Book excerpt: This book describes the application of mathematical and fundamental theory as stated in the relevant standards, namely EYM and NDS. Timber is one of the important building materials in the field of engineering, other than concrete and steel. However, there is still a lot of unexplored knowledge about timber, including how timber connections are made. One of the main types of timber connection is mortise and tenon. Mortise and tenon are widely seen as one of the most important traditional timber structural joint. In order to understand the load-carrying capacity and performance of the structural mortise and tenon joint, the existing theoretical background of timber joint design is made as a reference. Current equations applicable in estimating the load-carrying capacity of timber joint uses the European Yield Model (EYM). Therefore, the main aim of this book is to share the basic design knowledge, inclusive of safety factor limitations (as engineering main factor) in structural design.
Book Synopsis The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees by : CABI
Download or read book The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees written by CABI and published by CABI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees provides an extensive overview of 300 of the world's most important forest trees. Tropical, subtropical, temperate and boreal trees of major economic importance are included, covering tree species used in agroforestry practices around the world. Many of the species covered are considered to be multipurpose trees with uses extending beyond timber alone; the land uses such as watershed protection or provision of windbreaks, and non-wood uses such as the production of medicines, resins, food and forage, are also listed. Comprehensive information is presented on each tree's importance, with a summary of the main characteristics of the species, its potential for agroforestry use and any disadvantages it possesses. The tree's botanical features such as habit, stem form, foliage, inflorescence, flower and fruit characters and phenology are covered in detail with over 70 color plate pictures to aid identification. Also included are specific sections devoted to pests and diseases, distribution and silvicultural characteristics and practices, including seed sowing, nursery care, planting, thinning, and harvesting. In addition to the wealth of information detailed, based on datasheets from CABI's Forestry Compendium, selected references for further reading are provided for each entry, making this book an essential reference work for forestry students, researchers and practitioners.

Book Synopsis Kuala Lumpur Street Names: A Guide to Their Meanings and Histories by : Mariana Isa
Download or read book Kuala Lumpur Street Names: A Guide to Their Meanings and Histories written by Mariana Isa and published by Marshall Cavendish International Asia Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Street names are a many-layered thing – crystallising various eras of history and celebrating multiple generations of people. As the federal capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur’s street names reflect its rich mix of cultures and its journey from colonial past to nationhood. This encyclopedic A-to-Z guide explains the meanings and origins of KL’s street names – those named after notable persons, after prominent landmarks, after local flora and fauna, etc. Themed street names within a particular area are also identified, e.g. the cluster of streets in Taman Sri Bahtera named after traditional Malay boats. Of particular interest is the renaming of streets over the years, ranging from literal translations (e.g. “Church Road” becoming “Jalan Gereja”), to completely new names (“Parry Road” to “Jalan P Ramlee”). Drawing on extensive research into the National Archives, the authors present their wealth of findings in a concise and easy-to-read way that will engage readers of all levels.
