Book excerpt: Coming to Stayis the memoir of Mary Dodds Schlick, who in 1950 moved from the Midwest to the Colville Indian Reservation in north central Washington with her husband Bud, a forester for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. For over fifty years, she has maintained a close connection with the Native people of the Columbia River Plateau as a neighbor, journalist, teacher, and master basket maker on the Colville, Warm Springs, and Yakama reservations. These stories take place against a backdrop of change - from the uncertainty caused by federal efforts to terminate reservations in the 1950s through the growth of tribal self-determination that began in the 1970s. Schlick tells us about community and family, celebration and loss, and how she came to stay in the place she now calls home. Mary Dodds Schlickis the author ofColumbia River Basketry: Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth. A master artist in the Oregon Traditional Arts Program, she received an Oregon Governor's Arts Award in 1998.

Book excerpt: Penny Parks is a young girl growing up in the rural south as the daughter of a sharecropper in 1949. Penny comes of age through hard times, hard work and the support of her family. She strives to better herself on the Silver Lear Plantation, working for the Hacketts in their office. She has a talent for cutting horses. Penny falls in love with Smith, the grandson and heir to the farm but is determined to chart her own destiny despite their differences. I too was a sharecroppers daughter. It was a hard time but I wouldnt change it for the world. We were taught at an early age to help out with the family, to work and we knew the love our Dad and Mom shared with us kids. Ruby Fae Corely Very touching story. It is cathartic. I could see a little of my own background growing up on the farm. I think all our lives were so different then than a kid sees now. We were innocent, patriotic, and religious. We played outside a heck of a lot more. We had to be creative. - Tommie Webb

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military occupations and interventions have a gendered impact on both those engaged in occupying, and those whose lands have been occupied. Yet little is known about this gendered impact, in terms of both masculinities and femininities, either historically or in contemporary times. While research in this area has begun to grow since events in Iraq and Afghanistan, this collection helps redress the relative neglect by examining and analysing the impact of occupation on men and women, both occupied and occupier, in a variety of geographical spaces from Japan to Palestine to Iraq. Gendered perspectives are also intimately tied to analyses of ‘power’: how power is enacted by the occupier; how powerlessness is experienced by the occupied; how power is negotiated, shared, compromised, subverted, reclaimed; power as visible and invisible; institutional power; contested power in post-conflict societies; and power as discursively constructed. The term ‘military occupation’ is interpreted broadly to include occupation, interventions, the presence of military bases and peacekeeping/post-conflict operations. This interpretation allows space to demonstrate that the lines between each definition are blurred, especially when it comes to analysing gender and power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ritual complexes of the Ehing, a farming people of southern Senegal, embody an elaborate set of prohibitions on social behavior and prescribe the general rules of Ehing social organization. Power is distributed and maintained in Ehing culture by the concept of Odieng ("hatchet"), which as a spirit acts upon human beings much as an ax does upon a tree, falling from above to punish its victims for transgression. Marc Schloss's ethnography of the Ehing is a study of the meaning of Odieng's power, explaining why its rules are so essential to the Ehing way of life.

Book excerpt: “He asked if I was all settled in; although he meant settled into my accommodations, I took it to also mean settled in to meditate—ready to settle the mind into concentration. Always look for the double meaning.” As a young adult, Quinn McDonald sought to understand the nature of truth: is there a singular universal truth, or does truth vary from person to person? Unsatisfied with the lack of answers in her hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, she ventured to Thailand to seek enlightenment as a Buddhist nun. Over the next thirteen years, she would receive teachings from the most prolific leaders in Buddhism and journey across the world on her path to near awakening. As she studies and meditates, she must overcome obstacles both mental and physical: from splitting with her partner when they ordain at separate monasteries to having an infection cut out of her with no anaesthetic, Quinn’s path to the truth is a long and arduous one. But through the friends she makes and the teachers she connects with, she learns to decipher the teachings of the Buddha and apply them to her life, bringing her closer to understanding the nature of the world.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Tides of Honour and Promises to Keep comes a poignant novel about a young couple caught on opposite sides of the Second World War. In the fall of 1939, Grace Baker’s three brothers, sharp and proud in their uniforms, board Canadian ships headed for a faraway war. Grace stays behind, tending to the homefront and the general store that helps keep her small Nova Scotian community running. The war, everyone says, will be over before it starts. But three years later, the fighting rages on and rumours swirl about “wolf packs” of German U-Boats lurking in the deep waters along the shores of East Jeddore, a stone’s throw from Grace’s window. As the harsh realities of war come closer to home, Grace buries herself in her work at the store. Then, one day, a handsome stranger ventures into the store. He claims to be a trapper come from away, and as Grace gets to know him, she becomes enamoured by his gentle smile and thoughtful ways. But after several weeks, she discovers that Rudi, her mysterious visitor, is not the lonely outsider he appears to be. He is someone else entirely—someone not to be trusted. When a shocking truth about her family forces Grace to question everything she has so strongly believed, she realizes that she and Rudi have more in common than she had thought. And if Grace is to have a chance at love, she must not only choose a side, but take a stand. Come from Away is a mesmerizing story of love, shifting allegiances, and second chances, set against the tumultuous years of the Second World War.
