This book was released on 2019 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-intensity interval resistance training (HIRT) style exercise has been expanding in utilization in gym and rehabilitation settings. The metabolic demands of HIRT are not well documented in the Compendium of Physical Activities. The Borg rating of perceived exertion (RPE) 6-20 scale has been used to monitor and prescribe exercise intensity in several modes of exercise, however, the relation between heart rate (HR) and RPE in HIRT exercise is not understood. The purpose of this study was to quantify the metabolic demand in HIRT while examining the relation between RPE and HR. Twenty-six participants (10 male; 16 female) completed kettlebell (KB) swings and The Real RunnerTM (RR) interval style resistance protocols at least 48 hours after completing a maximal aerobic fitness test. The KB protocol consisted of 35 seconds of maximal effort work followed by 25 seconds of rest for 10 rounds (16kg males; 8kg females). The RR protocol followed a Tabata style design for 4 minutes. Oxygen consumption, HR, and RPE were recorded at the end of each work interval. KB exercise oxygen consumption was significantly different between males (31.20 ± 4.37ml/kg/min) and females (23.25 ± 3.8 ml/kg/min; p

This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: To investigate the influence of body weight, exercise modality, and pace on physiological and perceptual responses during walking. Also, to determine if the relationship between physiological and perceptual responses was altered by modality, pace, or weight status. Methods: Aerobically untrained males (n=80, 22.85 ± 3.61 years) and females (n=80, 21.18 ± 1.52 years) classified as either overweight or non-overweight participated. Individuals completed two sessions separated by 72 hours. Session 1 included familiarization, whole body DXA scan, treadmill test to exhaustion, and a 70 foot walk test to determine self selected walking speed. For session 2, participants were randomly assigned to an exercise condition for a one mile walk (track at self selected intensity, treadmill at self selected intensity, track at prescribed intensity, treadmill at prescribed intensity) while physiological, perceptual, and metabolic parameters were collected. Results: Factorial ANOVA controlling for sex showed at prescribed pace, the track increased blood lactate significantly from pre to post-exercise when compared to the treadmill. Prescribed pace produced a greater increase in blood lactate from pre to post-exercise compared to self selected pace. Prescribed pace resulted in greater increases in blood pressures, longer heart rate recovery, greater average oxygen consumption, higher average and final heart rates, and higher energy expenditure during exercise (kcal/min). Overweight individuals showed higher values for final heart rate, percentage of maximal heart rate worked, and total energy expenditure. Greater perceived effort and higher pain ratings were seen on the treadmill and at prescribed pace. The variation in RPE responses during prescribed pace was found to be significantly greater than the self selected exercise. Conclusion: A novel finding of this study was the increased physiological stress and perception of effort during prescribed pace exercise and on the treadmill while total energy expenditure showed no significant differences. This could indicate an unfavorable perception and less affective response to the treadmill. With energy balance as a primary concern with overweight and obese populations, these results indicate that exercise at self selected pace in the preferred environment promotes an enjoyable experience with similar health benefits as those seen during exercise at prescribed higher intensity.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine the energy expenditure and relative intensity of two Crossfit workouts. Fifteen subjects (7 males, 8 females) performed a VO2max test before participating in the CrossFit workouts. Additionally, subjects completed two different CrossFit workouts, which included a similar number of sets and repetitions. Each workout included a 5-minute warm-up, a skill phase, a workout of the day (WOD), and a 5-minute cool-down phase. During the CrossFit workouts heart rate was measured every minute using radiotelemetry. Subjects reported rating of perceived exertion (RPE) after each set of exercises and upon completion of the workout using the 6-20 Borg scale. Males had a significantly higher VO2, session RPE, and energy expenditure during both workouts compared to females. Heart rates were elevated to 90% of HRmax, and VO2 reached 80% VO2max in both workouts. Both values fall within the training range recommended by ACSM for improving cardiorespiratory endurance.
