Book Synopsis Fragmentation of Resource Management on the South East Arm of Lake Malawi by : Steve Donda
Download or read book Fragmentation of Resource Management on the South East Arm of Lake Malawi written by Steve Donda and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southeast arm of Africa's Lake Malawi and its catchment provide interdependent benefits and livelihoods to its users, in particular the poor who draw upon on the various resources (fish, land, water, forests, wildlife, etc.) in the area. Unfortunately, management of these resources remains fragmented, resulting in suboptimal social, economic, and ecological outcomes. This book demonstrates the value of an inter-disciplinary approach in management of the southeast arm of the lake. It is one of seven case studies under the DARMA (Defragmenting African Resource Management in Southern Africa) project. (Series: Defragmenting African Resource Management [DARMA] - Vol. 3) [Subject: Natural Resource Management, Marine Science, Fisheries Studies, Environmental Studies, African Studies]
Book Synopsis Sustainable Development Strategies by : Stephen Bass
Download or read book Sustainable Development Strategies written by Stephen Bass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a cornerstone resource for a wide range of organizations and individuals concerned with sustainable development at national or local levels, as well as for international organizations concerned with supporting such development. Whilst the focus is on integrated strategies for sustainable development, the approaches and methods covered are equally relevant to poverty reduction, environmental and sectoral strategies, programme development and review. Agenda 21 called for all countries to develop sustainable development strategies. For such strategies to be effective there needs to be a real commitment. In every country, government at all levels, the private sector, and civil society, must work together in a true partnership, in transparent ways which enable genuine stakeholder participation. The necessary mechanisms and processes need to be coordinated to enable continuous learning and improvement. This resource book provides flexible, non-prescriptive guidance on how to develop, assess and implement national sustainable development strategies. It sets out principles and ideas on process and methods, and suggests how these can be used. It is based on an analysis of past and current practice, drawing directly from experience in both developed and developing countries. Following a discussion of the nature and challenges of sustainable development and the need for strategic responses to them, the heart of the book covers the main tasks in strategy processes. Individual chapters offer a rich range of guidance, ideas and case studies.

Book Synopsis Innovations as Key to the Green Revolution in Africa by : Andre Bationo
Download or read book Innovations as Key to the Green Revolution in Africa written by Andre Bationo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 1363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa can achieve self sufficiency in food production through adoption of innovations in the agriculture sector. Numerous soil fertility and crop production technologies have been generated through research, however, wide adoption has been low. African farmers need better technologies, more sustainable practices, and fertilizers to improve and sustain their crop productivity and to prevent further degradation of agricultural lands. The agricultural sector also needs to be supported by functional institutions and policies that will be able to respond to emerging challenges of globalization and climate change.
Book Synopsis Rural Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction Policies by : Frank Ellis
Download or read book Rural Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction Policies written by Frank Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new collection of contributions brings together current thinking on poverty reduction and rural livelihoods in developing countries. As well as leading economists in the field such as Frank Ellis and Chris Barrett, there are a number of contributors from developing countries themselves. The book examines both macroeconomic and microeconomic phenomena and contains wide range of case studies. Skilfully exposing the gap that exists between the rhetoric of poverty reduction strategies in capital cities and the practice of public sector delivery in rural areas, this key text will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers in the fields of rural development, rural livelihoods, poverty reduction strategies and Sub-Saharan Africa development as well as advisors and practitioners in international organizations.

Book Synopsis Community-Based Natural Resource Management in Southern Africa by : Center for African Studies at the University of Florida
Download or read book Community-Based Natural Resource Management in Southern Africa written by Center for African Studies at the University of Florida and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is a compelling concept - if people are allowed to be custodians of their resources, better management of the resources will result. CBNRM is much more complex and challenging than has commonly been understood, but can provide a way to achieve a more equitable and sustainable approach to the use of natural resources. This book has a focus on Southern Africa. It is aimed at students of natural resource management including undergraduates, conservation practitioners, and development-sector implementing agents. It is theoretically grounded, but has a major applied focus with respect to understanding the why, what, and how of CBNRM in order to more effectively guide natural resource management. It is not a manual with explanatory details about implementation measures; rather, it helps the reader to understand the complexity of CBNRM, and provides a guide to other resources that will assist in enhancing learning. Part I consists of ten chapters. After introducing the CBNRM concept, consideration is given to the following: History as a Determinant of Progress; Economic Foundations; Well-Being, Livelihoods and Business; Institutions and Governance; Stakeholder Analysis; Adaptive Management; Capacity Development and Learning; and Communication for Effective Implementation. Part II is devoted to eight case studies from the Southern Africa region that illustrates some of the issues considered in Part I. They are included to provide material that can be used as site-specific examples and teaching aids to complement general discussion of the issues.
