Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Commerce of Japan Since the Restoration, 1869-1900 First Period (1868 - After the reluctant Opening of the Empire to the new commerce, a decade elapsed before the Imperial authority was restored to its former glory, and Japan became fully convinced of the superiority of Western civilization and of the advantages of maintaining commer cial relations with foreign countries. In spite of anti foreign agitation, commercial treaties were concluded with eleven countries during these ten years, and foreign trade attained considerable proportions. Though in some respects important, the period was only introductory to the new era of Japan's foreign commerce, which may properly be said to have begun with the year 1868, that date being also a landmark in the political and social history of the nation. Passing, therefore, from the early conditions of trade, let us begin with the opening Of the new era, in many respects so Significant. Book excerpt: "In this history of Japanese involvement in northeast China, the author argues that Japan’s military seizure of Manchuria in September 1931 was founded on three decades of infiltration of the area. This incremental empire-building and its effect on Japan are the focuses of this book. The principal agency in the piecemeal growth of Japanese colonization was the South Manchurian Railway Company, and by the mid-1920s Japan had a deeply entrenched presence in Manchuria and exercised a dominant economic and political influence over the area. Japanese colonial expansion in Manchuria also loomed large in Japanese politics, military policy, economic development, and foreign relations and deeply influenced many aspects of Japan’s interwar history."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prominent Americans: Interested in Japan and Prominent Japanese in America The first felling of friendship between the United States and Japan began with the visit to Japan of Commodore Perry, of the American navy. Ever since that memorable voyage Japan has felt that the awakening of the Far East, and the great benefit she herself has received from her acceptance of Western civilization, were due to the stimulus and inspiration given by the United States. In the half century that has followed, the friendship of the two nations has been strengthened by means of a rapidly developing commerce. No American should be ignorant of the fact that among the people of Japan there is a sincere and deep-rooted friendship for the people of the United States. "Japan and America" was founded in this city in July, 1901, and the "Japanese-American Commercial Weekly" in December, 1900, for the purpose of helping to maintain and promote friendly and commercial relations between America and Japan. They are endeavoring to draw the peoples of the two countries closer together in all their relations of life - in trade, in art, in literature - and in sympathy with each other in the broad purpose, shared by both in common, of world-civilization. Both nations, it should be remembered, are engaged upon the solution of the same grave and important problem - the civilization and uplifting of inferior races. That the efforts of this periodical have been widely appreciated is shown by the fact that "Japan and America" and the "Japanese-American Commercial Weekly" now have a large and in creasing circulation in the United States and in Japan. We here present portraits and biographical sketches of prominent Americans who are interested in Japan, and of Japanese who are interested in America. The Americans who are most interested in Japan are well known to the older people in Japan, but not to the younger generation. It is our purpose to make known to this class such of the successful Americans as they ought to know. In like manner, the sketches tell Americans of some of the successful men of Japan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan and Its Trade The object of this series is double. In the first place it is to supply in a compact form to managers, clerks, and agents of commercial firms in all parts of the globe accurate information about the commerce, resources, and needs of the principal countries of the world; the second, and equally important, purpose of the series is to supply to teachers and students in technical schools, colleges, and commercial Universities throughout the British Empire and the United States of America what we may perhaps call guide-books to the wealth of modern nations. No intelligent observer of commercial progress in Germany during the last decade can have failed to mark an equally rapid and simultaneous progress in the descriptive literature of industry and commerce. Every University seems to have entered into the competition, and in Germany, at any rate, a teacher of practical economics is seldom at a loss for a book; he is more likely to be embarrassed by profusion than by scarcity. In America the production of monographs upon commercial subjects has been enormous, but these monographs, whatever their scientific merits - and they often exhibit a most laborious research - are not often suited to the uses of commercial instruction. Still less are they likely to deserve or win a place on the miserable bookshelf which too often satisfies a great mercantile or manufacturing house. It is no doubt a mistake for the manufacturer of books to preach to the manufacturer of things; but the best writers on economic questions are those who combine with practical instincts a broad and scientific grasp of commerce and a power of exposition. Such writers do not lecture a business man on the conduct of his business. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
