Download or read book Hark! A Vagrant written by Kate Beaton and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Kate Beaton appeared on the comics scene in 2007 her cartoons have become fan favourites and gathered an enormous following, appearing in the New Yorker, Harper and the LA Times, to name but a few. Her website, Hark! A Vagrant, receives an average of 1.2 million hits a month, 500 thousand of them unique. Why? Because she's not just making silly jokes. She's making jokes about everything we learned in school, and more. Praised for their expression, intelligence and comic timing, her cartoons are best known for their wonderfully light touch on historical and literary topics. The jokes are a knowing look at history through a very modern perspective, written for every reader, and are a crusade against anyone with the idea that history is boring. It's pretty hard to argue with that when you're laughing your head off at a comic about Thucydides. They also cover whatever's on her mind that week - be it the perils of city living or the pop-cultural infiltration of Sex and the City, featuring an array of characters, from a mischievous pony, to reinvented superheroes, to a surly teen duo who could be the anti-Hardy-Boys. Perceptive, sharp and wonderfully irreverent, Hark! A Vagrant is as informative as it is hilarious, and a comic collection to treasure.

Download or read book Like a Dog written by Zak Sally and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best of Sally's acclaimed short stories from the past 15 years, including the complete first two issues of Recidivist, navigating the messy and murky waters of human experience with unflinching veracity. One man’s heartfelt and irreverent record of his time on this rock, Zak Sally’s unflinchingly veracious book, Like a Dog, is both direct and oblique, which we find rather miraculous considering the messy and murky waters of human experience it manages to navigate. Like a Dog is among the few comic book testimonials burdened by the yen to understand and articulate the mundane and the magnificent. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself laughing and crying as you claw your way through each hard fought page! p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.9px Arial; color: #424242}

Download or read book Comics and Stuff written by Henry Jenkins and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers how comics display our everyday stuff—junk drawers, bookshelves, attics—as a way into understanding how we represent ourselves now For most of their history, comics were widely understood as disposable—you read them and discarded them, and the pulp paper they were printed on decomposed over time. Today, comic books have been rebranded as graphic novels—clothbound high-gloss volumes that can be purchased in bookstores, checked out of libraries, and displayed proudly on bookshelves. They are reviewed by serious critics and studied in university classrooms. A medium once considered trash has been transformed into a respectable, if not elite, genre. While the American comics of the past were about hyperbolic battles between good and evil, most of today’s graphic novels focus on everyday personal experiences. Contemporary culture is awash with stuff. They give vivid expression to a culture preoccupied with the processes of circulation and appraisal, accumulation and possession. By design, comics encourage the reader to scan the landscape, to pay attention to the physical objects that fill our lives and constitute our familiar surroundings. Because comics take place in a completely fabricated world, everything is there intentionally. Comics are stuff; comics tell stories about stuff; and they display stuff. When we use the phrase “and stuff” in everyday speech, we often mean something vague, something like “etcetera.” In this book, stuff refers not only to physical objects, but also to the emotions, sentimental attachments, and nostalgic longings that we express—or hold at bay—through our relationships with stuff. In Comics and Stuff, his first solo authored book in over a decade, pioneering media scholar Henry Jenkins moves through anthropology, material culture, literary criticism, and art history to resituate comics in the cultural landscape. Through over one hundred full-color illustrations, using close readings of contemporary graphic novels, Jenkins explores how comics depict stuff and exposes the central role that stuff plays in how we curate our identities, sustain memory, and make meaning. Comics and Stuff presents an innovative new way of thinking about comics and graphic novels that will change how we think about our stuff and ourselves.
Download or read book Spaniel Rage written by Vanessa Davis and published by Drawn and Quarterly. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I love [Davis’s] free-form drawing . . . She just has a funny, truthful voice.” —Audrey Niffenegger Vanessa Davis’s autobiography, more observational than confessional, delighted readers ten years ago when she first began telling stories about her life in New York as a young single Jewish woman. Spaniel Rage is filled with frank and immediate pencil-drawn accounts of dating woes, misunderstandings between her and her mother, and conversations with friends. Her keen observation of careless words spoken casually is refreshingly honest, yet never condemning. Unabashedly, Davis offers up gently self-deprecating anecdotes about her anxieties and wry truths about the contradictions of life in the big city. These comics are sexy, funny, lonely, beautiful, spare, and very smart—the finest work from a natural storyteller. “[Davis creates] structurally sound, stylistically individual images that also manage to seem totally casual and spur-of-the-moment. The cliché “she makes it look so easy” is acutely appropriate for Vanessa and her work.”—Rookie “The frank, personal specificity of [Spaniel Rage] keeps you gripped.”—Vulture, 8 Comics You Need To Read “...a warm, familiar voice ... Spaniel Rage holds an amazing freshness 12 years after it was published. It certainly deserves Drawn & Quarterly’s February reissue.”—Paste “[Spaniel Rage collects] snapshots of her life that feel both utterly familiar and totally weird ... a pleasant delve into young life in the city.”—Library Journal “Often funny, often tinged with loss, Davis chronicles a life page by page [and] touches on the anxieties of the internet age.”—The Comics Journal “This work [has] the strange power of making me feel like Davis broke into my apartment and scribbled her life into my personal notebook, just for me.”—Broken Pencil “An honest, unflinching set of loose cartoons... at its core, the commonalities of the cartoons in Spaniel Rage reflect the quirks of daily life itself.”—Bookriot, 5 Graphic Novels To Watch In For February “If you dig slice-of-life graphic novels, then you’ll want to pick up Spaniel Rage from Vanessa Davis ... the graphic-novel equivalent of a Seinfeld episode about twentysomethings.”—London Free Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stand-up comic Dave Feener has a great rapport with his audience, so when his body is found maliciously stabbed a short distance away from The Laff Attak where he’s just performed, there seems to be no real motive for the brutal murder. A serial killer who does not think local comics are funny has just begun his rampage. Constables Mike Borneo and Lissa Cassway along with detective Vince Vetters are racing to find the killer before he claims another victim. Was Feener just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Left with his wedding ring and his wallet, Feener’s body isn’t even cold when the killer strikes again—this time stabbing Phil Vetters, a comic known for his redneck shtick and the brother of detective Vince Vetters. Just as Vince vows revenge, the killer makes a fateful mistake when he stabs another comic and does not ensure his victim is dead before he leaves the crime scene. The killer is a sicko, but not an idiot. He’s right under everyone’s noses and the anticipation of a righteous kill is all just part of the fun. Only time will tell if the killer will have the last laugh.
