This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade in services across the EU remains subject to a large number of restrictions, limiting choice for consumers and businesses, holding back growth, output and employment. The Commission has proposed a Directive which seeks to encourage greater cross-border trade in services by providing a legal framework that will eliminate obstacles to: the freedom for service providers to establish their business in any Member State; and the free movement of services between Member States. This report concentrates on the free movement of services between Member States. Under the Country of Origin Principle, a business which provides services in the Member State in which it is established is qualified to provide services on a temporary basis in any other Member State according to the regulations of its home Member State. Despite a substantial number of exceptions to the application of the Principle, the Directive has been criticised. The Committee, though, finds that the draft Services Directive does not pose a threat to the health and safety of employees or consumers, nor to environmental standards, nor to consumer protection. Services of general economic interest should not be excluded from the Directive. The draft Directive offers opportunities for small businesses in all 25 Member States of the European Union. The Services Directive is essential to remove unnecessary and unjustified obstacles to trade and to flexible markets thereby making the European Union more competitive in a global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book offers a novel view on the benefits of a lasting variation between the member states in the EU. In order to bring together thirty very different European states and their citizens, the EU will have to offer more scope for variation. Unlike the existing differentiation by means of opt-outs and deviations, variation is not a concession intended to resolve impasses in negotiations; it is, rather, a different structuring principle. It takes differences in needs and in democratically supported convictions seriously. A common core remains necessary, specifically concerning the basic principles of democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the common market. By taking this approach, the authors remove the pressure to embrace uniformity from the debate about the EU’s future. The book discusses forms of variation that fall both within and outside the current framework of European Union Treaties. The scope for these variations is mapped out in three domains: the internal market; the euro; and asylum, migration and border control.

Book excerpt: This book traces the development of internal marketing from initial conceptualisation through to the current issues. It identifies both significant underlying tensions between major theorists and areas in which new perspectives may enrich our understanding of this crucial subject. Internal marketing is the use of traditional strategies by organisations to market themselves to their employees. Presented in bite-sized sections, each of which dissects the most important themes and concepts underpinning the subject, this book explains how subsidiary areas of study have emerged and suggests how the introduction of concepts and perspectives from channel management literature can help analyse the dyadic encounters in which internal marketing takes place. Brown critically extends the scope of internal marketing theory yet further by presenting and analysing new interview transcripts to suggest that internal demarketing – an organisation making itself less attractive to its employees – may sometimes be undertaken intentionally. Internationally applicable and highly accessible, Internal Marketing is perfect for students, teachers, and researchers with an interest not only in internal marketing, but also in employer relations, internal branding, employer branding, and internal communications. It uses clear language and gradually introduces the reader to more sophisticated theoretical concepts step by step, with a uniquely focused, critical, and comprehensive thematic coverage of internal marketing and its extensive theoretical outputs.

Book excerpt: This edited volume takes a closer look at various European pension-plan models and the recent challenges, trends and predictions related to the design of such schemes. The contributors analyse new ideas, both from national governments and European institutions, and consider current debates on topics such as the Capital Markets Union (CMU) and the so-called ‘European Pillar of Social Rights’ – calling for a new approach to social policy at the European level in response to common challenges, such as ageing and the digital revolution. This interdisciplinary work embraces economic, financial and legal perspectives, while focusing on previously selected coherence aspects in order to ensure that the analyses are comprehensive and globally consistent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how liberalization of service provision related to movement of natural persons takes shape within EU and WTO law. It provides an overview and analysis of the implementation of the identified obligations derived from EU law and the GATS in the Dutch legal order and that of the United Kingdom. A thorough investigation of the chosen strategies in each legal order is provided, including a comparison of the differences and similarities between these strategies. The resulting overview leads to insight into the tension that exists between the international obligations related to service mobility of the two investigated states on the one hand, and their migration law and access to the labour market legislation on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the principle of mutual recognition in the EU legal order, this book takes a cross-policy approach to focus on the principle in the internal market and in the criminal justice area. It asks whether the principle of mutual recognition, as developed in relation to the free movement provisions (internal market), can equally be applied in judicial cooperation in criminal matters (the area of freedom, security, and justice), and if such a cross-policy application is desirable. Divided into three parts, the book first looks at the way this principle functions in the internal market. Part II examines how the principle works in judicial cooperation in criminal matters, with the final part answering the book's central questions. In each part, further related questions are asked: What is the object of the principle of mutual recognition? Who are the main actors involved? How does the mechanism of mutual recognition operate (with an emphasis on the existing limits to mutual recognition)? How does mutual recognition relate to harmonization and to mutual trust? What is the relevance of equivalence requirements and the distribution of competence between the home (issuing) State and the host (executing) State? What are the main characteristics of the principle of mutual recognition? And is it a workable principle? Through an in-depth analysis of the relevant Treaty provisions, EU legislation, EU case law, and EU policy documents, the book comes to the conclusion that a cross-policy application of the principle of mutual recognition is both feasible and desirable.

Book excerpt: The European Community is negotiating a new treaty to establish the constitutional foundations of an economic and monetary union in the course of the 1990s. This study provides the only comprehensive guide to the economic implications of economic and monetary union. The work of an economist inside the Commission of the European Community, it reflects the considerations influencing the design of the union. The study creates a unique bridge between the insights of modern economic analysis and the work of the policy makers preparing for economic and monetary union.
