problem for a wide range of otherwise unstable anisotropic elastic media. Specifically, the value of the scaling parameter was increased thereby moving unstable modes out of the discretely resolved range of spatial frequencies. A new second-order time-domain PML formulation for fluid-solid heterogeneous media is presented. This formulation satisfies the interface coupling boundary conditions which were chosen such that they can be readily integrated into a weak formulation of the complete fluid-solid problem and which can be used in a finite element method (FEM) analysis. Numerical FEM results are given to establish the accuracy of the formulations and to provide examples of their application. In particular, numerical examples are shown to validate the elastic wave PML formulation and to illustrate the improved stability that can be achieved with certain anisotropic media that have known issues. In addition, the effectiveness of the fluid-solid PML is numerically demonstrated for absorbing all kinds of bulk waves, as well as surface and evanescent waves. Finally, the new formulations were used to predict the transient response of a solid phononic structure consisting of a superfocusing acoustic lens.
