Book excerpt: Several different composite bolted joint analysis programs are now available to composite structures designers. All of the programs vary widely in the amount of input required, output received, and required user knowledge of composite materials. Six different bolted joint analysis programs will be examined. The various programs are (1) A4EJ, (2) BJSFM, (3) SASCJ, (4) SAMCJ, (5) SCAN, and (6) JOINT. Other analysis programs exist, but they apply many constraints on the problem definition and depend heavily on empirical test results. The relative merits of each program as well as their disadvantages will be discussed. The most appropriate applications of each of the programs will be presented, and some numerical comparisons of the results will be made. Each of the programs has a useful place in the design and analysis arena. An examination of the programs will be made to help users determine which program will best suit their needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing use of composites over metals for structural applications has made a thorough understanding of the behaviour of composite joints in various applications essential for engineers, but has also presented them with a new set of problems. Composite joints and connections addresses these differences and explores the design, modelling and testing of bonded and bolted joints and connections. Part one discusses bolted joints whilst part two examines bonded joints. Chapters review reinforcement techniques and applications for composite bolted and bonded joints and investigate the causes and effects of fatigue and stress on both types of joint in various applications and environments. Topics in part one include metal hybridization, glass-reinforced aluminium (GLARE), hybrid fibre metal laminates (FML), glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Topics in part two include calculation of strain energy release rates, simulating fracture and fatigue failure using cohesive zone models, marine and aerospace applications, advanced modelling, stress analysis of bonded patches and scarf repairs. Composite joints and connections is a valuable reference for composite manufacturers and composite component fabricators, the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and civil engineering industries and for anyone involved in the joining and repair of composite structures. Explores the design, modelling and testing of bonded and bolted joints and connections Reviews reinforcement techniques and applications for composite bolted and bonded joints Investigates the causes and effects of fatigue and stress on bolted and bonded joints in various applications and environments

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief review of recent Air Force programs in bolted joints in composite structures was presented in this paper. The review included analytical methods development and experimental verification. Analytical methods addressed both single fastener and multifastener joints. A number of joint design variables, such as, finite geometry, fastener arrangement, joint service environment, and a number of relevant parameters were addressed in these programs. The test programs included static and fatigue specimens. Single fastener and multifastener joint tests were conducted to correlate the analysis results. Full scale test specimens were used to verify the overall analysis strategy. A comprehensive design guide was developed for the design and analysis of bolted joints in composite structures. This design guide is supported by four computer programs. (SDW).

Book excerpt: A computing technique was developed to determine the feasibility of combining the several batch computer programs for the analysis of composite joints into one interactive computer program utilizing graphics display. This approach proved successful and produced a design tool for the analysis of bolted or bonded composite joints. The program utilizes the software package provided by TEKTRONIX for the graphics display. The user works at the remote on-line graphics terminal in conjunction with the main computing facilities which contain the program. The final report discusses the summary, conclusion, and recommendations of the work performed. The User's Manual and Programming Manual discusses the input, output, and function of the program.

Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A design guide was developed for bolted composite structural joints. The guide includes general design guidelines for the various joint parameters, an analytical design methodology, a description of the analytical design tools, an illustration of the use of corresponding computer codes (SASCJ and SAMCJ), and a listing of the computer codes. The proposed design procedure is purely analytical, ad enables the user to rapidly evaluate many different joint concepts for a selected application. When the bolted structure is fabricated using existing (fully characterized) materials, the design requires no complementary test results. Presented analytical design tools are currently restricted to primarily uniaxially loaded joints and fastener arrangements that are currently used in aircraft structures. Also, the bolted joint is assumed to be strength-critical. However, sample fatigue test results are presented to illustrate a durability check on the joint, assuming a simplified fatigue analysis and assuming that fatigue is induced by excessive hole elongation. Despite its current restrictions, this guide is the first government document that provides guidance and analytical tools for the design of bolted composite structures. Keywords: Bolted joints, composite structures, design guidelines, analytical design tools, user instructions, samples, program listing.

Book excerpt: This report contains recent developments in three aspects of joints in advanced fibrous composite structures: (1) nonlinear analysis of adhesively- bonded stepped-lap joints and doublers, (2) multirow mechanically fastened joints in aerospace structures, and (3) nonlinear analysis of combined bonded and bolted joints. The methods developed include nonlinearities needed for metal structures as well as those for composites. The analysis are based on continuum mechanics techniques and have been coded into three Fortran IV digital computer programs A4EI, A4EJ, and A4EK respectively. The report contains explanations of the derivations of the solutions as well as sample worked problems to illustrate both the capabilities of the programs and the behavior characteristics of the real structures.
