Book excerpt: Limited informations are available about the accuracy and precision of intraoral scanners when they are applied in implantology, especially by edentulous jaws. Compare the accuracy and precision of two intraoral scanner and determine the impact of dentist's skills on scanning results were the golas of stady. Stone model with four implant analogues (Straumannu00ae) and polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) scan bodies was digitized with: industrial scanner (Atos Core 135 - used as a reference) and with two intraoral scanners (Triosu00ae; Omnicamu00ae).Four dentists scanned stone model in accordance with recommended scan protocol. Intraoral scans were superimposed on the reference model, to evaluate accuracy. All scanns superimposed on each other within groups, to evaluate precision.Triosu00ae has a higher degree of precision and accuracy compared to Omnicamu00ae.The study indicate that the dentist's skill has important impact on the measurement results.

Book excerpt: TitleDigital intraoral scanners vs traditional impressions: Fitting accuracy of screwed mesostructuresBackgroundPassive fit and marginal precision of prosthetic structures on osteointegrated implants are a requirement to minimize tensions and to avoid loss of marginal bone and finally lack of osteointegration. The impression process is a primary step to obtain sufficient accuracy. We use daily intraoral scanners for impressions to made implant restorations from several years and we appreciate the clinical outcomes for passive fitting (cemented sovrastructures) and precision of screwed ones.AimThe aim of this job is to investigate the marginal accuracy of custom CoCr milled mesostructures on implants acquiring impressions by intraoral digital scanners and compare them to ones obtained bytraditional impressions systems and to evaluate if the misfit is within the optimal measure of 25-50u00b5m.Material and methodsTwo pair of implants were rigidly fixed in maxilla resin models. The first two implant were internal hexagonal flat connection implants made by Winsix implant system ( Biosaf In srl). The second two were internal octagonal conical connection implants made by Geass (Geass srl). Three impressions were took of each model. The first one was a traditional impression made by polyether material with the single impression technique. The other two impression was acquired using CS3500 Carestream Intraoral Scanner and Trios3 intraoral scanner. The digital impressions were made following factory recommendations for implant cases workflow.Milled CoCr screwed mesostructures were commissioned on the three impressions of each model. The aim was to analyze the misfit of the three mesostructures obtained using Sheffield test. The misfit was evaluated by a radiograph taken perpendicularly to the long axis of the implants. ImageJu00ae software was used to digitally process the radiographic images and perform the measurements. ResultsWe eliminate, using an artificial model some intraoral variables as blood, saliva, patient movements but we simulate the natural architecture of mouth maintaining crestal anatomy, gum, implant distance. We investigate the misfit radiographically performing the Scheffield test: in this way we screwed firmly only one screw of the mesostructure and we observe the matching of the other implant-structure connection. The bigger misfit was appreciate on the two mesostructures obtained by traditional impressions, one of them has failed to comply with the established gap limit of 50 u00b5m.Very good fitting, within the limit of 50 u00b5m was found on three mesostructures: The one made by impression with Carestream intraoral scanner CS3500 on winsix implantsand the two performed by Trios3 intraoral scanner 3Shapedental on Winsix implants and Geass Way implantsThe fitting accuracy of the last mesostructure made by impression performed on Geass Way implants with CS3500 scanner looks a middle way.ConclusionsThe misfit of all the mesostructures obtained by digital intraoral scanners seems to be in the safety range, avoiding structural tensions involving implant after screwing. This study confirm the fitting accuracy of milled mesostructures obtainable by digital intraoral impressions. We expected a more homogeneous results in the group of mesostructures obtained by digital impressions, poor number of mesostructures investigated may be the reason of the discrepancy.More data are indispensable to complete the results obtained and to investigate the real accuracy obtainable .

The ability of modern scanners to articulate digital models must be scientifically evaluated. Methods:Twenty five digital articulated models were produced from four digital scanners in five experimental groups. The resulting inter-arch measurements were compared to the gold standard. An acceptable range of 0.5mm more or less than the gold standard was used for evaluation. Results: iTero® and iTero® Element yielded all acceptable inter-arch measurements. The 3M"!True Definition and Ortho Insight 3D® with Regisil® bite registration produced four of six acceptable inter-arch measurements. The Ortho Insight 3D® with Coprwax "!bite registration yielded three of six acceptable inter-ach measurements. Conclusions: The iTero® and iTero® Element produced the most accurately articulated models. The 3M"!True Definition and Ortho Insight 3D® with Regisil® were the next most accurate. The Ortho Insight 3D® scanner with Coprwax "!was the least accurate method tested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography has been used for several decades as a tool for measuring the three-dimensional geometry of the internal organs in medicine. However, in recent years, we have seen a move in manufacturing industries for the use of X-ray computed tomography; first to give qualitative information about the internal geometry and defects in a component, and more recently, as a fully-quantitative technique for dimensional and materials analysis. This trend is primarily due to the ability of X-ray computed tomography to give a high-density and multi-scale representation of both the external and internal geometry of a component, in a non-destructive, non-contact and relatively fast way. But, due to the complexity of X-ray computed tomography, there are remaining metrological issues to solve and the specification standards are still under development. This book will act as a one-stop-shop resource for students and users of X-ray computed tomography in both academia and industry. It presents the fundamental principles of the technique, detailed descriptions of the various components (hardware and software), current developments in calibration and performance verification and a wealth of example applications. The book will also highlight where there is still work to do, in the perspective that X-ray computed tomography will be an essential part of Industry 4.0.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its introduction to dentistry, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has undergone a rapid evolution and considerable integration into orthodontics. However, despite the increasing popularity of CBCT and progress in applying it to clinical orthodontics, the profession has lacked a cohesive, comprehensive and objective reference that provides clinicians with the background needed to utilize this technology optimally for treating their patients. Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Orthodontics provides timely, impartial, and state-of-the-art information on the indications and protocols for CBCT imaging in orthodontics, clinical insights gained from these images, and innovations driven by these insights. As such, it is the most current and authoritative textbook on CBCT in orthodontics. Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Orthodontics is organized to progress sequentially through specific topics so as to build the knowledgebase logically in this important and rapidly evolving field. Part I provides the foundational information on CBCT technology, including radiation exposure and risks, and future evolutions in computed tomography. Part II presents the Principles and Protocols for CBCT Imaging in Orthodontics, focusing on developing evidence-based criteria for CBCT imaging, the medico-legal implications of CBCT to the professional and the protocols and integration of this technology in orthodontic practice. Part III provides critical information on CBCT-based Diagnosis and Treatment Planning that includes how to interpret CBCT scans, identify incidental pathologies and the possible other uses of this technology. Part IV covers practical aspects of CBCT’s Clinical Applications and Treatment Outcomes that encompasses a range of topics, including root morphology and position, treatment of impacted teeth, virtual surgical treatment planning and outcomes, and more.
