Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and Capitalism tells a story of the relationship between the economy and architectural design. Eleven historians each discuss in brand new essays the time period they know best, looking at cultural and economic issues, which in light of current economic crises you will find have dealt with diverse but surprisingly familiar economic issues. Told through case studies, the narrative begins in the mid-nineteenth century and ends with 2011, with introductions by Editor Peggy Deamer to pull the main themes together so that you can see how other architects in different times and in different countries have dealt with similar economic conditions. By focussing on what previous architects experienced, you have the opportunity to avoid repeating the past. With new essays by Pier Vittorio Aureli, Ellen Dunham-Jones, Keller Easterling, Lauren Kogod, Robert Hewison, Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, Robin Schuldenfrei, Deborah Gans, Simon Sadler, Nathan Rich, and Micahel Sorkin.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together, for the first time, a wide-ranging and detailed body of information identifying and assessing risk, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in urban centres in low- and middle-income countries. Framed by an overview of the main possibilities and constraints for adaptation, the contributors examine the implications of climate change for cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and propose innovative agendas for adaptation. The book should be of interest to policy makers, practitioners and academics who face the challenge of addressing climate change vulnerability and adaptation in urban centres throughout the global South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of the roles of women in prime time soap operas. In a comparative analysis of British and North American television soaps, Christine Geraghty examines the relationship between the narratives on the screen and the women viewers who make up the traditional soap audience. Within the structure of many of the most popular soaps, such as Dallas, Dynasty, Coronation Street and EastEnders, the split between public and personal life, reason and emotion, work and leisure is turned into a lynchpin of the plot. The author argues that these themes are also linked to broader social divisions between men and women, divisions which soap operas both question and develop as a source of pleasure. Geraghty analyses the critical role of women characters in the families and communities of soaps and suggests that the utopian possibilities of soaps can be used not just to maintain the status quo, but to promote change and influence attitudes and prejudices. She examines the way in which soaps have been transformed in the last decade, looking at how issues of class, race, sexual orientation and feminism have been handled in the programmes. She argues that in pursuing new audiences more recent soaps such as Brookside may have put at risk the pleasures they have traditionally offered their women viewers. Women and Soap Opera is a detailed, thoughtful and wide-ranging analysis which will become a central work in women’s studies and media and cultural studies courses.

Book excerpt: In the new book, Serenissima: Venice in Winter, Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman provide a stunning combination of fine art and journalistic photography twinned with lyrical text to capture the visual magic that occurs when "the most serene republic" reclaims itself as a living, breathing city and once more becomes a place "of water-filled streets..velvet shadows and footsteps echoing off paving stones in the post-midnight silence..." Six years in the making and shot entirely in black and white, Serenissima: Venice in Winter combines brilliant architectural imagery with documentary photography in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and the great Italian photojournalist Gianni Berengo Gardin. Frank Van Riper's text shows the same literary mastery that won him a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard and reflects the dreamlike quality of the photographs, while also acknowledging the mystery and magic that Venice is famous for. AUTHOR: Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman are a husband-and-wife team whose speciality is location portraiture and documentary photography. Goodman's photographs have appeared in Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art and in the Baltimore Museum. Van Riper's photographs are in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of American Art, and Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine. He now writes 'Frank Van Riper on Photography,' a column that appears exclusively and worldwide on Washingtonpost.com, making him the most widely read photography writer in the United States. SELLING POINTS: Over 90 photographs of this historic and romantic city as it is rarely captured, during the winter's mist and rain Of interest to any collector of fine art photography, travelers, and lovers of Italy 92 b/w photos
