Book Synopsis Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought by : Vijendra K. Boken
Download or read book Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought written by Vijendra K. Boken and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural droughts affect whole societies, leading to higher food costs, threatened economies, and even famine. In order to mitigate such effects, researchers must first be able to monitor them, and then predict them; however no book currently focuses on accurate monitoring or prediction of these devastating kinds of droughts. To fill this void, the editors of Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought have assembled a team of expert contributors from all continents to make a global study, describing biometeorological models and monitoring methods for agricultural droughts. These models and methods note the relationships between precipitation, soil moisture, and crop yields, using data gathered from conventional and remote sensing techniques. The coverage of the book includes probabilistic models and techniques used in America, Europe and the former USSR, Africa, Asia, and Australia, and it concludes with coverage of climate change and resultant shifts in agricultural productivity, drought early warning systems, and famine mitigation. This will be an essential collection for those who must advise governments or international organizations on the current scope, likelihood, and impact of agricultural droughts. Book Synopsis Managing Weather and Climate Risks in Agriculture by : Mannava VK Sivakumar
Download or read book Managing Weather and Climate Risks in Agriculture written by Mannava VK Sivakumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-10 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an International Workshop held in New Delhi, India, this work should be of interest to all organizations and agencies interested in improved risk management in agriculture. In many parts of the world, weather and climate are one of the biggest production risks and uncertainty factors impacting on agricultural systems performance and management. Both structural and non-structural measures can be used to reduce the impacts of the variability (including extremes) of climate resources on crop production.
Download or read book Agrometeorology written by J. Seemann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agrometeorology is a comparatively young science. The beginnings of agrometeorological work came in the 20's of this century, when agrometeorology was a working branch of climatology. In the years following 1950 it then developed widely to an independent science. In this process, agrome teorology has not only gained a vast knowledge of the influence of meteorological conditions on plants and livestock in agriculture and damage prevention, but additionally evolved new advisory methods which are of great practical use in agriculture. Up to the present time there has been practically no specific training for an agrometeorologist. Agrometeoro logists are drawn, according to their training, from the ranks of general meteorology or from agriculture and its related biological disciplines. They must, therefore, them selves gather the knowledge for their agrometeorological work and combine for themselves the complex of agrome teorology from biological and meteorological information. This is usuaIIy far from easy, as the relevant literature is scattered among the most widely differing journals, partly in little-known foreign languages, and is thus very difficult of access. Comprehensive writings are to be found only in very few partial fields of agrometeorology. The subject of training problems has thus been treated as of utmost importance at the meetings ofthe Commission for Agrometeorology (CAgM) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), especially as agrometeorology has won such great significance and useful ness not only in the so-called underdeveloped countries in advancing a more productive agriculture, but also in coun tries whose agricultural standard is already high.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Climate Change and Agroecosystems by : Cynthia Rosenzweig
Download or read book Handbook of Climate Change and Agroecosystems written by Cynthia Rosenzweig and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is no longer merely projected to occur in the indeterminate future. It has already begun to be manifested in the weather regimes affecting agroecosystems, food production, and rural livelihoods in many regions around the world. It is a real and growing challenge to the world at large and in particular to the scientific community, which is called upon with increasing urgency to respond effectively. The second volume in the ICP Series on Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation, and Mitigation, Handbook of Climate Change and Agroecosystems: Global and Regional Aspects and Implications is published jointly by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America and Imperial College Press. The ongoing series is dedicated to elucidating the actual and potential impacts of climate change, and to formulating effective responses to this global challenge. It is designed to inform, spur, and integrate the work of leading researchers in the major regions of the world, and to further international cooperation in this crucial field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate, climate change, climate fluctuations and climatic trends are only a few of the terms used today, in not only conferences, scientific symposia and workshops, but also parliaments and in discussions throughout society. To climatologists these terms may be well known; to the vast majority of people, however, they are new, and they require definition and explanation. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) inherited an interest and involvement in the studies of climate and climate change from its predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization (IMo), which was established in 1873. By 1929 the IMO had set up a Commission for Climatology to deal with matters related to climate studies. When, in 1950, the World Meteorological Organization assumed the mantle of the IMO, it retained the commission which, among other responsibilities, had already recognized the need for the definition and explana tion of terms used in climatology. It must also be said that much of what we now know about climate derives from the scientific and technical programmes co ordinated by IMO and now, to a much greater extent, by WMO. In 1979, the First World Climate Conference made an assessment of the status of knowledge of climate and climate variability, and recommended the establishment of a World Climate Programme. This recommendation was fully endorsed by the Eighth World Meteorological Congress, and the World Climate Programme was subse quently established by WMO in co-operation with the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Book Synopsis Comprehensive analysis of the disaster risk reduction system for the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Comprehensive analysis of the disaster risk reduction system for the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to highlight the current strengths of the institutional DRR system for agriculture in Azerbaijan as well as indicate existing gaps and capacity needs to further enhance it. A comprehensive assessment is conducted, which includes a general overview of the country’s agricultural sector and outlines the most frequent natural hazards that are impacting the sector. It is followed by an analysis of the existing legal, policy and institutional structure and discusses various components of the system, including e.g. the functioning of early warning systems, assessments of disaster risks, post-disaster needs assessments, including damages and losses assessments and the availability of agricultural insurance for farmers. It concludes by providing recommendations for capacity building interventions to strengthen the current system to reduce the adverse impacts of natural hazards, in particular, floods, landslides and droughts, and climate change on agriculture in Azerbaijan.
