Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I speak the truth, not so much as I would, but as much as I dare...."-- Montaigne "All cruel people describe themselves as paragons of frankness.'" -- Tennessee Williams Truth and deception--like good and evil--have long been viewed as diametrically opposed and unreconcilable. Yet, few people can honestly claim they never lie. In fact, deception is practiced habitually in day-to-day life--from the polite compliment that doesn't accurately relay one's true feelings, to self-deception about one's own motivations. What fuels the need for people to intricately construct lies and illusions about their own lives? If deceptions are unconscious, does it mean that we are not responsible for their consequences? Why does self-deception or the need for illusion make us feel uncomfortable? Taking into account the sheer ubiquity and ordinariness of deception, this interdisciplinary work moves away from the cut-and-dried notion of duplicity as evil and illuminates the ways in which deception can also be understood as a adaptive response to the demands of living with others. The book articulates the boundaries between unethical and adaptive deception demonstrating how some lies serve socially approved goals, while others provoke distrust and condemnation. Throughout, the volume focuses on the range of emotions--from feelings of shame, fear, or envy, to those of concern and compassion--that motivate our desire to deceive ourselves and others. Providing an interdisciplinary exploration of the widespread phenomenon of lying and deception, this volume promotes a more fully integrated understanding of how people function in their everyday lives. Case illustrations, humor and wit, concrete examples, and even a mock television sitcom script bring the ideas to life for clinical practitioners, behavioral scientists, and philosophers, and for students in these realms.

This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The habit of lying is a toxic practice that can eventually break down a strong relationship. Healthy and vibrant relationships are built on honesty. No relationship can survive, let alone thrive, without openness and integrity. Relationships that are healthy, cheerful and balanced are characterized by real people who are in touch with their authentic selves. It is hard to give what you don't have; honesty begins with you. If you expect the trust of someone, you must come clean and demonstrate honesty and integrity from the beginning and maintain it throughout the entire relationship. When trust is lost in a relationship, it gives way for distrust and misunderstanding. Deceit can be one of the quickest ways to strip that needed trust from a relationship. It is a common problem with many people nowadays affecting their happiness and choices. The potential damage and complications that surround lying are things to consider when telling lies. For a relationship to work there should be a balance of effort from both parties; they must give an equal commitment to it. This balance of effort creates the feeling of trust and understanding that strengthened a relationship. On the other hand, lying disturbs the flow of this natural equilibrium and causes an imbalance in the relationship. For the victim of a lie, the experience can be devastating and make them feel as though they have put their all their heart on the line, only to be disappointed by a deceptive partner. Lies told in close relationships will cause a great deal of pain, heartache, and undermine the intimacy and ties you have with your partner. Lying does nothing good for a relationship, it only prolongs issues and makes situation get worse in the long run. No matter which way you may try to spin it, lying doesn't solve anything; it causes people to act differently which tend to undermine the bond that holds relationships together. When you lie, you hurt your mind and keep yourself out of touch with reality. You disguise and project deceit and falsehood to your partner. He/she may not know that you are telling lies, but right within, you know the truth because you can only lie to people but not yourself. The guilt of deceit will hang on unless you decide to change and come out clean. If you wish to develop a healthy relationship you have to treat your partner with respect and dignity, you have to stop lying and live uprightly. Lying won't solve problems. It can only provide momentary satisfaction which will fade away with time. It may cover the shame and the guilt for the moment, but will not render a realistic solution to the problem. The moment you realize this vital point the good for you to seek to eradicate lies from your life before it wreaks uncontrollable havoc. Lying hurts the ones we care about the most, sometimes when we lie, we do so to get ourselves out of a sticky situation. We may not mean to harm our partners. But in reality, lies do hurt. By concealing the truth, you are depriving your partner vital information, and when the truth is known, they will feel betrayed by you. The feeling of betrayer can lead to a breakdown in communication which can create a crack in the cohesiveness of a relation. Love doesn't hurt, but lies do; and the moment you start telling lies, it is no longer love. Honesty improves our vitality, endears us to friends and loved ones. It engenders confidence, strengthens our willpower and represents us in the best way for others to emulate. Being honest with yourself is a great way to build trust, rise above life challenges, gain self-acceptance, and develop genuineness for a healthy relationship. This book offers a sound and reliable roadmap to building trust and emotional intimacy in a relationship. You will learn about what you can do to promote an atmosphere of honesty around you and generate a steady flow of trust in your relationship.

Book excerpt: As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption—even murder and genocide—generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, best-selling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie. He focuses on "white" lies—those lies we tell for the purpose of sparing people discomfort—for these are the lies that most often tempt us. And they tend to be the only lies that good people tell while imagining that they are being good in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ARTFUL LIAR is a fictionalized memoir about disloyalty and duplicity written in the third-person as a series of stand-alone vignettes based on the author’s imagination and experiences. At the end of each vignette are five meaningful learning messages, gleaned through the life tests of that story. THE ARTFUL LIAR presents an examined life to the reader. It tells one woman’s journey and her reflections on surviving deception and betrayal. It’s meant to be a gift to women of all ages everywhere who struggle with dishonesty, cheating, infidelity and relationship loss. It’s a call to every woman to be strong, to pay attention, to listen to her gut, to rid herself of betrayers and deceivers, and to claim what she wants. Reviews for THE ARTFUL LIAR: “In THE ARTFUL LIAR, Cynthia Friedlander has given us the compelling story of a decade-long relationship between a charming sociopathic liar and the successful, talented and intelligent woman who loves him. When she at last discovers – and can no longer explain away or deny – the extent of his lies, she must learn to fight to regain her self-respect, self-esteem, and her very existence. THE ARTFUL LIAR ultimately becomes a heart-wrenching cautionary tale for modern, urban women of all ages.” –Pat Carr, author of ONE PAGE AT A TIME “Cynthia Friedlander’s THE ARTFUL LIAR delves into the story of a betrayed woman with such depth and honesty, one can almost feel her pain as she becomes aware of the extent of her betrayer’s lies. She must come to terms with the knowledge that a man she loved and shared her life with had deceived her for years, and Friedlander pours her soul into her writing of the woman’s pain and, eventual healing. Friedlander provides a service to the many people who will find comfort in seeing themselves and their stories reflected in this book.” –Ellen Schnier, LCSW, Psychotherapist “What a beautiful and graceful telling of an extraordinary story. I could not stop turning the pages and anticipating what would happen next - what great storytelling is all about. Surely this book is going to touch many lives. So many of us have been deceived by one(s) we loved; this retelling of how the author overcame, regained her confidence, and moved on was what really made the book for me. I am also very impressed with the guiding messages. Such a gift for anyone who is in the valley and trying to climb back up the mountain.” –Elise Davis-McFarland, PhD, former VP, Trident Technical College, Certified Speech-Language Pathologist “Thank you for giving us THE ARTFUL LIAR. This book stirred my emotions and interest at all times. I could feel pain and anger. What a strong and courageous woman. THE ARTFUL LIAR will help many women who have found themselves in a deceptive relationship.” –Florence Schmelzer, Native New Yorker, Relationship Survivor, Former Manager, New York Convention and Visitors Bureau

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and unsettling look at the nature of love and deception Is it possible to love well without lying? At least since Socrates's discourse on love in Plato's Symposium, philosophers have argued that love can lead us to the truth—about ourselves and the ones we love. But in the practical experience of erotic love—and perhaps especially in marriage—we find that love and lies often work hand in hand, and that it may be difficult to sustain long-term romantic love without deception, both of oneself and of others. Drawing on contemporary philosophy, psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience, his own personal experience, and such famed and diverse writers on love as Shakespeare, Stendhal, Proust, Adrienne Rich, and Raymond Carver, Clancy Martin—himself divorced twice and married three times—explores how love, truthfulness, and deception work together in contemporary life and society. He concludes that learning how to love and loving well inevitably requires lying, but also argues that the best love relationships draw us slowly and with difficulty toward honesty and trust. Love and Lies is a relentlessly honest book about the difficulty of love, which is certain to both provoke and entertain.

Book excerpt: Lying is an intrinsic part of our social fabric, but it is also a deeply problematic and misunderstood aspect of what makes us human. Ian Leslie takes us on a fascinating journey that makes us question not only our own relationship to the truth, but also virtually every daily encounter we have. On the way he dissects the history of the lie detector, how parents affect their children's attitude to lying (and vice versa), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, the philosophical ambiguity of telling the truth, Bill Clinton's presentational prowess, Wonder Woman's lasso of truth, and why we should be wary of anyone with more than 150 Facebook friends.Born Liars is thought-provoking, anecdotally driven narrative nonfiction at its best. Ian Leslie's intoxicating blend of anthropology, biology, cultural history, philosophy, and popular psychology belies a serious central message: that humans have evolved and thrived in large part because of their ability to deceive.
