Book excerpt: Flight research has shown the effectiveness of adaptive flight controls for improving aircraft safety and performance in the presence of uncertainties. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA)'s Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) project designed and conducted a series of flight experiments to study the impact of variations in adaptive controller design complexity on performance and handling qualities. A novel complexity metric was devised to compare the degrees of simplicity achieved in three variations of a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) for NASA's F-18 (McDonnell Douglas, now The Boeing Company, Chicago, Illinois) Full-Scale Advanced Systems Testbed (Gen-2A) aircraft. The complexity measures of these controllers are also compared to that of an earlier MRAC design for NASA's Intelligent Flight Control System (IFCS) project and flown on a highly modified F-15 aircraft (McDonnell Douglas, now The Boeing Company, Chicago, Illinois). Pilot comments during the IRAC research flights pointed to the importance of workload on handling qualities ratings for failure and damage scenarios. Modifications to existing pilot aggressiveness and duty cycle metrics are presented and applied to the IRAC controllers. Finally, while adaptive controllers may alleviate the effects of failures or damage on an aircraft's handling qualities, they also have the potential to introduce annoying changes to the flight dynamics or to the operation of aircraft systems. A nuisance rating scale is presented for the categorization of nuisance side-effects of adaptive controllers. Book excerpt: A study of the feasibility of a self-learning adaptive system for the flight control of high performance aircraft has been performed. A flight control system was developed for the investigation of the stability augmentation of the longitudinal axis of the F101B aircraft using self-learning adaptive control. The learning adaptive controller developed employs a three-loop concept. The innermost loop comprises a linear feedback control system in which a set of control gains is adjusted by a second (adaptive) loop employing a parameter identifier and a trainable function generator (automation). The automation provides the correct values of feedback gain in response to patterns derived from the identified aircraft parameters. The third loop (the learning loop) measures control system performance, and continually retrains the automation to improve the performance. Experiments were performed with a digital simulation of the aircraft and the learning adaptive control system. Results of the experiments indicate that learning adaptive control is feasible. However, a number of significant technical problems must be overcome prior to the use of such a control system in tactical aircraft. Studies of sensitivity must be performed to assess the effect of small perturbations in the identification parameters on system performance. Extended studies of property extraction from the identified parameters is required, and means for further simplifying the control structure is of importance in a real system. (Author).

The symposium was planned and ran by the Flight Control Division, specifically the Flying Qualities Group and the Control Techniques Group as part of an ongoing effort to revise and upgrade both MIL-F-8785C, Military Specification, Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes, and MIL-F-9490D, Flight Control System-Design, Installation and Test of Piloted Aircraft, General Specification For. Specialists from both the flying qualities and flight control system disciplines were gathered in Dayton from both industry and government agencies. Formal and informal presentations, plus workshop discussions, were structured around proposed draft versions of the new Flying Qualities MIL-Standard and Handbook and the new Flight Control Systems MIL-Specification and Handbook. This report contains a record of the presentations and discussions as submitted by the individual authors.

Book excerpt: This current experiment was an attempt to measure workload during flight simulation, using two primary variables: the pilots' own evaluation sampled once per minute with a computer and the latency or delay of that response. This was supplemented by a post-flight questionnaire. Three levels of flight difficulty were established by subject matter experts. These were varied by controlling (1) initial clearance complexity, (2) level of air traffic control, (3) turbulence, and (4) inflight emergency. Flights were conducted in a General Aviation Instrument trainer and 12 pilots participated. Results demonstrated that pilots were willing and able to make inflight workload evaluations which corresponded directly with the induced difficulty level. Response latencies increased in relationship to difficulty, but the intermediate and most difficult flights were not significantly different. Factor analyses of all measures produced two clusters for the easiest and intermediate flights (inflight and postflight) and four for the most difficult flights. In the latter case, inflight and postflight measures separated into two factors and the questionnaire split also into two segments. These separations indicated that within the current state of the art, both types of measures should continue to be collected. Plans call for follow-on research in General Aviation Workload.

Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the development and rationale for a new approach to pilot proficiency measure ment in operational flight trainers. It is based on a 'natural pilot model' that identifies three criteria as being of prime importance to the understanding and measurement of pilot perform ance: consistency of system performance, human adaptability, and least effort in skilled performance. By means of these criteria - which arose from an effort to apply the servo-mechanism theory of skilled performance to the study of pilot proficiency - the investigators believe that the traditional impediments to valid measure ment will be removed; and that the characteristics that most crucially differentiate the good from the poor pilot will be measured. Ways of quantifying these criteria and the implications to training and further research are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: While all manner of both qualitative and quantitative assessment tools exist to measure pilot performance during aircraft flight test, the argument to mathematically correlate two such diametrically different metrics is strong. By definitively connecting a pilot’s written handling qualities or task loading feedback with measured performance data, researchers can more accurately examine any of a whole host of flight research topics. Building upon past research which shows a positive correlation between Cooper-Harper Handling Qualities Ratings and calculated values for power frequency using a group of experienced test pilots, it is valuable to examine whether power frequency correlates with other metrics such as the NASA Task Loading Index (TLX). TLX provides a measure of a pilot’s self-assessed workload and is routinely used in modern flight test experimentation to measure perceived pilot workload. Using data from twenty-nine instructor pilots flying the NASA Ice Contamination Effects Flight Training Device (ICEFTD), the data set examined showed little connection between power frequency values and the TLX scores assigned by the pilots to each approach. Among the group of pilots flying the ICEFTD, self-assessed workload was a poor indicator of measured work load – such a trend indicates that non-test pilot self-measurement in workload assessment may not be as valuable as trained test pilot measurements. A number of influential causal factors were evident in the use of this recycled data set, and an ideal retest scenario is discussed at length.
