Book excerpt: At the intersection of mathematics, engineering, and computer science sits the thriving field of compressive sensing. Based on the premise that data acquisition and compression can be performed simultaneously, compressive sensing finds applications in imaging, signal processing, and many other domains. In the areas of applied mathematics, electrical engineering, and theoretical computer science, an explosion of research activity has already followed the theoretical results that highlighted the efficiency of the basic principles. The elegant ideas behind these principles are also of independent interest to pure mathematicians. A Mathematical Introduction to Compressive Sensing gives a detailed account of the core theory upon which the field is build. With only moderate prerequisites, it is an excellent textbook for graduate courses in mathematics, engineering, and computer science. It also serves as a reliable resource for practitioners and researchers in these disciplines who want to acquire a careful understanding of the subject. A Mathematical Introduction to Compressive Sensing uses a mathematical perspective to present the core of the theory underlying compressive sensing.

Book excerpt: This book describes algorithmic methods and hardware implementations that aim to help realize the promise of Compressed Sensing (CS), namely the ability to reconstruct high-dimensional signals from a properly chosen low-dimensional “portrait”. The authors describe a design flow and some low-resource physical realizations of sensing systems based on CS. They highlight the pros and cons of several design choices from a pragmatic point of view, and show how a lightweight and mild but effective form of adaptation to the target signals can be the key to consistent resource saving. The basic principle of the devised design flow can be applied to almost any CS-based sensing system, including analog-to-information converters, and has been proven to fit an extremely diverse set of applications. Many practical aspects required to put a CS-based sensing system to work are also addressed, including saturation, quantization, and leakage phenomena.

Book excerpt: The idea of balancing the resources spent in the acquisition and encoding of natural signals strictly to their intrinsic information content has interested nearly a decade of research under the name of compressed sensing. In this doctoral dissertation we develop some extensions and improvements upon this technique's foundations, by modifying the random sensing matrices on which the signals of interest are projected to achieve efficiency and security in its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a survey of the state-of-the art in the exciting and timely topic of compressed sensing for distributed systems. It has to be noted that, while compressed sensing has been studied for some time now, its distributed applications are relatively new. Remarkably, such applications are ideally suited to exploit all the benefits that compressed sensing can provide. The objective of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive survey of this topic, from the basic concepts to different classes of centralized and distributed reconstruction algorithms, as well as a comparison of these techniques. This book collects different contributions on these aspects. It presents the underlying theory in a complete and unified way for the first time, presenting various signal models and their use cases. It contains a theoretical part collecting latest results in rate-distortion analysis of distributed compressed sensing, as well as practical implementations of algorithms obtaining performance close to the theoretical bounds. It presents and discusses various distributed reconstruction algorithms, summarizing the theoretical reconstruction guarantees and providing a comparative analysis of their performance and complexity. In summary, this book will allow the reader to get started in the field of distributed compressed sensing from theory to practice. We believe that this book can find a broad audience among researchers, scientists, or engineers with very diverse backgrounds, having interests in mathematical optimization, network systems, graph theoretical methods, linear systems, stochastic systems, and randomized algorithms. To help the reader become familiar with the theory and algorithms presented, accompanying software is made available on the authors’ web site, implementing several of the algorithms described in the book. The only background required of the reader is a good knowledge of advanced calculus and linear algebra.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the design and implementation aspects of ultra-low power biosignal acquisition platforms that exploit analog-assisted and algorithmic approaches for power savings. The authors describe an approach referred to as “analog-and-algorithm-assisted” signal processing. This enables significant power consumption reductions by implementing low power biosignal acquisition systems, leveraging analog preprocessing and algorithmic approaches to reduce the data rate very early in the signal processing chain. They demonstrate savings for wearable sensor networks (WSN) and body area networks (BAN), in the sensors’ stimulation power consumption, as well in the power consumption of the digital signal processing and the radio link. Two specific implementations, an adaptive sampling electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition and a compressive sampling (CS) photoplethysmogram (PPG) acquisition system, are demonstrated. First book to present the so called, “analog-and-algorithm-assisted” approaches for ultra-low power biosignal acquisition and processing platforms; Covers the recent trend of “beyond Nyquist rate” signal acquisition and processing in detail, including adaptive sampling and compressive sampling paradigms; Includes chapters on compressed domain feature extraction, as well as acquisition of photoplethysmogram, an emerging optical sensing modality, including compressive sampling based PPG readout with embedded feature extraction; Discusses emerging trends in sensor fusion for improving the signal integrity, as well as lowering the power consumption of biosignal acquisition systems.

This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing advances in computational photography have introduced a range of new imaging techniques for capturing multidimensional visual data such as light fields, BRDFs, BTFs, and more. A key challenge inherent to such imaging techniques is the large amount of high dimensional visual data that is produced, often requiring GBs, or even TBs, of storage. Moreover, the utilization of these datasets in real time applications poses many difficulties due to the large memory footprint. Furthermore, the acquisition of large-scale visual data is very challenging and expensive in most cases. This thesis makes several contributions with regards to acquisition, compression, and real time rendering of high dimensional visual data in computer graphics and imaging applications. Contributions of this thesis reside on the strong foundation of sparse representations. Numerous applications are presented that utilize sparse representations for compression and compressed sensing of visual data. Specifically, we present a single sensor light field camera design, a compressive rendering method, a real time precomputed photorealistic rendering technique, light field (video) compression and real time rendering, compressive BRDF capture, and more. Another key contribution of this thesis is a general framework for compression and compressed sensing of visual data, regardless of the dimensionality. As a result, any type of discrete visual data with arbitrary dimensionality can be captured, compressed, and rendered in real time. This thesis makes two theoretical contributions. In particular, uniqueness conditions for recovering a sparse signal under an ensemble of multidimensional dictionaries is presented. The theoretical results discussed here are useful for designing efficient capturing devices for multidimensional visual data. Moreover, we derive the probability of successful recovery of a noisy sparse signal using OMP, one of the most widely used algorithms for solving compressed sensing problems.

Book excerpt: Future remote sensing systems will make extensive use of Compressive Sensing (CS) as it becomes more integrated into the system design with increased high resolution sensor developments and the rising earth observation data generated each year. Written by leading experts in the field Compressive Sensing of Earth Observations provides a comprehensive and balanced coverage of the theory and applications of CS in all aspects of earth observations. This work covers a myriad of practical aspects such as the use of CS in detection of human vital signs in a cluttered environment and the corresponding modeling of rib-cage breathing. Readers are also presented with three different applications of CS to the ISAR imaging problem, which includes image reconstruction from compressed data, resolution enhancement, and image reconstruction from incomplete data.
