Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the public, researchers, and policymakers are losing confidence in public schooling, this presentation of case studies of four schools offers solutions and concrete models of diverse ways in which excellence can be attained in middle-grade schools. Asking what "effectiveness" means for the young adolescent age group (a hitherto unexplored area in research literature), how effective schools come about, and how they achieve acceptance in their communities, Lipsitz identifies and examines successful middle-grade schools, noting that the major problem in schooling is meeting the massive individual differences in the development of early adolescents.

Download or read book Visionary Middle Schools written by Catherine Cobb Morocco and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take an up-close look at inclusive urban schools that work. This important new book addresses head-on the critical national concern of educating an ever-more diverse student population. Visionary Middle Schools describes how three schools developed unique local solutions that were responsive to their particular students, to their cultures, and to their district and state mandates. Each school is organized around a different school-wide instructional practice, a "signature practice" that reflects that school's particular beliefs about learning. Despite obstacles such as poverty, low English-language proficiency, and new immigrant status, each of these schools is the strongest performing in their respective districts and presents approaches and lessons of relevance to urban schools across the country.

Download or read book In the Middle written by Martha Naomi Alt and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prompted by widely held concerns about middle schools' academic rigor and the effectiveness of activities designed to help early adolescents develop in non-academic realms, many middle school educators have renewed efforts to develop curricula and instructional strategies that challenge students academically and expand their intellectual interests, to ensure that teachers receive appropriate training to meet student needs, and to create more nurturing and supportive environments. This report uses data from the Schools and Staffing Survey and the accompanying Teacher Follow-Up Survey to describe various aspects of middle schools, examine how they have changed over time, and compare middle schools with elementary and secondary schools. Following an introduction exploring policy issues related to middle schools, the report examines data in the areas of: (1) organization of schooling, including locations, size and other characteristics, and classroom organization and class size; (2) programs and services, including health-related services; (3) decision making and management, including site-based decision making and principals' and teachers' perceptions of their influence; (4) staffing, including qualifications, teacher workload, and staff turnover; and (5) school climate, including teacher satisfaction, and teachers' and administrators' ratings of problems at their schools. The concluding section of the report explores areas for future research. Tables and notes are appended. (Contains 66 references.) (HTH)
