Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Book excerpt: Experimental programs in laboratories give real results to identify nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures but they are limited to knowledge of particular cases under restricted structural dimensions, sizes, shapes, loading and boundary conditions but the computational simulation approach has no limit to its application. Constitutive models are developed to simulate the dynamic nonlinear response of concrete and steel reinforcement subjected to cyclic loading varying randomly in magnitude. The behavior of structural concrete under monotonic loading is affected by important material aspects including cracking, crushing, tension stiffening, compression softening and bond slip. Reversed cyclic loading introduces further complexities such as stiffness degradation in concrete and the Bauschinger effect in reinforcing steel. In this research the validity and reliability of some proposed constitutive models for concrete considering general loading i.e. cyclic, monotonic, partial, common point and transition loading are evaluated. Amongst many existing constitutive models, because of their simplicity and common usage in the finite element analysis of RC structures, only some common proposed models based on nonlinear elasticity-based approach are investigated. These models are verified against experimental data available in the literature and the results are discussed. In this study, also, a hysteretic stress–strain model is developed for unconfined concrete with the intention of providing efficient modeling for the structural behavior of concrete in seismic regions. The proposed model is based on the findings of previous experimental and analytical studies. The model for concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading, comprises four components in compression and tension; an envelope curve (for monotonic and cyclic loading), an unloading curve, a reloading curve, and transition curve. Also presented are formulations for partial unloading and partial reloading curves. The proposed Constitutive model reliability is investigated by RC members non-linear finite element analysis (FEM) using by finite element software ABAQUS. Comparisons with test results showed that the proposed model provides a good fit to a wide range of experimentally established hysteresis loops.

Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks and other destructive incidents caused by explosives have, in recent years, prompted considerable research and development into the protection of structures against blast loads. For this objective to be achieved, experiments have been performed and theoretical studies carried out to improve our assessments of the intensity as well as the space-time distribution of the resulting blast pressure on the one hand and the consequences of an explosion to the exposed environment on the other. This book aims to enhance awareness on and understanding of these topical issues through a collection of relevant, Transactions of the Wessex Institute of Technology articles written by experts in the field. The book starts with an overview of key physics-based algorithms for blast and fragment environment characterisation, structural response analyses and structural assessments with reference to a terrorist attack in an urban environment and the management of its inherent uncertainties.A subsequent group of articles is concerned with the accurate definition of blast pressure, which is an essential prerequisite to the reliable assessment of the consequences of an explosion. Other papers are concerned with alternative methods for the determination of blast pressure, based on experimental measurements or neural networks. A final group of articles reports investigations on predicting the response of specific structural entities and their contents. The book concludes with studies on the effectiveness of steel-reinforced polymer in improving the performance of reinforced concrete columns and the failure mechanisms of seamless steel pipes used in nuclear industry.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Key Engineering Materials, commemorating the 90th birthday of Professor Jan Sobota, attempts to provide a flavor of the wide range of his interest in and contributions to structural mechanics and the Finite Element Method. Professor Sobota was an outstanding academic teacher, in both didactic and pedagogical fields, a highly talented research worker, incorporating both theory and engineering practice. His attitude, industriousness, and cordiality brought him a great esteem among his co-workers and a students’ community. He was a pioneer in using the Finite Element Method, Transfer Matrix Method and the Boundary Integrals Method and its numerical modification Boundary Element Method in former Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia and the Czech Republic). Therefore, selected papers in this book are dealing with modeling and analyzing of various reinforced concrete structures and its parts mainly by the FEM. Different problems of structures, e.g. design of complicated structures, defects of structures, determination of wind load on atypical structures, soil-structure interactions, thermal effects, etc.; are involved and their suitable solutions are provided to readers.

Book excerpt: The analysis and design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures against extreme loads, such as earthquakes, blasts, and impacts, has been an objective of many researchers and designers. As a result of recently elevated terror threat levels in the world, demand for the impact resistant design of buildings has increased. Numerous studies have been conducted to-date toward understanding and developing methodologies predicting the behaviour of RC structures under impact loads. However, the lack of a complete understanding of shear behaviour under high dynamic conditions hindered the efforts for accurate prediction of impact behaviour, since severe shear mechanisms may dominate the behaviour of RC structures when subjected to impact loads. This current study aimed to apply one of the more successful methods of static reinforced concrete shear analysis, the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), to the analysis of dynamic loads, and thus, develop an efficient and reliable tool for impact analysis of RC structures. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis program for reinforced concrete, VecTor2, developed previously at the University of Toronto for static loads, was modified to include the consideration of dynamic loads, including impacts. VecTor2 uses the MCFT for its computational methodology, along with a wide array of material and behavioural models for reinforced concrete. To verify the performance of VecTor2 and its computational methodology under impact loads, an experimental program was also undertaken to provide data for corroboration. Eight reinforced concrete beam specimens, four pairs, were tested under free falling drop-weights, impacting the specimens at the mid-span. All specimens had identical longitudinal reinforcement, but varying shear reinforcement ratio, intended to investigate the effects of shear capacity on the impact behaviour. A total of 20 tests were conducted, including multiple tests on each specimen. The test results showed that the shear characteristics of the specimens played an important role in their overall behaviour. All specimens, regardless of their shear capacity, developed severe diagonal shear cracks, forming a shear-plug under the impact point. The VecTor2 analyses of the test specimens were satisfactory in predicting damage levels, and maximum and residual displacements. The methodology employed by VecTor2, based on the MCFT, proved to be successful in predicting the shear-dominant behaviour of the specimens under impact.

This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers the application of numerical methods to reinforced concrete structures. To analyze reinforced concrete structures linear elastic theories are inadequate because of cracking, bond and the nonlinear and time dependent behavior of both concrete and reinforcement. These effects have to be considered for a realistic assessment of the behavior of reinforced concrete structures with respect to ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. The book gives a compact review of finite element and other numerical methods. The key to these methods is through a proper description of material behavior. Thus, the book summarizes the essential material properties of concrete and reinforcement and their interaction through bond. These basics are applied to different structural types such as bars, beams, strut and tie models, plates, slabs and shells. This includes prestressing of structures, cracking, nonlinear stressstrain relations, creeping, shrinkage and temperature changes. Appropriate methods are developed for each structural type. Large displacement and dynamic problems are treated as well as short-term quasi-static problems and long-term transient problems like creep and shrinkage. Most problems are illustrated by examples which are solved by the program package ConFem, based on the freely available Python programming language. The ConFem source code together with the problem data is available under open source rules at concrete-fem.com. The author aims to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of numerical methods for simulation of reinforced concrete structures, addressing students, teachers, researchers and designing and checking engineers.
