Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistles of Peter This attempt to expound the Epistles of Peter and the Epistle of Jude is the attempt of one who has spent life chiefly in the work of a preacher and pastor, not in the work of a professional exegete. Such a mode of life ought, perhaps, to have deterred from the attempt. But, however that may be, the writer may be permitted to say that, while aiming to adapt the work to the wants of the people, he is not without hope that some of his brethren in the ministry, who, though not exegetes by profession, have been more or less accustomed to the study of the Greek, may find at least something to aid, even them, in the better understanding of these remarkable Epistles. In his treatment of the very diflicult, and, as he cannot but think, greatly misunderstood passage concerning the preaching of Christ to the Spirits in prison, he acknowledges his indebtedness to S. C. Bartlett, D. D., President of Dartmouth College, for what manifestly is the true view of the Greek. Owing to what has been denominated the new movement in theology so far as that movement pertains to the subject of a second probation - this part of Peter's First Epistle (3: 18 - 20) is worthy of very careful study. Another topic now command ing much interest is the relation of wives to their husbands, and upon this the writer has ventured to express some general thoughts, besides endeavoring to educe the meaning of the verses bearing upon the subject. It is an interesting fact, that of the two apostles who have given practical precepts concerning the relation of husband and wife, the one was married and the other was unmarried. Sarcastic allusions to Paul's bachelorship are, therefore, less worthy of the source from which they flow. Here Paul the unmarried and Peter the married are one. In the Introduction to the Second Epistle of Peter will be found a brief consideration of the question recently sprung upon the attention of Chris tian scholars by Rev. Edwin A. Abbott, D. D., of England. It is claimed that a com parison of the Second Epistle with the writings of Josephus yields a new and unanswer able argument against the authority of the Epistle. It is a question of much importance, and will undoubtedly receive a yet more thorough examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Peter Verse 3 According to His great mercy. I am glad and grateful that the pregnant passage is prefaced by this word. The regenerated soul is just enveloped in great mercy. Now mercy implies sympathy. We cannot have mercy without sympathy. Without mercy we cannot have leniency; but leniency is only thin, pinched fruit compared with the fat, qcy fruit Of mercy. Without sympathy we may have giving, but unsympathetic giving is like the cold, outer threshold, while mercy is like a glowing hearthstone. Mercy implies sympathy. GO a step further. Sympathy suggests the choicest companionship, the rarest Of all fellow ships. Where there is true sympathy, there is the most exquisite companionship. If then, our God and Father enswathes us in great mercy, He visits in the sweetest fellowships. Therefore in the redeemed life there can be no loneliness, for in the Father's presence all possible loneliness is destroyed. The mercy which implies companionship accompanies me as a dynamic from my faintest breathing as a babe-christian on to the consummation when I shall have become a full-grown man in Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Catholic Epistles With regard to the Second Epistle of peter, doubts have been entertained by some as to its authenticity. It appears that it was not at first so widely known as his First Epistle; and this was probably the reason why there were some during the first three centuries who did not regard it as genuine. But it has been quoted as a part of Scripture by some Of the earliest Fathers, and fully acknowledged as authentic by those of the fourth and succeeding centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Epistle of Peter: Revised d104, With Introduction and Commentary All those commentators on the Epistle from Whom the author had any reason to believe that help might be obtained have been carefully consulted. His obligations are specially great to Bengel, Wiesinger, and Professor Salmond of Aberdeen. From several of the less strictly critical expositions of the Epistle, also, he has in various ways and degrees received help, particularly from the classic work of Leighton, and from the Expository Lectures of Professor John Brown of Edinburgh, and Dr. John Lillie of Kingston, New York. In the discussion of passages susceptible of different interpretations, only views of the meaning which seemed to have at least a moderate degree of likelihood have'been dealt with in the Commentary, or indeed, as a rule, even mentioned, - the book being intended, not as a storehouse of curiosities or whimsical conceits, but as an aid to the practical study of Scripture. An endeavour has been made also to avoid loading the pages with needless lists of the names of scholars holding the various positions. Names have been mentioned only when they seemed to be in them selves to a certain extent arguments, or to afford something of interesting or helpful illustration. On questions con nected with the specialties of Hellenistic Greek, the New Testament Grammars of Winer and Alexander Buttmann are frequently referred to (the references being made to the English translations by Moulton and Thayer), occasionally also the excellent little work of Sheldon Green. For the grammar of classical Greek, Jelf and Donaldson have been used. There are no formal Dissertations or Excursus. Several of the discussions, in particular those on the exegesis of chap.' iii. 19, 20, and chap. Iv. 6, are considerably detailed; but the arrangement of the book - in which the text is printed, not over the expository notes, but at the beginning - permitted these to be kept in their place in the Commentary. In the Table of Contents a reference is made to matters treated with special fulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Commentary Upon the First Epistle of St. Peter, Vol. 1: And Other Expository Works While I was thus employed, I observed that the confusion which many have complained of in the archbishop's method, and which I myself really thought matter of. Some just complaint too, was fre quently the consequence of omitting the numeral marks, which should denote the subordination of heads, and this where some of them are inserted, as if on purpose to increase the perplexity. And it also very frequently results from the neglect of giving a proper view at first of the method proposed, and which was worst of all, in not a few places, from placing the number of the head, instead of the head itself. This, perhaps, was done with design in the first copy, to save the trouble of writing it over again; but it is extremely inconvenient to the reader, as it most naturally leads him to mistake the first sentence of the enlargement, for the head it is in tended to illustrate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. The work of a highly esteemed New Testament scholar, this commentary on I Peter has unparalleled breadth and depth and reflects a lifetime of devoted scholarship. Leonhard Goppelt presents here a rich exposition of I Peter that New Testament students and scholars will consult time and again with great profit. Goppelt's detailed section- by-section and phrase-by-phrase commentary is preceded by a complete, up-to-date bibliography and an extended introduction. Scattered throughout the commentary are special notes and excursuses on several themes and issues related to the text of the letter. The footnotes contain a wealth of bibliographical information, which has been updated by translator John Alsup, and an appendix by Alsup provides a brief appreciative survey of the life and works of Leonhard Goppelt. Besides its unusually thorough treatment of the biblical text and the history of interpretation, what distinguishes this commentary is Goppelt's balanced focus on I Peter as a document setting forth social-ethical guidelines for Christians not just in the first century but in today's world as well. A scholarly Christian classic, this monumental commentary on I Peter will find a welcome place in seminary courses (New Testament, social ethics), in theological libraries, and in pastors' studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament: The Epistles of Peter and Jude The disciples, would have, in that they had forsaken all for Christ's sake (matt. Xix. In still more marked lines does the picture of his distinctive character stand out in the background of Christ's passion, when he first in vain self confidence promises to the Lord that he would never forsake Him, but would go with im even unto death, and then on the Mount of Olives is unable to watch with Him he wishes, thereupon, to save his Master with the sword, and follows Him even to the court of the high priest, but in sudden cowardice denies Him before the men-servants and maids, and as quickly, feeling the whole weight of his guilt, leaves the judgment-hall in tears. On account of these unquestionably serious vacillations in feeling and conduct, he nevertheless can not be accused of indecision of character. If he showed himself weak on particular occasions, this was the result partly of his sanguine temperament, in which action instantaneously fol lowed on excited feeling, and partly of his great self-confidence, into-which he was betrayed by the consciousness of his own strength. The denial of Christ led to his inward purification; all the more that after His resurrection Christ revealed Him self to Peter first among the apostles. And so to the thrice repeated question of the Lord, if he loved Him more than the others, he returned the answer, humble yet full of faith: Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Discourses on the First Epistle of the Apostle Peter The translation of the Epistle, though prefixed to the Expository Discourses, was written after them, and indeed contains a condensed statement of the result of the Author's investigations. This accounts for the fact that, in an instance or two, the sense given in the translation slightly differs from that commented on in the Exposition. To prevent disappointment it is right to state that the object of the Author has been to produce not so much an original work, as a satisfactory exposition. In his estimate of the duties of an interpreter of Scripture, next to the careful study of the original text, ranks the attentive reading of what has been pub lished for the illustration of it. Under this conviction he has studied the Epis tle, not only without note or comment, but with all the notes and comments with in his reach; and the book he now respectfully lays before the church contains the substance of all that in his thoughts and reading seemed best fitted to illus trate the meaning and promote the objects Of the inspired writer. Of the helps of which he has availed himself, a list is furnished at the close of these prefatory remarks. He has distinguished by an asterisk those to which he has been chiefly indebted.
