Asteroseismology is the science of variable and pulsating stars. Every six months CoAst publishes a newsletter with papers on ongoing research projects. Volume 156 contains publications on a wide variety of pulsating stars at diverse evolutionary stages that have been analysed on the basis of photometrical or numerical techniques. These include a paper on the first detections of the CoRoT satellite, which started to operate almost one year ago. The last article in this issue contains a report of the European Helio- and Asteroseismology Network (HELAS) where activities and future plans concerning the european asteroseismology are presented.

The aim of the FAMIAS / DAS packages is to enable user-friendly access to state of the art methods for asteroseismology. Successful asteroseismology of stars on the main sequence hotter than the sun is highly dependent on the knowledge of the surface structure of pulsational modes, by means of mode identification. Mode identification can be derived from modeling the luminosity variations of the star in several photometric filters and intensity variations in the profile of absorption lines. FAMIAS is a sophisticated tool for the analysis of spectroscopic and photometric time series to find pulsational modes and the corresponding pulsational quantum numbers: the degree l and the azimutal order m. The database DAS contains a well documented library of light curves and spectroscopic time series data of selected pulsating stars. Together with FAMIAS, it provides a complete package of tools for mode identification to researchers as well as to students, working on the field of asteroseismology. This volume is the printed version of the two manuals and is funded by the EU.

The chemical enrichment of our Milky Way and of the Universe withallelementsheavierthanlithiumoriginatesintheinteriorsofstars.Stars arethe tracersofthe dynamics ofthe Universe,gravitationallyimplying much more than meets the eye. Stars ionize the interstellar medium and re-ionized the early intergalactic medium. Understanding stellar structure and evolution is fundamental. While stellar structure and evolution are understood in general terms, we lack important physical ingredients, despite extensive research during recent decades.Classicalspectroscopy,photometry,astrometryandinterferometryof stars have traditionally been used as observational constraints to deduce the internal stellar physics. Unfortunately, these types of observations only allow the tuning of the basic common physics laws under stellar conditions with relatively poor precision. The situation is even more worrisome for unknown aspects of the physics and dynamics in stars. These are usually dealt with by using parameterised descriptions of, e.g., the treatments of convection, rotation,angularmomentumtransport,theequationofstate,atomicdi?usion andsettlingofelements,magneto-hydrodynamicalprocesses,andmore.There is a dearth of observational constraints on these processes, thus solar values areoftenassignedtothem.Yetitishardtoimaginethatonesetofparameters is appropriate for the vast range of stars.
