Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key social and emotional milestones during adolescence are often directly related to the abilities to initiate and maintain intimate relationships, maintain physically maturing bodies, and manage personal sexuality. Most adolescents with developmental disabilities have particular difficulty expressing sexuality in satisfying ways, consequently facing issues such as limited intimate relationships, low self-esteem, increased social isolation, deregulated emotional maintenance, reduced sexual functioning, and limited sexual health. Appropriate sexual knowledge assists not only in achieving personal fulfillment, but protection from mistreatment, abuse, unplanned pregnancies, or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It also works to help solve problems of loneliness and problems with self-esteem. This book will address this but also much more. Issues of physical and cognitive development will be discussed, including appropriate sexual development/urges and brain development, and innate similarities and differences of sexuality that could occur between people with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual or developmental disabilities, including the complexities of physical disabilities. The authors will also consider special considerations for group homes and recreational facilities, and specifically focus on concepts of ethics and models of consent (medical, legal, social, and educational), as well as how to deal with uncertainty.

Book excerpt: EveryBody is a curriculum that emphasizes prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among early adolescents. It fosters active learning and facilitates communication about HIV/STD prevention and promotes safer behaviors. EveryBody incorporates current research on adolescent development so it can meet students where they are. Its abstinence-based approach promotes risk elimination as the safest way to prevent HIV/STD infections, endorsing risk reduction as an important component of HIV/STD prevention strategies. Lessons and activities promote development, internalization, and use of prevention-related skills and knowledge, commitment to lifelong health, self-efficacy, hope for the future, and courage. EveryBody aims to prevent interconnected high-risk behaviors and encourage interconnected protective behaviors. The curriculum addresses relevant psychosocial issues such as the experience of fear and anger in the context of HIV/STD prevention. It examines anger as an uncomfortable emotion and guides students to see that such emotions do not necessitate self-destructive risk taking. Six chapters include: (1) "Developmental Issues"; (2) "Teaching EveryBody"; (3) "Recommended Sequences for EveryBody Activities"; (4) "Information about HIV and AIDS"; (5) "Information on STDs"; and (6) "Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs." Twenty-four activities are included. (SM)

This book was released on 1991 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide was developed out of a 5-year project aimed at preventing the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by promoting HIV prevention and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) education in school health programs. This document includes recommendations of a January, 1989 forum which addressed HIV prevention education for special education students, results of a review of existing curricula, and information on a training model which calls for teams of health educators and special educators to collaborate on the planning and delivery of instruction. The introduction describes the sponsoring organizations. A summary of the forum conclusions addresses the roles of professionals, parents, and children and youth with special needs as well as specific deficiencies discovered in instruction and curriculum; recommendations are provided under such topics as policy, training, inservice, statewide activities, curriculum, and instruction. Basic information about HIV and AIDS is presented next and includes information on risk factors for children and the role of education in helping stop the spread of AIDS. Policies, resolutions, and principles of several organizations for AIDS prevention education are presented next. Curriculum information is provided in the final section and includes a checklist for a good AIDS curriculum, a listing of curricula receiving favorable reviews, a sample AIDS curriculum, and a sample lesson plan. A list of resources including 14 materials, a database, three hotlines, and sources of training conclude the guide. (DB)

Book excerpt: One in five people in the United States had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) on any given day in 2018, totaling nearly 68 million estimated infections. STIs are often asymptomatic (especially in women) and are therefore often undiagnosed and unreported. Untreated STIs can have severe health consequences, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, miscarriage or newborn death, and increased risk of HIV infection, genital and oral cancers, neurological and rheumatological effects. In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the National Association of County and City Health Officials, commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to examine the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provide recommendations for action. In 1997, the Institute of Medicine released a report, The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Although significant scientific advances have been made since that time, many of the problems and barriers described in that report persist today; STIs remain an underfunded and comparatively neglected field of public health practice and research. The committee reviewed the current state of STIs in the United States, and the resulting report, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Advancing a Sexual Health Paradigm, provides advice on future public health programs, policy, and research.
