This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on work by the Miombo Network in southern Africa, this book helps decision-makers and general readers alike improve their understanding of the socio-ecology of the Miombo woodlands across southern Africa. It also highlights the importance of and the need for further research on the unique Miombo ecology and its link with economic development. One major challenge facing these woodlands is the influence that direct (both natural and anthropogenic) and indirect drivers of change, as well as interactions between these, have had over the centuries. As such the book explores the socio-economic and ecological interactions that occur in these woodlands and discusses the need for further research to provide a better understanding of these interactions. Drawing on data and information from numerous studies conducted in the last 20 years, the book presents a comparative analysis of policy changes and management experiences in the countries concerned. It also addresses issues of global climate change, since they have an impact on Miombo ecosystem management and restoration, and provides future projections based on an assessment of how climate change has affected the Miombo woodlands in the past.

Book excerpt: This publication focuses on the links between food security, nutrition and wood energy in the Miombo woodlands, one of the most important forest ecosystems in southern Africa. Miombo woodland is a key dryland forest ecosystem stretching across southern Africa (Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique,Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe). The woodlands are considered one of the most globally important biodiversity hotspots. They sustain the livelihoods of close to 100 million rural poor through the provision of wood energy, food and nutrition. Miombo woodlands are increasingly under threat from a growing population, expansion of agricultural land, overuse of forest resources and unsustainable management. With the impacts of climate change already contributing to rising food insecurity in many parts of the world and with growing biodiversity loss, bringing the Miombo countries together to share best practices towards addressing common challenges facing the woodlands is vital.

Book excerpt: The main aim of the study was to ascertain whether Miombo woodlands have the potential of replacing themselves in terms of demography of seedling regeneration in three different Miombo forests of Liwonde, Ntchisi and Perekezi in Malawi. The study analyzed different descriptors that characterize the woodlands including: species composition, diversity, dominance, evenness and carbon in order to achieve the main objective. The results reveal a normal reverse J-shaped, which is an indicator of increased seedling populations, active regeneration and recruitment across the reserves hence indicating a steady and expanding communities in the woodlands. However, the forests will physiognomically change. This is because analysis of the mature tree cohorts against the seedling and young tree cohorts indicate that the species profiles are in transition for a greater change in terms of structure. The study suggests that the current scenarios will compromise sustainability of Miombo woodlands species. Therefore, it is vital that urgent attention and interventions are done to address the current situation.

Book excerpt: Miombo woodlands stretch across Southern Africa in a belt from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the west to Mozambique in the east. The miombo region covers an area of around 2.4 million km. In some areas, miombo has been highly degraded as a result of human use (southern Malawi and parts of Zimbabwe), while in others, it remains relatively intact (such as in parts of northern Mozambique, and in isolated areas of Angola and the DRC). From a conventional forester's perspective, miombo is fundamentally uninteresting. It supports relatively few good commercial timber species. The management of commercial species has been problematic. The best areas were logged over long ago. Except in a few areas, remaining commercially viable stocks are relatively small and difficult to access. Public forestry institutions have, for the most part, failed to put in place effective management systems for forests, preferring instead to limit their role to regulation and revenue collection, rather than to management per se. The objectives of this paper are threefold, and the paper is structured around these objectives. First, in section two, the paper describes some of opportunities for improving the use and management of miombo woodlands. Second, in section three, outline some of the barriers which are preventing households, communities, and countries from adopting better and more sustainable woodland management practices. In section four, by exploring some of the policy opportunities for removing these barriers, with the objective of strengthening miombo's contribution to reducing risk and vulnerability of poor rural households through sustainable forest management.
