This book was released on 2002 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of full-time and part-time faculty is an area of major interest in education, especially in light of the dramatic rise of part-time faculty on the nation2s campuses. In the period between 1976 and 1994, the use of full-time faculty increased by 21% while the use of part-time faculty increased by 91% (Clery, 1998). The quality of instruction is the primary concern surrounding the use of part-time faculty (Clery, 1998; Fedler, 1989; Gappa & Leslie, 1997; Leslie, 1998; Mellander & Mellander, 1999; Spangler, 1990). One way of assessing quality of education is by assessing teacher effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to compare the teaching effectiveness of part-time and full-time clinical nursing faculty. To achieve this, the Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (NCTEI) (Knox & Mogan, 1985) was adapted for use in measuring student and faculty perceptions of part-time faculty and of full-time faculty. The NCTEI was designed to measure five categories important in clinical nursing instruction: teaching ability, nursing competence, evaluation, interpersonal relationships, and personality traits.

It can be a daunting task if one is not prepared and mentored. This book provides a concise and accessible guide for nursing instructors leading students in the healthcare agency for the first time, as well as experienced educators who are interested in exploring new teaching strategies. It covers many aspects of the clinical instructor role including: meeting the nurse manager organizing and documenting your clinical day creating clinical student assignments objectively evaluating student's individual performance acknowledging diversity and inclusiveness tracking progress and handling student errors In addition, the book discusses some of the more complex issues surrounding the role of the clinical instructor such as accountability for nursing care, documentation and medication administration carried out by students. The book features numerous forms and charts to assist in organizing and managing the teaching experience, as well as situational scenarios to help prepare instructors for unique situations that arise during the clinical experience. Written by authors with extensive experience in clinical care and teaching, this book will be an invaluable guide for all clinical nursing instructors, both novice and experienced. Book excerpt: The interaction with, accountability for, and inclusion of part-time instructors is a growing concern of higher education. The increase and development of virtual classrooms, online courses, and other transformative technologies have also impacted this particular phenomenon. As students become more focused on a customized education that fits their lives, it is evident that the traditional form of lecture in the classroom as the primary source of teaching will continue to evolve and change. This new normal of how education is delivered and taught in higher education institutions of today leads to the primary question of this study, which is who is and who will be teaching. According to the American Federation of Teachers, as cited in Charlier and Williams (2011), it is estimated that part-time instructors account for more than 68% of the professoriate teaching in the country's community colleges. Based on their perceived role and value incurred by their institutions, it is clear that this segment of faculty will continue to be significant contributors or detractors to the core mission of their institutions. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions of part-time and full-time faculty members at Gadsden State Community College regarding the inclusion or exclusion of this growing population of educators. Utilizing an online survey instrument, the study will provide a framework of practices and strategies with the potential to bring about a higher level of involvement and job satisfaction for part-time faculty.

Book excerpt: The study purpose was to explore clinical instructors' perceptions of empowerment in academic nursing environments. Clinical instructors (CIs), often parttime faculty, facilitate learning in professional practice environments. However, they also need to function within the academic environment to learn about the curriculum and how students are to be evaluated. The qualitative description method was used to obtain an understanding of CIs' empowerment experiences and to interpret their perceptions within the framework of Kanter's (1977, 1993) structural empowerment and Spreitzer's (1995) psychological empowerment theories. Eight CIs from two nursing programs were interviewed for this study. All empowerment components were important in CIs' perceptions of their role with support and confidence being key components. An implication for CIs was slow development of confidence in their ability to facilitate student learning that was consistent with curriculum goals. Recommendations for CIs and academic faculty are offered to support and retain clinical faculty.

Book excerpt: The Center for Community College Student Engagement encourages colleges to hold focus groups with part-time and full-time faculty to learn about differences in the faculty and their experience at their college and to complement survey data. Survey responses tell the "what" about faculty's experiences; through conducting focus groups, colleges will learn the "why." In addition to gathering specific details about faculty perceptions and experiences, these structured discussions will also help uncover possible strategies to consider for strengthening the role of part-time faculty at the college. Provided in this toolkit are materials for organizing focus groups and sample focus group discussion guides for faculty. In addition, sample quantitative response sheets are provided to gather basic demographic information, as well as information to complement findings from discussions. [This toolkit was produced as part of the Center initiative Strengthening the Role of Part-Time Faculty in Community Colleges, supported by MetLife Foundation.].

Marshall and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Registered Nurses are expected to behave professionally and ethically by the society who trusts that they are competent to provide care. Nursing education programs must therefore include ethical development in their academic curricula. Yet a troubling finding is that nursing faculty members disagree on what constitutes unethical and dishonest nursing student behaviors. In an effort to mitigate student cheating, a top-down approach was designed to measure the impact of a specifically designed, brief training session on adjunct nursing faculty perceptions on identifying and dealing with dishonest and unethical behaviors. The three hour training session was rooted in Michaelsen's Team-Based Learning strategy, and was found to be positively significant related to improving understanding in a convenience sample of adjunct nursing faculty at a large, southern community college. Implications of these important findings for teaching and learning in adjunct nursing groups, as well as other adjunct groups outside nursing are discussed and recommendations for future study are offered.
