Book excerpt: The distribution and abundance of scleractinian corals at Pearl and Hermes Atoll (PHA), Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, were determined by georeferenced towed-diver surveys that covered more than 85,000 m2 of benthic habitat and site-specific surveys at 34 sites during 2000-2002. Three complementary methods (towed-diver surveys, videotransects, and photoquadrats) were used to quantify percent cover of corals by genus or species in the fore reef, back reef, lagoon, and channel habitats. Three genera--Porites, Montipora, and Pocillopora--account for 97% of the coral cover throughout the atoll, though their relative abundances vary considerably according to habitat and geographic sector within habitats. Fore-reef communities are dominated by massive and encrusting Porites, while the back reef is dominated by Montipora and the lagoon by Porites compressa. All taxa show habitat-specific differences in colony density and size-class distributions as assessed through colony counts within belt transects at fixed sites. These demographic data, which provide the most thorough quantitative description of the coral communities at PHA to date, are used to focus a discussion on risks of reef degradation from salient contemporary hazards, including bleaching, disease, marine debris, and Acanthaster predation. Coral communities at PHA may be the most vulnerable in the Hawaiian Archipelago to bleaching and accumulation of marine debris, thus warranting special management attention. These data also provide a detailed baseline to which population parameters determined from long-term monitoring surveys can be compared to assess the direction, pace, and drivers of change.

Colony counts within belt transects at fixed sites were used to assess colony density and size-class distribution. Significant differences were found between the two banks at comparable depths (7-18 m) in percent coral cover, relative abundance of the three primary genera (Porites, Montipora, and Pocillopora), and size class distributions of these genera. The coral community at Lisianski/Neva Shoal was characterized by higher percent cover, higher colony density, and a tendency towards larger colonies than the coral community at Laysan. Porites was the dominant genus at both locations, but the relative abundance of Pocillopora and Montipora differed between the banks, with Pocillopora more common at Laysan than at Lisianski/Neva Shoal, and Montipora more common at Lisiansksi/Neva Shoal than at Laysan. Notable differences were also found in the distribution of the three primary genera at the two banks. These demographic data are discussed in the context of the known history of exposure of these remote reefs to salient factors influencing the condition of coral communities including marine debris, bleaching, and disease. They provide a detailed baseline of the composition of these shallow-water communities in the early years of the 21st century that will serve as a comparative benchmark for examining long-term change.

In recent decades M. dilatata has been decreasing in abundance and is now considered a Species of Concern (SOC) by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS). In this study, known M. dilatata colonies in Northern Kāne'ohe Bay were surveyed to determine if the environmental parameters of the colonies are similar on different reefs of similar size and location. The confirmed colonies were compared with random points on a nearby reef on which M. dilatata had not been previously identified. A visual survey was completed on this reef which resulted in several potential M. dilatata colonies being identified based on morphology. Community structure, water depth, pH, salinity, spatial complexity, and colony size were compared between reefs using t-test analyses. These results could indicate the likelihood of the unidentified colonies being M. dilatata based on similarities and differences between the three studied reefs.

Book excerpt: Coral reefs are increasingly under threat, necessitating an emphasis to identify coral reefs with reduced susceptibilities to local and/or global anthropogenic impacts. Mesophotic coral reefs (MCEs; >30m) are proposed as potential refugia and/or propagule sources, yet little information is known about deep reefs' abilities to harbor, replenish, or conserve shallow species. In this dissertation, I examine the plausibility of MCEs to act as refugia for shallow reef fishes in the Hawaiian Islands. Chapter One explores reef fish community structure and habitat composition along a 3-50m gradient in West Hawai'i. Reef fish communities change gradually with depth, with >78% of species observed at mesophotic depths (>30m) found at shallow depths. Changes in community structure are linked closely with feeding behavior, with shallow reefs dominated by herbivores, while mesophotic reefs are dominated by invertivore and planktivore trophic assemblages. Changes in fish assemblages are tied to indirect effects of depth and available coral habitat, as deeper reefs contain more patchily-distributed habitat. Chapter Two examines mechanisms underlying herbivorous fish distributions using a suite of observational and experimental field and laboratory techniques. Herbivorous fishes are not limited by food resources at MCE depths, as MCE algae had similar nutritional content, species assemblages, and appears to be highly palatable from algal choice experiments. Instead, changes with depth are likely the result of top-down, non-consumptive predation effects and behavioral choices. Chapter Three undertakes a critical analysis of the deep refugia hypothesis for coral reef fishes across the Main Hawaiian Islands. Upper MCEs (30-60m) may act as refugia for shallow reef fishes, as we found they are more thermally stable and >70% of reef fishes encountered were shallow species. Conversely, MCEs contain reduced densities of reef fishes and communities are comprised almost solely of invertivore and planktivore trophic groups. The near-absence of herbivorous fishes below 30m indicate MCEs will have a limited capacity to re-seed shallow reefs with species of ecological or economic importance. Overall, MCEs may act as refugia for biodiversity conservation but their ability to restock shallow reef fish communities will result in fundamentally different community compositions that shift towards smaller-bodied and less economically/ecologically valuable species.

Book excerpt: Despite a wealth of information on the effects of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), the direct influence of marine protection on specifically coral communities has yet to be fully established. The goal of my dissertation research was to determine whether, in the Main Hawaiian Islands, MPAs influence coral communities and ecological processes with direct and indirect effects to these. My specific research objectives were to determine the effects of MPAs on: (1) the composition of the benthic community; (2) grazing by parrotfishes; (3) predation on coral by fishes; and (4) the balance between bioerosion and accretion of the reef framework. While I found a trend of greater herbivorous fish populations at sites with greater levels of marine protection, this was not associated with a predictable benthic community composition such as low macro- or filamentous turf algal cover, high crustose coralline algal cover and coral cover, or low densities of Tripneustes gratilla and Echinometra mathaei urchins My grazing study demonstrated that algal reduction rates by parrotfishes were positively related to parrotfish biomass, and were proportionately greater per unit biomass for large compared to small parrotfishes. I found fish predation on coral by Arothron meleagris and Cantherhines dumerilli to be prevalent across study sites, and focused on the most common Hawaiian coral species. Predation by A. meleagris on Porites compressa appeared to have little effect when the coral was abundant and when lesions healed efficiently, but limited P. compressa population growth once corals become sparse, and/or the size of corals become very small. The carbonate budget I developed, while simplified, showed study reefs to have net accretion, and this to be driven primarily by growth of the coral community.
