Book excerpt: Lower Mississippi River macroinvertebrate drift densities and composition were determined at 3-hr intervals over 24-hr periods in mid-May and early June 1982. Samples were taken at the surface, middepth, and near the bottom at a nearshore sampling station and the surface and middepth at a sampling near the navigation channel. The overall mean drift density equaled 35.0 invertebrates/100 m3 of water. Overall, Chaoborus larvae were the most common invertebrates collected, followed, respectively, by chironomid pupae, Hydra sp., Hydropsyche orris, and Hexagenia sp. The abundance of various taxa in the Lower Mississippi River's drift seem to change markedly on a site-to-site basis, as a function of the physical characteristics of the river and its substrates in a certain area. This site-to-site heterogeneity, coupled with the lack of lateral homogeneity and the definite diel periodicity exhibited by some taxa, provides evidence that, even in an immense river such as the Mississippi, many of the organisms drift as they do in small streams, traveling relatively short distances with total movement rather saltatory. Book excerpt: This report describes benthic macroinvertebrate composition and distribution in four aquatic habitat types within a 60-mile reach of the Lower Mississippi River. The macroinvertebrate biotas of the four habitat types, dike fields (three), a natural band, a secondary channel, and an abandoned channel, were studied over one high flow (flood stage), two moderate, and two low flow periods between April 1979 and September 1980. The biotas present in the natural bank, secondary channel, and abandoned channel showed only minor changes in composition over the various flow regimes. Unlike the other habitats, the dike fields showed large changes in biotic composition, which correlated with changes in river stage and resultant alterations in current and substrate.

Book excerpt: This is a synoptic report describing water quality and composition and distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates, larval fishes, and fishes within a 62-mile reach of the lower Mississippi River. Major water quality differences among habitates were related to the presence or absence of current. Continual flow and high turbulence in lotic habitats such as the main channel and permanent secondary channel resulted in high suspended solids concentrations, high turbidites, low water transparencies, and low light penetration. Such physical characteristics resulted in low algal biomass, more stable pH and dissolved oxygen levels, and the constant availability of algal nutrients. In contrast, lentic areas, such as the abandoned channel at most river stages, and the dike fields at low flows, had relatively lower suspended solids and increased water clarity. This resulted in high algal biomass, higher pH readings, frequent dissolved oxygen supersaturation in surface waters, and nutrient depletion in slack-water areas.
