Book Synopsis Identification Guide to Southern African Grasses by : Lyn Fish
Download or read book Identification Guide to Southern African Grasses written by Lyn Fish and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grasses are very important features of the landscape and occur to a greater or lesser extent in all of the vegetation types of southern African. The importance of good grazing grasses for both wild and domesticated animals is well known. Some species are indicators of good or bad veld management and are useful to farmers and conservators. Crop farmers have to deal with undesirable grasses in their fields and the custodians of our indigenous vegetation need to correctly identify any alien invaders. This identification guide relies primarily on the use of keys and descriptive information to aid the user in identifying a grass species. It contains some of the best information needed to identify southern African grasses. Keys to grass genera and species are provided, and in some instances also keys to easily confused taxa. For each species, a combination of useful characters is provided, and where applicable, line drawings of the spikelet or parts thereof accompany the identification keys. Species descriptions and distribution maps are hugely important and add to the identification of grasses."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenes of starvation have drawn the world's attention to Africa's agricultural and environmental crisis. Some observers question whether this continent can ever hope to feed its growing population. Yet there is an overlooked food resource in sub-Saharan Africa that has vast potential: native food plants. When experts were asked to nominate African food plants for inclusion in a new book, a list of 30 species grew quickly to hundreds. All in all, Africa has more than 2,000 native grains and fruitsâ€""lost" species due for rediscovery and exploitation. This volume focuses on native cereals, including: African rice, reserved until recently as a luxury food for religious rituals. Finger millet, neglected internationally although it is a staple for millions. Fonio (acha), probably the oldest African cereal and sometimes called "hungry rice." Pearl millet, a widely used grain that still holds great untapped potential. Sorghum, with prospects for making the twenty-first century the "century of sorghum." Tef, in many ways ideal but only now enjoying budding commercial production. Other cultivated and wild grains. This readable and engaging book dispels myths, often based on Western bias, about the nutritional value, flavor, and yield of these African grains. Designed as a tool for economic development, the volume is organized with increasing levels of detail to meet the needs of both lay and professional readers. The authors present the available information on where and how each grain is grown, harvested, and processed, and they list its benefits and limitations as a food source. The authors describe "next steps" for increasing the use of each grain, outline research needs, and address issues in building commercial production. Sidebars cover such interesting points as the potential use of gene mapping and other "high-tech" agricultural techniques on these grains. This fact-filled volume will be of great interest to agricultural experts, entrepreneurs, researchers, and individuals concerned about restoring food production, environmental health, and economic opportunity in sub-Saharan Africa. Book Synopsis Beef From Grass by : Namukolo Mukutu
Download or read book Beef From Grass written by Namukolo Mukutu and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of work as an Animal Husbandry Extension worker, Namukolo Mukutu often had requests from intending farmers on how to start a beef farm, where to farm, and how to farm. Already established farmers, on the other hand, also often approached him for advice with specific problems, usually relating to “how to”. The notes compiled in this book are intended for both these groups of farmers. The message or technologies in the first part (Chapters 1-27) are clear and easy to understand. This, however, is what is commonly taught in schools of animal husbandry. It is essentially the easier part. The more difficult part, and what is not taught in schools of animal husbandry has to do with how the cattle interact with their environment to assure sustainable availability of forage on which they depend. When this relationship is properly understood and put into practice, cattle productivity is enhanced and even continue to increase. Namukolo Mukutu makes this the cornerstone of the book. Sustainable animal husbandry systems are recommended for all soil and vegetation types of Zambia. The notes, provide a very simple and practical way in which the starting point of beef farming, the estimation of carrying capacity can be carried out, out of which the herd size and systems of animal husbandry suitable for the area can be designed and implemented.

Book Synopsis Southern African Wild Flowers - Jewels of the Veld by : John Manning
Download or read book Southern African Wild Flowers - Jewels of the Veld written by John Manning and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern African Wild Flowers takes readers on a journey through the diverse landscapes of the subregion, showcasing the unique richness of its wild flowers along the way. Each chapter focuses on a specific region, highlighting the most beautiful, interesting and rare plants occurring there. The journey begins at the Zambezi river and then moves down the eastern part of southern Africa through the well-watered ‘land of plenty’. From here, the reader is taken through the splendours of the Cape fynbos and then northwards, to end in the parched ‘thirstlands’ of the west. Beautiful full-colour photographs by well-known botanical photographer Colin Paterson-Jones celebrate the flora of the region, while the authoritative text reveals insights into the plants themselves, their origins, interactions with other living organisms, and their often remarkable adaptation to sometimes hostile environments. Emphasis is given to the context in which the flowers grow; and the changing vegetation and landscapes are featured throughout, displaying the extraordinary diversity within southern Africa.
