"The Concept of Water" seeks to bring together the various aspects of our deeply ambiguous relationship with water, providing a systematic account of its symbolic and philosophical significance. R. D. V. Glasgow was born in Sheffield and currently lives in Zaragoza. His previous books are "Madness, Masks and Laughter" (1995), "Split Down the Sides" (1997), and "The Comedy of Mind" (1999).

Book Synopsis The Brighton School and the Birth of British Film by : Frank Gray
Download or read book The Brighton School and the Birth of British Film written by Frank Gray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is devoted to the work of two early British filmmakers, George Albert Smith and James Williamson, and the films that they made around 1900. Internationally, they are known collectively as the ‘Brighton School’ and are positioned as being at the forefront of Britain’s contribution to the birth of film. The book focuses on the years 1896 to 1903, as it was during this short period that film emerged as a new technology, a new enterprise and a new form of entertainment. Beginning with a historiography of the Brighton School, the study goes on to examine the arrival of the first 35mm films in Britain, the first film exhibitions in Brighton and the first projection of film in Brighton. Both Smith and Williamson’s work features a progression from the production of single shot unedited films to multi-shot edited films. Their subject matter was inspired by a knowledge of contemporary pantomime, humour, literature, theatre, mesmerism, the magic lantern and current affairs and their practices were underpinned by active involvement in the new film trade. Through the exploration of how these filmmakers cultivated a new way of understanding film and its commercial potential, this book establishes them as key figures in the development of British film culture.

Download or read book The Lordly Hudson written by Paul Goodman and published by New York, Macmillan. This book was released on 1962 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first collection of Paul Goodman's poems, though his verse has been appearing regularly in magazines for thirty years — during which time he was winning a reputation as a novelist and as an author and teacher in community planning, social psychology, anarchist politics, and literary criticism. But Mr. Goodman's poetry is the simplest, the most direct expression of what he has been trying to say in these apparently diverse fields. He has explained that he really has only one subject, man in his man-made environment. He wants to keep intact, for himself and for his readers, the relation between the spirited animals that we are and the environment, institutions, and culture that we have created but that now seem to be alien and menacing to life. He refuses to allow the modern world to become a set of external conditions to which we must resignedly conform; he keeps trying to discover the creative animal man still alive in those conditions. His poems are the cries of such discoveries. In this collection, Paul Goodman has tried to give a balanced expression of the whole range of his work. There are political poems and love poems, historical narratives and pictures of nature, ballads of the city and prayers to God."--Inside flap.

Book Synopsis The Supernatural in Early Modern Scotland by : Julian Goodare
Download or read book The Supernatural in Early Modern Scotland written by Julian Goodare and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about other worlds and the supernatural beings, from angels to fairies, that inhabited them. It is about divination, prophecy, visions and trances. And it is about the cultural, religious, political and social uses to which people in Scotland put these supernatural themes between 1500 and 1800. The supernatural consistently provided Scots with a way of understanding topics such as the natural environment, physical and emotional wellbeing, political events and visions of past and future. In exploring the early modern supernatural, the book has much to reveal about how men and women in this period thought about, debated and experienced the world around them. Comprising twelve chapters by an international range of scholars, The supernatural in early modern Scotland discusses both popular and elite understandings of the supernatural.
