Book excerpt: Excerpt from Computation of the Transonic Flow About a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle A principal goal of computational transonic aerodynamics is to develop computa tional methods for the analysis of transonic flows and for the design of efficient transonic air craft. We are interested in particular in the problem of designing wings with only weak shocks at a given Mach number and angle of attack. Methods, which we shall describe below, exist for the design of shockless transonic airfoils and for computing the transonic ow about a given wing. One approach to the design of a low drag transonic swept wing is to start with a shockiess airfoil in each wing section. Three-dimensional effects will cause shocks on such a wing, but we expect them not to be too severe. By small readjustments of the wing surface, which can be made by a code which treats the wing surface as a free boun dary, we can redesign the wing to reduce the strength of the shocks. Our method takes this program one step further. If an obstacle, such as an engine nacelle, is placed in the ow near an almost shockless wing, sizeable shocks can be expected to appear on the wing. We have incorporated a model of such an obstacle into the free boundary design code of Bauer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Results computed by a finite-difference, relaxation algorithm are presented for the supercritical flow (M = 0.825) about the C-141 airplane wing, which has sweep, taper, and twist. Comparisons with both wind-tunnel and flight data indicate that computed solutions of the classical transonic small disturbance equation can accurately simulate high Reynolds number flows when the shock sweep angle is small. It is also shown that this equation poorly approximates the complete potential equation when embedded shock waves are swept at angles greater than about 15 deg. Hence, a more consistent small disturbance equation is derived for use in more general cases.

Book excerpt: The analytical solution to the transonic small perturbation equation which describes steady compressible flow past finite wings at subsonic speeds can be expressed as a nonlinear integral equation with the perturbation velocity potential as the unknown function. This known formulation is substituted by a system of nonlinear algebraic equations to which various methods are applicable for its solution. Due to the presence of mathematical discontinuities in the flow solutions, however, a main computational difficulty was to ensure uniqueness of the solutions when local velocities on the wing exceeded the speed of sound. For continuous solutions this was achieved by embedding the algebraic system in an one-parameter operator homotopy in order to apply the method of parametric differentiation. The solution to the initial system of equations appears then as a solution to a Cauchy problem where the initial condition is related to the accompanying incompressible flow solution. In using this technique, however, a continuous dependence of the solution development on the initial data is lost when the solution reaches the minimum bifurcation point. A steepest descent iteration technique was therefore, added to the computational scheme for the calculation of discontinuous flow solutions. Results for purely subsonic flows and supersonic flows with and without compression shocks are given and compared with other available theoretical solutions.

Book excerpt: An Euler-based method for aerodynamic analysis of turboprop transport aircraft at transonic speeds has been developed. In this method, inviscid Euler equations are solved over surface-fitted grids constructed about aircraft configurations. Propeller effects are simulated by specifying sources of momentum and energy on an actuator disc located in place of the propeller. A stripwise boundary layer procedure is included to account for the viscous effects. A preliminary version of an approach to embed the exhaust plume within the global Euler solution has also been developed for more accurate treatment of the exhaust flow. The resulting system of programs is capable of handling wing-body-nacelle-propeller configurations. The propeller disks may be tractors or pushers and may represent single or counterrotation propellers. Results from analyses of three test cases of interest (a wing alone, a wing-body-nacelle model, and a wing-nacelle-endplate model) are presented. A user's manual for executing the system of computer programs with formats of various input files, sample job decks, and sample input files is provided in appendices.
